You can hear the direction they eventually ended up going musically in the song 'FORWARD' which closes out this album and which wouldn't sound out of place on their later albums. They played an acoustic version of that song in the acoustic Christmas special.

I'm always amazed by the _it_ factor. Some bands have _it,_ some don't. You can't point to _it,_ you can't test for _it._ _It's_ not technical ability or years of experience. Record labels can't detect _it_ and let bands with _it_ go. But you know _it_ when you hear _it,_ and this band had _it_ from the very beginning. Even if they'd had success from "Be OK" and the first album, I'm not sure much would have changed. I think Kanami always wanted to write for herself and for others and that wouldn't have changed. I think MISA and Akane wanted more freedom, and that wouldn't have changed. Kobato wanted "World Domination" and I doubt a single hit record would have been enough. But who knows?

Recipe. Take an 800 plus year old pigeon who is one of the best amateur poker players in Japan, add experience in a maid cafe, plus a liking for frills and customer engagement, add an eccentric guitarist/songwriter, happy drummer, shy bassist, and shy vocalist -- all of whom light up on stage -- and then play their MV on FaceBook to Westerners. That's the formula that works.

What a good idea Mark! It is interesting to see where the girls have came from. I remember when Saiki wasn't the stage presence and Miku would do all the announcements on stage. Their first album isn't bad, it's just very different. They got an acoustic set of their first album done by Engadget, maybe could be a cool video idea for the future. There's two very early songs I'd love them to play on stage again: Be Ok and Beauty & The Beast. And I agree with you: with a slightly better production and more media presence, this first song could already have been their first success. They'll have to wait untill "Thrill" instead ... and maybe this isn't a bad thing actually: having a huge success with your first record can break a band. Instead, they paid their duties the hard way and it made them stronger, and ready for every fight you'll throw at them!

Yeah there is one Mark, it's messy but beautiful and 2015 in a very tiny club but the energy is 200% and Miku isn't even holding a guitar. In your own time Mark, check it out, it's an absolute blast! (reminds me of seeing punk bands in back room bars circa 1979). As a musician yourself you will recognise a young band, not yet "tight" but with potential and that "it" factor.
    th-cam.com/video/roSAA5OoUfU/w-d-xo.html
I absolutely adore their old Pop-Punk sound. "Be Ok" is still on my best ever Band-Maid track list (so is "Forward" from the same album), but I'm also glad they never stayed with one sound, they continually progress and experiment. It's now at the point we have no f-ing idea what they are going to do next. And that is what sets them apart for me. What goes on in the beautiful mind of Kanami is a mystery, but what comes out of that beautiful mind is a stream of masterpieces.
And just to say, the ladies have always paid the highest respect to their early writers. Kanami said she learnt a lot from them.

That wen't well! (As expected.) The Japanese music and pop culture roots of Band-Maid are kind of varied and complex. But Akutsu Kentaro as their first producer is a legit song-writer and producer in his own right. Kobato managed to convince the Platinum Agency to make a punt at he loopy idea. At the time Akutsu was the agency's main producer and songwriter. He was already writing and producing for the idol-groups PassPo and Predia on the agency's roster.
Possibly it might be a curious experience to check out in particular PassPo. At the time this agency was into "bands" with work-life themes. So PassPo(rt) was a "band" of young girls dancing and singing dressed as flight attendants, with a backing band of "pilots" (double feature of "Ignition" and "Baby Jump" might give the idea). Predia was young women in evening dresses singing, not so much dancing. And right before Band-Maid, and for a longer time the bigger band in the Platinum Agency "family" was "Silent Siren". Which was a band of... models - unlike the idol "bands", but like Band-Maid, the girls in "Sai-sai" really did play themselves. Their "Fujiyama Disco" might be a song to check out? But mostly all this would just be to give relief to Band-Maid.

Quite right about the lack of low/mid texture. These days it's provided (along with some more technical production) by Miku cranking out those low, blanket chords from the Zemaitis humbuckers. It's amazing how some people say she "doesn't add anything" but when she's not in the mix, there's this massive, gaping hole in the sound.

"Be OK" is cheap, but not nasty. It is catchy, upbeat ... and prophetic. Band-Maid *were* going to be OK. Look up folks, happy times for us. Band-Maid is now here. It's going to be OK.

@@markabusireactions sometimes a specific part of a song is so memorable that I need to listen to that on repeat, and those are the moments I am always looking for when listening to music. The riff and follow-up bass slide in the first 10 seconds of Alive-or-dead, the long held note of Saiki at the end of Mirage, Saiki's "oooh" at the beginning of Shake That, the raw and uncontrolled solo of Kanami in Matchless GUM, the jazzy part of Secret My Lips. Those memorable moments make me come back to a song again and again, and there is no genre to that.

Miku doesn't play on any of the songs, unless it's a LIVE video. Kanami does everything except bass & drums, and on the demo that's her too, as well every instrument on the backing tracks. Akane will often complain about Kanami's drum programming, saying, "This drum part cannot be played by a human being." So, it's a good thing "The Beast" is Half Gorilla & Half Drum Machine herself because she always finds a way to make it work. But, for an early song, it's better than 'Thrill', which is derivative of Michael Jackson's 'Thriller'. But, it stands to reason that, since BAND-MAID can play anything, that they do Pop Punk and or Power Pop as good, or better, than anyone else. But, that snare is tuned way too high for Akane. It does give it that trashy sound though.

There was an EP that came out prior to Be OK which contained Ai to Jōnetsu no Matadōru, Thrill, and Summer Drive. It was Thrill's popularity that determined the sound that became Be OK and their future. The other two songs Matador and Drive, were much poppier.

People don't like this album because it's too poppy or not technical enough or whatever. All that is true, but it's still a solid pop-punk/pop-rock entry by a ridiculously talented band that just needed some time to find their voice and hone their craft. The songs are fun and bursting with youthful energy. I always imagine they knocked it out for fun during a beach weekend.
