      Im pretty sure your drill should have a torque setting with a slip clutch which you could have used. I love that you started on the first bolt in impact mode though, pro move.

    • @sandy_knight
      @sandy_knight ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wouldn't use a drill that doesn't have a clutch on it. I'd set the clutch to its lowest setting so it stops easily and tighten the last few turns by hand with the torque wrench. AFAIK it's usually sub 5Nm.

      Don't worry about it, it was probably just a dodgy bolt

    I'd recommend using carbon paste rather than grease for the seat tube and other carbon parts. Grease causes slip but you want "grip" when clamping on carbon to avoid over tightening!

      Ah yes good point! I’ll be sure to get some

    • @nilz6432

      I once greased a seatpost and it slipped for the next half year until i washed it out with half a litre of brake clean. I only use carbon assembly paste now, even on aluminium parts, or mount stuff dry.

      Regular grease is also bad for most plastics (Carbon = Carbon Reinforced Plastic!) as it absorbs into it, and swells the material over time. I've seen big problems regular plastic and rubber parts, no direct experience in carbon though

    • @Metal-Possum

    Nice bike, good build... no matter what tool you use for the disc bolts, start them by hand, and make sure they are not cross-threaded before tightening them... a bit of medium threadlocker is wise too... the drill usually has different torque settings, so wind that collar back to the low one, and finish by hand to the correct torque specs... I hope the grease you used in the seat post and headtube was carbon compatible... ordinary cheap grease can compromise the carbon and the specific stuff has a grippy material in it to help so the bolts don't have to be too tight... I'm sure once your workshop is setup you will have all these supplies on hand for the future...

    It does look really sweet Ali, and 650B wheels makes perfect sense for the sort of stuff you'll be doing on it. Overall, sweet build, might have gone for the 10-45 cassette instead of the 10-51 to get closer gear ratios for exactly when you're playing around and stuck to XT because, maybe sponsored, but ma does it smart when you destroy and XTR RD - if shifting performance was what you were after, would have been better to get the ZTR shifter paired to the XT RD. One thing though, PLEASE, properly adjust/clock that fork axle, that is not how it is supposed to be clocked, it is not actually fully locked like that, it should be vertical.

    • @Ali_Clarkson
      @Ali_Clarkson  ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn’t have much choice on the spec, this is a standard build they do (minus my sponsors parts and the wolf tooth bits), I requested the bike came in bits so I could build it.
      As for the fork…if I had it vertically I think I’d struggle to close it, it’s pretty tight as it is tbf

    • @lynxg4641
      @lynxg4641 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Ali_Clarkson That's why, if you look on the opposite side/NDS to the lock, you'll see a piece that can be rotated to change how the axle threads in to adjust the clocking of the axle.

    Rememberd that IRT was basically invented by a German brand called Chickadee Hill doing their retrofit AWK system and got one of those... Best investment ever... Can leave all the compression open and run much faster rebound, while not diving and having real good compliance.
    I guess that no diving part would be really good for your trials and the armpump issue is definitely worth it on its own.

    Bit of advice for anyone using drills on bikes, most drills have a collar with numbers. It's sort of a torque setting. Keep it at 5 or 6 to run the bolts in before doing all the actual tightening with a proper key. If removing bolts, same thing in reverse. Break them free with the key, run them out with the drill. Never use an impact driver, impacts are too aggressive.

    Some Drills have a built-in torque limiter! This is really really helpful when installing Brake rotors ;)

      Going to have to admit I’m not that familiar with suspension products, with my usual bikes being rigid any half decent suspension is going to feel pretty awesome to me though I’ll no doubt be pumping these up super hard anyway

      @@Ali_Clarkson For some reason I thought it was the Trail 429. When I look at their website now I see there isn't that much difference between Shadowcat and Switchblade except the wheels.
      So then it's the Trail 429 I'd want to test given there's a bigger difference. My bike is a proper good bike, I just feel it's a bit too much bike at times for my use. Needs to be pushed before it wakes up and most of what I ride is slow stuff. It's like a mini enduro.

    Super nice bike with super nice parts! Nice bar spins and whatever they call the nose manual walking the bike back with both feet on the front wheel! Seems you've been working on some new tricks.

    I am extremely picky when it comes to geo and aesthetics for my mtbs, and the downtube not meeting the BB as a straight tube (courtesy of the shock needing somewhere to mount) is the only thing that ruled out Pivot, who were top of my list alongside the YT Izzo (wouldn't work as I don't want a 29er). In the end I'm going the custom frame route. So happy for you though, I know this has been a dream of yours for a long time. Could we see a carbon Pivot trials bike some years in the future? You can take my money now...

    A few brands make a thread pressfit BB that suppose to be better improvement over standard pressfit. Worth looking into it.
