I agree, I love props and I think they drastically help out show design and theming and GE, but I appreciate santa clara like you said forcing the music and visuals to be the headliner of their show
SCV's show is simply meritless and without a specific through-line. The first five minutes are filled with choreographic scatter-trash, and with no fewer than 12 "trust lifts" without momentum or meaning. Repetitive and without thematic depth. The wheels are going to fall off this show next week.
@@joedollard4921 Your son was paid $23,500 to design the show?! That's what I'm criticising-- the design. You do know the difference between design criticism and performance criticism, right? You understand that this show doesn't meet basic design criteria for professional shows? Right? Subject. Theme. Cohesion, Universality, Emotional Scripting, Uniqueness and Authenticity?
@@jesuspectre9883 Yes, I see your point. Kind of like the difference between responding to somebody’s question in a comment or ignoring the question and randomly going off and trashing the entire show. Yes, I see your point.
Great analogy to explain the achievement and execution of content using grade 3 vs 4 pieces. Those columns make way more sense now! The bandscores dashboard is going to be great once regionals start coming in.
I think your predictions for the top 6 are spot on. The scores from Mason showed the Bluecoats in the mix with Crown and BAC but, having been there, there was a clear break between Bluecoats and the other 2. The point spread should have been higher. It will be the 2 blues going head to head all season and Crown and BAC battling from 3 & 4. I feel BAC will pull it out over Crown going with what the shows are now.
@@ZakhadWOW Correct..but based on Crown's design style and the past year or two, it will be fast marching and music with a lot of notes to juice the brass score...and the crown, of course. But does the show have enough ceiling to propel them to 3rd? maybe...it really depends on how Boston maxes out their show. Glitch could grow into a beast or it could go to complete cheese. We shall see. Barring some kind of design over haul, I just don't see either of them battling for 1 or 2. I could be wrong.
America's high temperatures may have a significant impact on future corps performance. Some areas are seeing some very dangerous temperatures, so I know many corps are dealing with some very difficult challenges. Performing in such climate can have a game changing impact, and possibly be physically overpowering. Corps management have their hands full, certainly with their planned programs, but moreso given today's changing climate (for the worst).
I am with you 1-7 I haven't seen enough of the other corps to have an opinion on them yet. Your take on the Mandarins is spot on, lots of demand in that show. If PR was a little older I would have them in 4th. 5-7 is going to be a lot of back and forth once SCV and the Mandarins get over the Rockies. There are a lot of notes in that BD show and their percussions is probably a little better than the Bluecoats. My way too early opinion is that the Coats will probably win with a margin of 1/10th or less.
In order for Bluecoats to win, they must integrate one of the video concepts from Son Lux's video "Change is Everything." All the layers of depth are in that video, and if Bluecoats include just one visual reference to the video, they (by the transitive property) add layers of meaning to their show which is currently empty and vacuuous.
Also, as you go through the summer, Vanguard is often going on very early in the night. Their scores are going to be skewed lower to leave room for the other corps. I definitely think they are going to take Phantom if not Boston as well once they get into competitive rankings and proper placing.
especially all-age i have a feeling it will experience explosive growth over the next decade after merging with DCI, since world class is requiring more and more adult money, but the people with the adult money are rapidly aging out
Having seen SCV live, I think you're sleeping on SCV. You're take on mandarins is accurate. I think crown show is good technically... but to me not as entertaining. 4-6 I'd go SCV, phantom and crown
Is that what the money is for!? Got it!✨😊✨ I’m rating and ranking the same as you but with one difference. I’m not looking for derived achievement. What’s in front of me, is what’s in front of me. That being said, I would switch Boston for Crown. At this point of the season, The Crown Guard is pretty clean and I… at this point… I haven’t seen anyone taking high brass from them. But I have yet to see anything of the Blue Devils! Im quite sure they will slap me upside the head when I do get to see them. I’m going to try to sell some coke bottles (old timer’s reference,) and try to see the Mesquite, Texas show. I’ve really enjoyed watching you and I HIT THAT SUBSCRIBE BUTTON so I can see you all season and help you get to that 500 mark! Thanks for the entertainment!
