Japanese-inspired charred wood tiny home in Ohio small town

  • When Alex Melamed and his wife moved to the traditional brick and mortar town of Yellow Springs, Ohio they built a home only as big as they needed at the time. Melamed is a builder and could keep costs low while still incorporating high design elements like "shou-sugi-ban" (charred wood) siding.
The tiny square house was affordable to build and to run. It meets Passive House standards relying on “primo” insulation, passive solar, and a heat pump when necessary. “Our electric bill was $36 last month,” explains Melamed.

Small dwelling = little tax for city. I saw a a tiny house in Hawaii where the tiny house builder started with the "garage" and never built the rest of the "house". The garage became his tiny home with a view!

So awesome. They built and live in a tiny house while they are young and studying. They saved money and now are ready to expand their living space and family. If that isn't the most responsible way to go about starting a life, I don't know what is. Hats off to these folks. Plus yellow springs is super cool.

Nice space. This tiny house still seems roomy inside. The IKEA kitchen gives it a touch of elegance, and the living space remains open and light. Simple quality furnishings. The very high ceiling makes a difference to the feel. It would be ideal for one person. Well planned for light, good job.

HIgher ceiling translates to more air space to keep warm in the winter. I do wonder about the R rating for this home.

My heart sank when he mentioned the big house that he is currently building. Made me feel like the tiny house was just an experiment, something to talk about at dinner parties. The tiny house stories are much more interesting when its people who (like me) cannot afford a regular sized house and/or genuinely believe that living in a tiny house is the way forward.

I really liked how they built this little home. PERFECTION. I did not care shou- sugi-ban siding. I am not sure if it was the choice of siding, the way it was done or just my taste. I have seen it done with higher end cedar and it looked stunning. No matter what he has done a wonderful job.

Kirsten Dirksen, I like how your blog shows videos of unique tiny homes and not the same old trailer homes with the bed loft. Those are getting boring and I think they will get old to live in over time. As we age, our needs change, so not everyone can climb a ladder or tiny steps without a hand rail. I definitely prefer the small homes that are 300-500 sq. ft.

That tiny house is amazingly roomy looking. And that kitchen area looks really great.....not "tiny" looking at all. I realize that the tiny house was built right up into the trees, but I kept thinking to myself that a rooftop deck area would have been (even more) perfect......I am, however, questioning how it feels with two people in the space on a continuous basis....nice video overall.

I think the fact that it worked out for them with the city is great. One of the things with the tiny house movement isn't if you live there forever, but that you have a choice in the matter. Several of the Cities need to update there zoning to reflect today's needs. I do think things should have at least a moniker of Aesthetics. That can be accomplished despite the size of the house. Thank you again Kristen for your video.

First of all, nothing Japanese about this. However, to be fair, he did great job with the kitchen and the loft bed. Usually the counter space of a tiny house is only fit for cook top and sink, yet you got dedicated that corner into a kitchen.
The loft bed upstairs is not claustrophobic at all, with the windows placement, surely make a spacious illusion.
Additionally, I think cinderella toilet, or composite toilet will be a better choice.
Oh yeah, is the roof already have solar panels installed, for free energy?
Last but not least, I think every tiny house need tiny rain harvesting and filtering system their house.
Off the grid, off the bills.

Seems like a nice place. We've got a 20'x20' metal shed that was $3k installed. Not so good as a living space (no windows or insulation), but about the same size. When you're not narrow like the trailer option there's a lot more space in a small place. Although you lose a lot of wall space going square-ish.

I love to see a person take pride in there own work. And this person owns up in building this tiny house? Unbelievable. Just my own thoughts here. So U have to jump over bushes just to get to the front door and say this my garden. Then pan the rest of the yard, And I see four (if not more)stumps from the trees you took out. u didn't even mention if you recycle them in building your tiny house. Lets not to forget after panning inside to the loft area no complaints here. I think all and all you did a great job on your own. A lot of thought great decision making inside your home. Good luck on the next home.

I can't say I find the exterior of the house ascetically pleasing, but I thought the inside looked very cozy. Of course, to each their own, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, etc... I'm not a fan of plywood, personally. I like tile and hardwood a lot more, but again that's a personal preference. And that was a good point about a small fireplace in a tiny house. It wouldn't take much to heat it.

In the code here it says there has t be 150 feet of floor space for the first occupant and 100 feet for every additional occupant don't necessarily find it super unreasonable although I do think it is unnecessary to limit what people can build on their own property.

I've been thinking about tiny houses in general.. I suspect most permanent TH dwellers will not be happy long-term with less than 200-250 sq. ft. for each occupant, which could include common areas. Most people, even family members, need a quiet spot to be alone. Also I would certainly recommend stand-up bedroom ceilings.

This "legal" tiny house would not be legal where I live. I live not quite an hour away and our building code is still at 1000 sq ft. So, don't think Ohio is place to build tiny (just yet). We still have to open the minds of our local government. Yellow Springs has always been a pretty laid back place. With lot of great people and I am sure it must be a great place to live too. Nice to know there is places in Ohio that can Think Tiny.

Old comment, but you are correct about one thing; there are plenty of people in Ohio that "think tiny." Small minded might be a better term. Seriously though, 1000 sq. ft. is about right. You still get the benefits of a tiny house (small footprint, energy efficient, etc.), but you don't have the aggravation that comes with too small a space.

I don't mind saving space but I can't unfortunately live in cramped spaces because of my height (I'm not that tall, 5'10") but it be a little tight squeeze/fit. Really, nice home!

I'm 24 and I know a lot of people my age that want a large house, expensive car, and nice clothes and they want it all right now and are willing to take up large sums of debt in order to get it. I'm considering living in a tiny house like the one in the video considering that I'm 24 and I don't need any of those things. What I need to do is practice a skill set and get good at it first, then consider moving into a larger house when I get married and have kids later on in my life.

I would consider adding a small mud room enclosure at the entryway just so you better can retain heat inside during winter, just a thought.

can you elaborate a little more on the alcohol burning fireplace. it looks like something that anyone with a little metal working skills could make. a one piece back plate with the trough built in, and a plane of pyrex or some other fireproof glass to protect the flame.
