My bet is that the game was made as a contract obligation: the rights holder had a contract saying they need to make a King Kong game every 5 years or whatever, so they found a company in Thailand that could make a game for 500k and released it. Doesn't matter whether or not it's good, just that it exists.

Doesn't that beg the question of HOW a company like this happens to have the rights to the King Kong IP? Blizzard outsourcing Warcraft reforged to a random under the floorboards dev in Taiwan is one thing, but KING KONG looking this bad is astonishing.

I could make that for 25k... I was going to suggest it might just be two college grads making games for shits n giggles... the price is the real problem. If it was being sold as a $10 indie game people wouldn't be so upset. /shrug

Because King Kong is in a… very weird position as a copyrighted property.
This isn’t even based on any other interpretation of King Kong, like the Monsterverse version with Godzilla, Peter Jackson, etc.

For anyone that doesn't know here is the reason something like this can be made:
The copyright of the King Kong novel had expired without renewel making King Kong a public domain story. The films however are still protected and currently owned by Warner media.
I believe this issue was revealed when the company in charge of King Kong tried to Sue Nintendo for the name Kong.

AI would do better than this.
      .
Where AI would probably fall short would be making meaningful storylines and building emotional attachment to characters. But even then, it's just a matter of time before AI could simulate that accurately too.
      .
People like to think humans are super complex and unique... most humans are not either of those things. AI has surpassed humans in a multitude of fields while only existing for less than 20 years... give it a few more years and there's nothing humans will be able to do more efficiently than AI. Anyone who denies that as fact, is clearly making an emotional argument, not a logical one.

Graphics engineer here. They use a strange toon shader, similar to that used in Borderlands and other games, where you see a black outline around everything, but they've made it more subtle and almost unnoticeable, so it just makes the game look cheap and old instead of giving it a stylistic look like a toon shader is supposed to do. But I think what gave people the impression of bad graphics were the low res textures, ugly color scheme, and horrific animations (and some of the modelling too). They also seemed to have used very high poly models and depend on some kind of LOD system, which is clearly turned up all the way, that's why things look like they are constantly blinking between lower detail versions of themselves. This is indicative of using unedited 3D assets which are often way too high poly for realtime graphics. The older kong game was actually lower poly, it just looked better because it had better textures, better color scheme, and way better animations (and the gameplay looked better too but I'm only talking about appearance).

Gollum was made by a well known german studio Daedalic (mainly for Point&Click adventures) and we got many insights what happened.
It killed the company. Daedelic does not exist anymore. Which is tragic, because this is the first true miss from them and the devs are not incompetent.
Gollum was the result of bad management. It had only 15 million Euro budget which is a joke for that license.

Unless they messed up massively by buying the license for 10+ mi plus marketing, and mismanaged the costs of developing, hoping to hit big when it released as it is LOTR, I can see that, but even then... not even 1mi should be enough to make anything better than what they have, even if they made it as a point and click adventure, it would make way more sense for a gollum game imo. If I had any skills and the gall to try and make a game myself I’d honestly want me or someone to just go to unreal engine and make a goddamn Godzilla game that’s actually fun. It can’t possibly be harder or worse than what we’ve had so far.

It's a survival Horror story driven game with amazing gameplay, I played the shit outta it as a kid even though I was scared shitless of the Dinosaur survival sections. The King Kong sections were mid but infrequent so it doesn't matter.

People forgetting that in the time that they watched this video 20 more games worse than this were released on console digital stores and steam. The only reason this and Gollum are "worst game of 2023" is because they have established licenses attached to them so they get more attention and someone bothers to review them. The worst games aren't the worst reviewed games, the worst games are the ones that aren't even worth reviewing.

And funnily enough, those who were succesful are mostly coming from comics, manga and other already gaming adjacent forms of media, with Star Wars as the prime example