Troopers over Cavies? Troopers are doing the same trick they did in 2022, in that the full horn line doesn't play a melody until the final minute of the show. Otherwise its unison long tones and blats. Melody is given to soloists throughout most of the show and I think this is cheating. But good lob on the Spirit call. I thought the exact same thing you did!
I love the way you do the show, it’s great and im excited to see you’re going to do this every week. I agree with you on the 1-7 for sure. Crown and Boston I am still really unsure on. For 12th, I don’t really know, it’s really hard to tell. Right now I have the scouts but that could change super easily.
As an exercise, Dan, why don't you briefly detail the concept in each show? Just a brief description of what happens in the show, and what visual elements they're using and what meaning is there. This proves that you understand the intended subject and theme, vital to the score. For example, Phantom Regiment. What is their show concept? What is the subject and theme, and how does it tie in? (Hint: There isn't one.)
I know there are quite a number of controversies, but one of the most impactful for me (who has had a daughter heavily involved in marching band and DCI) is that many of the programs have become far too "modern" and "flashy", taking away from fantastic classic sounds and formations. All of the wild stuff on the field today just looks ugly and not that enjoyable.
Without evolution of an art form, we'd all still be drawing on cave walls or dancing in circles around a bonfire. If DCI stuck with your "classic sounds and formations", the audience would decline from old age and boredom. The evolution or modernization has kept the art form vibrant and interesting to bring in newer fans.
I think your show is a lot of fun. To make it more fun, it needs to be shorter. You seem to start apologizing for it newr the end; please stop that as I understand the concept. Too much of a word salad toward the end.
I wasn`t sure about your channel the first time i watched last week. Thought you might have been another die hard Bue Devil supporter pretending to be objective. I like how you are open to modifying your rankings. My kids corp is going to shock you by San Antonio..
As a 20+ year Crown fan, I gotta say that this show is making me yawn (at this moment). Every corps this year has something that pops. Crown has amazing musicians, and they have really improved their visual, but I don’t understand what they are selling. What is a promethean? Is this show abt fire? I hope there’s a lot more GE and design coming.
There's gotta be more to the closer. It just sort of...ends. I've seen this a couple of times before with them and I wonder if it hurts them in the long run. I think they concentrate on cleaning what they have and then adding on as they go. But other corps seem to be able to put a full show out on day one... And if there isn't some kind of fire effect coming out of that "mountain" by the end, then they deserve not to medal.
@@davidtavener1742 i bet they already have the closer ready, but they want its reveal to be huge, they want the performance of the best moments to be revealed only when theyre ready how great of a reveal would it be to pull out something crazy mid-July, versus everyone seeing those moments badly recorded on a cellphone during their very dirty crown-live performance im 99% sure crown is going to try something huge in the closer, although i am less confident in it really having the same effect as the moments in the early 2010s; beating moments like the 2011 closer or 2015 crown reveal will be very difficult
I love love love Phantom's music & closer. However...they need more talented & experienced players. Musically they suffer bc of this. Visually, they have great moments...especially the closer which is classic phantom. However, at points in the show, they "trap" themselves in the prop cages which mean...bark & park...and limits their drill potential. More players climbing props & entering props means less marching potential. If you park & bark, you better sound great, & I think Phantom doesn't sound great. I see a 6th to 8th place finish at best.
In rankings? Maybe, who knows. But in terms of show quality? Nah, Bluecoats fans are eating a full 7 course meal with extra cheese on top. Regardless of rankings, it's still gonna be an amazing season. Are we going to see another 2019? Maybe. But could we see our reigning 2nd place corp get their second win? Also maybe. It's going to be an amazing season and I can't wait for it.
@@thelastthingyoudexpect1294 Well said. I appreciate those that don't backlash or spew out vulgar. Your Bluecoats might have the better entertaining show thus far this year but it would all end up in Indy. Who gets the Gold? Much respect.
