    My sister had bottom jaw surgery three years ago, and it took her almost a year for all of the swelling to go down and for her to regain feeling in both lips. She went through a lot of what you’re describing - she didn’t like how she looked and even got a bit depressed at one point because of it. However, I can happily say that she loves how she looks now and hasn’t looked back!! It might be a tough next year, but you’ll make it through and be happy you decided to do it ❤️❤️

    I hope you don’t take this the wrong way - so many positive comments below about your new face BUT I do want to validate what you’re seeing, you do look different. I personally think it’s because your cheeks and jaw are slimmer and thus your nose is now a more prominent feature than it used to be. I don’t think you look puffy anymore, actually think your face shape is slimmer overall!

    I had jaw surgery 2 years ago and cried everyday looking in the mirror. My swelling didn’t completely go down for about 1.5 years after my surgery and I’m finally starting to feel and accept myself again! I know it’s hard in the beginning but it will get so much better! I also do not have full nerves back I’m my chin, and at this point they said I won’t haha which is not a big deal because I’m so happy with my new jaw! You got this girl, it just takes time to find yourself again. Never feel bad for being upset or unsure about your appearance, you’re beautiful and in time you’ll begin to feel normal again (especially after you start eating real food again)!! This is your jaw surgery journey and take full advantage of every feeling and experience it flys by

    Don't worry about your nose too much, trust me, my nose looked exactly like yours when it was swollen, even though its a completely different shape, it's still swollen, give it time, don't think about it too much and you'll see your end results eventually. My nose was swollen for 2 months and then went back to normal. The swelling won't go down in one day, it may already be going down little by little and you don't know. You'll get through it, stay positive.

    Hi Shelby! I’m almost 5 most post-op my double jaw surgery and have experienced all the feelings you talked about... I know that people say that your final results are at 3 months post-op, but my surgeon really says to give it a year! I already see such a difference between 3 months post-op and now, especially my facial movements (specifically my upper lip). It’s so hard to be patient, but I am really hopeful that by 1 year I will be so happy with my results!

    Hang in there babe! My body has changed ~drastically~ because of my chronic illness and I totally get what you’re going through. It’s a disconcerting feeling when you look in the mirror and don’t look like yourself, it’s like a form of body dysmorphia. Give it time and give yourself grace. With time, you’ll get used to it and the muscles will improve. You will have more hard days but you’ll have less and less bad days as time passes. When you’re having a bad day, don’t be hard on yourself, let yourself feel everything you need to feel and don’t beat yourself up for feeling that way. What you’re going through is hard but also normal! Take it day by day and you’ll get through it ❤️

    I completely understand! After jaw surgery I remember having multiple breakdowns about how much I hated my new face. But, just remember that the full swelling takes about six months to a year to fully go down and for you to see what your face will actually look like.
    Also, I will never forget how weird it was to eat solid food for the first time. I remember I got to the point where I was so hungry that I would swallow foods whole because I couldn’t handle soft foods anymore. But (after re-learning to chew) eating harder foods made such a difference! It helped me regain feeling in certain parts of my face which really helped with expression.
    Unfortunately, I still don’t have complete feeling in parts of my face and it’s 6 years post-op, but I definitely don’t regret my decision to get jaw surgery.❤️

    i don’t even know if you’ll see this but i started accutane at about the same time you started your surgery journey and i went through a really hard time in the beginning with it cause it made my acne way way worse. just watching someone else go through an intense life change that affected their appearance made me feel less alone and i just want to say thank you because when i was really depressed about my appearance, watching someone else persist through something similar gave me strength not to give up on myself and also that the human body needs time to heal. so thank you shelby, you genuinely made a difference in my life these last couple months.

    The easiest way to get through this is telling yourself that this was how you were supposed to look like in the first place. Your nose actually resembles Monica's more now, and since she's your twin that's not a bad thing haha.

  • @MarkMcLT
    @MarkMcLT 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Just removing the wire made a big difference, confirming my impression that the constraints on your mouth movement were a big part of the difference in how you look. I'm sure as you get more of that movement back you'll see even more improvement.

    I got jaw surgery in January, and I honestly didn't feel okay with how I looked until about 7- 8 months post op. It's natural to go through some sort of identity crisis, because it's your face and something you've spent your entire life looking at. But take solace in that you are still swollen (like way more than you think you are) and everything will settle in eventually. Also I still can't even feel parts of my face even now.

    The emotions associated with adjusting to seeing your face differently are so valid! About 6 months ago I experienced an injury to my face that still hasn't healed completely and although people tell you you look "normal," it can be hard to see yourself in the mirror! It will get better and you will start to feel like yourself again before you know it! You'll get through this, stay strong!!!

