Let's not forget the most laughable scene in the entire movie:
Book: "Harry, did you put your name in the Goblet of Fire?" Dumbledore asked calmly.

I have to agree with you. Before I read all seven books my senior year of high school, Goblet Of Fire was probably my favorite HP film. That changed drastically after I read the book and noticed how clunky the film really was and exactly how much depth and plot it left out. Kinda weird to say, but I honestly thought the second film was the best, though I'm sure I'm the one percent on that. I did appreciate your input though and watching your book vs film videos on this one as well. Good job.

I totally agree. One thing I'd like to add is that this film manages to somehow drag horrifically while simultaneously rushing everything. Thoroughly enjoyed your commentary on this one, I was dying with laughter! 😂😂😂 I really hated this movie, such a shame because this was my favourite book (except for S.P.E.W.).
One thing I'll add about the colours of the spells during the graveyard duel, Expelliarmus is red like Gryffindor and Avada Kedavra is green like Slytherin. Additionally, as was stated in the books, Harry's eyes are green whilst Voldemort's are red. So its interesting that the colours the spells give off, are the opposites of the casters' eye colours.

I really HATED the stupid introductions they gave the Hungarians and the French ladies. I nearly wanted to vomit in the movie theater, all that teenage angst bullshit ruined this movie and Order of the Phoenix for me. I definitely did vomit during the horrible concert during the Yule Ball. I even remember the film strip of the projector burned and we had to leave the theater and be relocated to another one. We were also given the choice of a refund... I would have accepted the refund, but hardly anyone listens to a 13-year-old who went to see the film with his easily impressionable family.

What all boils down to the biggest issue with the 4th installment is it's *SCRIPT*:
When a studio hires a director who's not familiar with the books' source material, a lot of integral contents of the main story is going to be left out, it's great to make changes going from Childlike Wonder to Dark Fantasy, but the pacing from its writing does come off as uneventful and rushed, plus the characters become way too mean spirited.
The only two good things that ever come out of this cluttered mess is Cedric's Death and Voldemort's Return, setting a much grittier tone for the rest of the franchise.
As a Story Overall, we are better off reading the novel to gain more visual perspective. 😑👎👎

This is actually the last Harry Potter movie I liked. It struck a perfect chord between being dark and dramatic while also having a sense of fun and lightheartedness. Even though some of the humour was silly and unnecessary, I personally liked it since it made Hogwarts feel like a real high school and really captured well the feeling of carefree fun that people feel while at high school. I also liked the visuals of this film; it felt very immersive with the dark gothic style the third film had but without feeling monotonous and flat like the Yates films. I'd say this is my fourth favourite HP film, behind the first three but way ahead of the next four.

A very interesting review, I must say! Whilst this is probably my favourite of the Harry Potter movies (it's up there at least), I find it very difficult to disagree with the vast majority of points raised here. Perhaps it's because I try to view the books and the movies as entirely seperate entities in order to avoid disappointment when things are different between the two, however there's not a lot I can fault you on here! I'll be rewatching the films later next month as I'm going to visit the studio tour in Watford, I'll see if your reviews wind up changing my perspective at all :D

The books are obviously a thousand times better, and the biggest problem with Goblet of Fire is they didn't split this one into two films. Deathly Hallows was a cash grab prt1 and prt 2 with no real need to separate it as most of the book is camping.
The details you say it missed would have worked with a prt1 prt2. Part1 Quidditch World Cup, Task 1, Part 2 Tasks 2 and 3. It's a shallow film 6/10, but I think film 5 and 6 are considerably worst!

how does the parseltongue bit confuse you? The reason we hear the snake speak english in the 1st film is because we're hearing what harry was hearing. he didn't realize he was speaking another language and he simply understood what the snake was saying and thought he was speaking english with it. in goblet of fire we don't hear the snake speak in english because we are hearing the old man's point of view and he's a muggle who doesn't speak the language, so he just hears hissing noises

I have to say I love that Harry wakes up from his bad dream at the Burrow instead of the Dursleys in the movie, though the unfortunate thing is that it leaves out the bit of Dudley’s large tongue. So if they had been in the movie, I would have it be the morning with the Dursleys and then the receiving of the letter to the Quidditch World Cup, the Weasley men picking Harry up, Dudley’s large tongue, bed before the Quidditch World Cup and then Frank Bryce’s murder and Harry waking up at the Burrow.
I also wish it was like this in the book.

