Nice video! I experienced the same thing once in my TH40 with the Critical Defense round. No other brands or types ever even come close to hanging up. I see someone has already commented on what I think the problem is, the elastomer tip sticks out just enough to grip the ramp. You can also hear the difference in chambering even when they don't FTF, it's a muted sound as the elastomer hits the feed ramps.
I've always used Hornady Critical Defense when carry 1 of my 40's. bIt's a very consistent performer. It hits very hard, expands very well and penetrates deeply. The recoil is also very managable. What more could you want in a 40
@@lasvegastransparencycopwat6705critical duty is shit unless your a cop or a gang member then it’s probably the best, acrually critical duty staggered with liberty civil defense to shoot through vests would be best for a gang member lol
I’ve had a few failure to feed malfunctions with the Critical Defense ammo, but not the Critical Duty. The elastomer tip gets hung up on the feed ramp. That bullet shape sure looks like it would feed well. Great video sir.
Good video. I spent a mag of .40 critical defense my buddy Rob gave me, as I thought it was some Mickey Mouse novelty round. I reckon after watching your video, it’s a solid defense round. I am, however, a MAJOR user and fan of Underwood👍🏼
Watch out for set back on Critical Duty ammo. I have experience with more than one type of 9mm Hornady ammo. I will never carry it again due to so many rounds having setback after only being chambered a few times.
That FTF is kinda nuts, but not unheard of. I got a Glock 20 gen 4 not too long ago, and despite Glock's reputation, it actually had several FTFs when I took it to the range, both with American Eagle 10mm and with my good, full power 10mm. Ironically, the cheap Tisas 1911 I also took to the range for the first time that day didn't have a single failure. My other Glock (G21 gen 3) hasn't had any problems.
I have a glock 35 that will sometimes fail to chamber the first round out of a magazine if you release the slide via depressing the slide stop. This gun has done that intermittently since it was new. A few years ago I began pulling the slide back to release the stop and its never failed since. I now pull the slide back on all of my guns to chamber a round
Some guns don't like the plastic tip in the Hornady bullets.. had a 1911 that wouldn't even chamber critical duty once lol and my lever action doesn't always want to eject unfired rounds unless you lift on the extractor a tiny bit because there a little longer than most other 45-70 loads
Hornady would have a perfect bullet If they would run the rubber tip even with the bullet tip.. that rubber they leave hanging out the end causes feeding issues in alot of pistols... To this day the critical defense is the only round that's every failed in my Glock 17.. and I'm talking dump truck loads of ammo run through that think. Crappy reloads , all kinda shit .. granted it's only been once and I shoot critical defense all the time, it's still once. And my carry gun don't like the chamber them either.. it's an xd-s mod 2... It runs them fine, but sometimes when I chamber the first round , that damn rubber tip hangs on the feed ramp.
@@828enigma6 Oh, I have some 125 gr ft Scott and they are hot suckers over 1300, thats the thing about 40 the weight can go from 200 gr down to 60 gr..lol.
You know I've tried to love speargoldot I just don't see the benefit it's such a smooth bullet and shooting through barriers they don't expand the same if I had to stick with a lead hollow point it would be the federal HST I would love to see you do some gel tests of 40 s&w and compare them to other hollow points do like a best of video. I carry the extreme defender 68 gr in my p365. Lead is too soft for a lot of barriers that I've tested.
I had a couple of FTF with this same ammo in my G23. After shooting these rounds and Civil Defense 60 gr I’m all in with CD ammo. Takes about 2oz of weight off my carry gun. Produces 500+ fpe and no issues to to feed or eject.
@@HoodziHockey16Negative ghost rider. Do your own tests before you make judgement. Vehicle bodies and glass are no match for Civil Defence warp speed.
Hmm, I'm a little surprised that you call a Xd-40 a "short barrel" pistol...most testers have a limit of 3" for revolvers and 3.4-3.6" for semi autos. Suggest you read your chronograph instructions before shooting another video...that "Delete Shot" button is there for a reason. Your "FTF" issue with the Critical Defense was most likely due to limp wristing/riding the slide...some mgfs (eg, Kahr) stipulate that the user must use the slide release to reliably chamber a round. Dropping the slide with the mag release is more consistent than manually racking/releasing the slide. Detailed accuracy testing on any semi-auto pistol often shows better 1st round accuracy with a slide release chambered 1st round..but that's another subject.
underwood doesn't even have this load right now, they do have a 150gr that advertised at 1300fps and that's the closest to this load they have in stock
Yes, I've tested that one too. They are high energy, but expand too much and stop a little short. Not much, but like right around 12" or even a bit less. The Underwood 155 gr XTPs are greatest, easily penetrating 16" to 17" in gel and passing the heavy denim test. Get a couple boxes if you can. Those are crazy hot loaded too, I get really close to 550 ft-lbs of energy with my 4" barrel, I bet Gun Sam gets closer to 575 or 600 with his 5" barrel, but I haven't seen him test them if he has.
Good test...both performed great! Love 40cal!
40 is the correct answer vs human sized questions
Yup!!!
Good performance out of both of these projectiles, wouldn't be worried about carrying either one. Thanks for the vid.
Good stuff, thanks for another fine round of 40 Friday testing.
Those 40s sure make impressive holes.

Critical duty is what the F.B.I uses. Not the critical defense.JS
Using water jugs, multiply inches of water by 2/3. That will give you inches of penetration in real , nonsynthetic, ballistic gel.