  • @carableu
    @carableu 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I see so much healing! It is a process and you will continue to heal over time. As you eat, as swelling reduces, muscle movement is restored, and everything settles into place you will begin to feel like yourself again. It is still quite early in the process. And that is a major surgery. You look beautiful, and things are only going to get better.

    I got double jaw surgery a few years back while in college so I totally get it and felt the same way! I found that it took about 9 months to fully de-swell (the last like 10% of swelling took a while to finally come down) but for the most part my face looks pretty similar to how it looked pre-surgery, with full mobility and all!!

    I think it’s okay to feel the way you do. Your feelings are valid. You’ve had a procedure and it’s taking some time for everything to heal. You’re still adorable. I bet if on your next vlog you’d leave a question for your viewers and supporters about an experience they’ve had or how they’ve changed, physically, with time and how they adapted to that change. Would be interesting to see everyone’s reply.

    Hi Shelby i had rhinoplasty, it took one year before my nose got its shape and swollen completely went away. One thing you can do is to massage your face daily to shape it differently. You should look into it. Personally ithink you look good. The most importantly is that your jaw doesn't hurt. Dont be hard on yourself!

      I got alarplasty and it took 3 to 6 months for the swelling to subside. It already looks okay after a month, but I really appreciated the results and all the swelling and muscles settled after 6 months. Imagine breaking and realigning your jaw, I'd expect that to normalize longer than 3 months

    It's definitely the muscles. Once you get control of them again, your face is going to look so much better! Keep doing facial muscle exercises and you'll be back to normal in no time 🙂
    Btw, the pizza eating was hilarious 😂

    I started following you recently and seeing the difference is amazing! Give yourself some grace, you had major surgery but I’m loving your results! Def less swollen, a little stiff but as your work the muscle more it’ll feel more natural 💕

    I feel so bad your doctor didn’t tell you that your face would change that much.

    Hey, i had this surgery done last year - and i hated to look at my new face for the first 6 months but it does get better. You are gonna love the results but you have to give it time - lots of love from denmark

    I am 1 week post op from DJS. In my country it is required to undergo (free) counselling sessions after surgery to help come to terms with looking different. It's only natural to feel confused and weirded out by not seeing the same person you've seen your whole life. I find it strange that in the US surgeons/health care professionals don't recommend counselling afterwards to come to terms with it. Maybe it is something you should consider. Sorry for my long rant, sending you lots of love and strength

    I felt the EXACT same way. You are absolutely correct that the muscles are still kind of frozen and the numbness affects how you can move your lips and speak. I promise you it will get better ❤️ I know it sounds like an eternity but it was 2 years before I was okay with my face. I got upset often in the first couple of years. Have a good cry and then break open some wine and delicious food. Keep good company and do your facial exercises!

    Give it 6 months and when you start chewing harder foods again, your face will change more.

    I had a bone graft before getting my dental implants in, and I felt the same way! I literally cried saying I would never look the same again. It takes time 💕

    You look really good, you are comparing your face with a fully makeuped previous face.

    It takes more time to heal completely. Your face will still be changing in months. Trust me, As a dentist I know many patients who didn’t like their look first but they end up liking it.

    I'm so glad you were able to see what we see at least a little bit - you still look like you! I think once you get full use of your "animation" muscles you will be much happier with your new face!

    I feel for you girl!! I noticed in your last video about the top lip, but I thought you could t feel it but the muscles just aren’t moving yet. I hope when they do you feel more at ease with your face, having something Change that you spent your whole life looking at is a big deal! You’re allowed to get upset! I can notice the change but I honestly thought it was the lip not moving right yet so I hope it works out and it is okay/ you become more okay with the changes, you’re doing so well! 💕🙂

    Your face looks great! I think you’re just super critical of yourself, which anyone would be. When I had a total thyroidectomy from cancer, I had a huge scar across my neck for months and was convinced that everyone could see it and would stare or judge me. And my fsce was so swollen too which is how so nicely captured in my license picture lol

    I get it. I worked for Clinique for years and one thing I remember that everyone had issues with their face. Even the most beautiful women would focus on a freckle and say it would depress them to look at it. My lesson was to take seriously what my customers were saying because if it was important to them it was important to me. You do look great Shelby!

    I think its legit the facial animation like you had said, and i'm sure anyone going from looking at themselves a certain way for their whole life would be scared or sad or shocked for a long while. its a real adjustment

    I had jaw surgery in high school, so I feel your pain girl! Don’t worry about not liking your face just yet. Your facial muscles tend to atrophy a bit after jaw surgery since they’re not being used like before. As you regain your strength and use those muscles throughout your healing process you’ll like your face a lot more 💜 I know it sounds crazy but give it a year or so lol