The snake in the first one started talking and it was showing from the point of view from Harry, in the other movies it is showing what other people are hearing and seeing with regards to the snake.

That duel is Priori Incantartem, where two wands with a core from the same source (i.e. feather from the same phoenix) will not be used to attack each other and instead shows the spell history of the wands. In the book it is shown after the Quiddich match when they investigate which wand cast the dark mark, funnily enough Barty Crouch Jr stole Harry's wand during the match and used it before dropping it.
Something I hate about the movies is they keep doing this when they want to show "duels", the movies think it's the equivalent of sabers clashing but it isn't. I wanted the duels to be like people shooting each other with fireworks etc.
For this scene it was well rendered. The reason the colours are red and green are because Harry uses Expelliarmus and Voldemort uses Avada Kedavra, and these spells' colours also reflect the colour of the houses the two characters were in at Hogwarts. It also reflects their philophy on fighting. One likes killing, the other prefers non-violently disarming people.

The opening soundtrack was great, but could've been better if Barty Crouch Jr was removed and followed the book to an extent.

I will say, as someone who read the books extensively as a kid ((to the point that I read them multiple times from the library before getting my own copies)), and Goblet of Fire was one of my favorites... I do like that the book covers Harry's reaction and trauma of the whole Cedric dying thing as near silent shock and going with the motions after coming back to Hogwarts, while the movie just has him just screaming and crying unintelligibly while trying to cling to Cedric's body because he hasn't processed that he's safe now.
Like, both ways fit well in thier respective medium.

The Moody plot is SO much better in the book. In the movie they just had to give not-so-subtle implications there was something suspicious about him. In the book you likely wouldn't guess there's anything off about him, making the twist at the end very effective.

To me Prisoner of Azkaban is the worst of the early movies. Sure it looks pretty, However it makes completely random and pointless changes to characters for no other reason they Alfonzo was looking to put his mark on things, and so much was cut from the story that it comes off confused and disjointed. It is also the only one I have had people who did not read the novels comment that they had no idea what was going on.

My dad never read the hp books cause he hasnct read a single book, but he had watched the movies. I know it's not the same bit he's still kind of a fan. He doesn't understand a lot of things and he's very annoying when he asks for 100 time why did Snape killed Dumbledore (the most common question). Still he likes the movies and his favorite part is the 4th, so I donct think the movie is bad and my dad definitely doesn't... he watched a 100 times. Btw my favorite book is the 4th as well😂

I really like your videos though I disagree on some points. For example, I actually liked it when they sang the hoggy warty Hogwarts song its a silly song that almost makes you cringe but I think it really is a good way of sort of briefly comparing the differences in these very refined, strict, selective schools and the all-accepting Hogwarts and while it's not so much something the typical movie interpretation of Dumbledore would do it totally seems like something book dumbledore would do

I like these videos a lot and you make a lot of great points but I have to point out a couple things - Moody's "Any questions" line is intentionally contradictory. That's the joke. He's daring the kids to question him after he declares "end of story, goodbye, the end." I'm not saying the joke worked, but it WAS intentional.
Secondly, you're wrong about the continuity error with Harry falling down the roof. He's falling feet-first in both shots. I can see how the shot of his torso might be misleading, but if you re-watch it carefully, the shingles are moving *upward*.
Regardless, great analyses and I look forward to watching the others! The bit with Madam Maxime looking over the miniature dragon had me in tears XD
