Builds open-plan home by hand with Japanese-inspired carpentry

  • Tim Seggerman bought a rundown shack in rural New Jersey to build a house out of simple materials with his own labor. “After clearing away the unhappy rotted house, I set out to build (essentially by one carpenter, me) a simple modernist cabin for c. $125 a square foot using Cypress, Douglas Fir and Common White Pine available at the local yard.”
It took him 7 years to build and Seggerman estimates the materials cost him around $100,000, but the home is spacious and light with views that soar into the surrounding forest. It’s mostly cypress that Seggerman purchased from Tinsman Lumber in Lumberville, Pa., “a family-owned yard dating (continually in the family!) back to 1785 in the same spot, all the many yard woodsheds still clad in the original 240-year-old cypress."
He didn’t treat the wood because he wanted the house to be indistinguishable from the surrounding woods. And as the woods change with the seasons from green to red and orange to brown, the house reflects these colors off the wood. Seggerman’s niece lives in the home and says she can watch the woods for hours.

The guy is super humble. To build that entire home by himself, including the furniture, and making it seem like anyone can do it. Pretty incredible. And the setting is really spectacular. Great use of windows to take all that nature in. I was surprised he went with a flat roof though, seeing that he does get snow which would then be hard on the wood. But I really loved the rustic simplicity of the home.

How satisfying to see. My father sold the house he designed for my mother and we moved into the stable for my father's horse. The house was peggy cypress planks inside and out. Most of them had been pulled from the bottom of the surrounding waterways and aged to perfection. Each room had a dutch style door leading outside. My father's dream of having multiple horses changed into design of space to accommodate a family. My dad would have been blown away by this gentleman's vision and imagination. Thank you Kirsten for providing us with such thoughtful and inspirational content. ❤

There is just something so special about it, and it's owner. I would love to see you come back there when and if the basement gets finished. Lovely.
To live in a structure of wood, built from vision, craftsmanship, depth of soul and creativity, emersed in pristine woods to experience, reflect and ponder the essence of trees, while watching the spectrum of light dancing through your days and the moonlit nights.........
I too live in a home built of wood, of Cedar and Pine, a chalet/cabin designed and built by my parents in the early 1960's, in a pristine forrest of Pine and Cedar in the Sierra Nevada. Homes created from dreams, labor and heart are truly a gift to many generations to follow....... Ode to those who create habitats to enjoy, sharing such beauty, environments to simply be, to thrive and to live so well.
    Wonderful.

Lucky guy. This is an amazing home. So spacious, airy and filled with light. The simplicity of the wooden interior also adds to the sense of space. The large windows facing the trees give you the sense of living in a forest with the trees, and not separately from them. In this day and age of unaffordable housing, I would give up a piece of my anatomy to have a house like this. But good luck with that unless one is wealthy.
