Yea. I always tell people, and it usually surprises them, but Philip and the band thought Reinventing The Steel was their best record. That literally *part* of the reason they went on a break. Anyway i always thought they wrote the best, most interesting ballads of their career on Trendkill (10s, Floods, Suicide Note 1)and their brst GROOVY songs on REINVENTING THE STEEL(Goddamn Electric, Yesterday Dont Mean Poop, Revolution Is My Name, It Makes Them Disappear, and I'll Cast A Shadow).
I loved how Phil really started singing again on almost every Steel song. Classic album

Don't underrate Rex's role man, Vinnie and Rex were tight AF! The fact is that all three of them were tight AF, and that is why despite being only a 3pc band the sound was massive and there was no drop off from Dime going into solos. Thank God I got to see them live in '94!

    • @Rickkelley365
      @Rickkelley365 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

murilo ninj Rex often wrote the rhythm parts under Dimes solos in the studio. Rex also did creative things in their live shows to support those solo spots.

      @gringochucha 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yeah, was just thinking this when watching some live Pantera videos the other day. In a four-piece band as tight and groovy as Pantera, the bass player is a crucial part of the mix, and Rex was a champ holding down the fort whenever Dime went into a solo. Definitely the most underrated member of the band.

Yeah, it's amazing they didn't need an additional guitarist to sound like that. How many metal bands only have one guitarist? And they were the heaviest, most dynamic band in the world, sonically. Unreal skill all around.

Your story about Vince and your remarks about how the Abbott Bros treated their fans reminded me of a story I read in a magazine years ago about they met David Allan Coe and eventually formed Rebel Meets Rebel. Dime and Vince went to a DAC show and wanted to meet him afterwards, and instead of using their star power to get ahead of everyone, they actually waited in line with everyone else. They finally get up to the front, and Dime goes all fanboy saying "Oh we're so happy to meet you, my name is Darrell and this is my brother Vince, and we have this little band called Pantera." He ended up giving him some Pantera CDs to listen to and they hit it off, but they were always humble and never treated anyone like they were lesser. They loved their fans because they remained fans themselves.

I was on the way to the gym when I heard of his passing on the radio... and I had to pull off the road into a side lot and cry. I wept like I’d lost a soul mate...
I was the daughter of a preacher/butcher and his gospel musician wife... I’d sneak up to our one television at night and get as close to the mono speaker as I could and flip the channel to MTV... for HEADBANGER’S BALL! Why did I risk this? Because once, I was home alone and caught the video for “Walk” and I was never the same. I NEVER listened to “hair metal”. I was more of a 1989 Pretty Hate Machine NIN fan... bit then I heard Dime and Vinnie. I’d never FELT anything like that before. Pure adrenaline powering through the heavy sludge of southern blues.
Pantera started my love affair with metal - and Vinnie was the heartbeat of the passion I found within.

I remember the exact moment hearing of Big Vin’s passing. I cried like I had just lost a close family member. He was the reason I picked up a pair of drum sticks 25 years ago and he’s been my inspiration from the first time I heard Pantera’s “Becoming”.
Now my 14 year old son is an incredible drummer and I owe it all to Vinnie, Dime, and all of Pantera. This world has never and will never be the same without them.

I don’t usually comment on the videos I watch but your Vinnie story took me back to when I was able to meet him. It was a small club in Deep Ellum with a local band playing. There was maybe 60-80 people there and he was just hanging out toward the back with a drink in his hand talking with what appeared to be someone he was there with. I had to go say hi and tell him what Pantera has meant to me and that I was stoked to see what he and Dime were going to do with Damageplan. He stopped what he was doing turned to me and began to tell me first thank you and that there were gonna be some killer songs on the album. It as a brief interaction but he didn’t have to even give me the time of day but he did. Especially since he was in mid conversation but I was 19 and star struck about a hometown hero.

Then as they grew up their music changed with them and people give em shit for it. They still play what they want to play. Are the albums good? Well I guess that's debatable... Point is playing what you want to play doesn't make you a sell out

Couple things to fuel the Pantera-vs-Metallica rage debate:
    1. If Black Sabbath's "Planet Caravan" (which Pantera covered, remember) is metal, then so is "Nothing Else Matters."
    2. Pantera started off as a hair band. So were they being "true to themselves" when they started off as hair metal, or when they abandoned that in favor of groove metal?
    You decide.

Just found your channel mate, love your reactions and how informative they are. I've just started playing again in the last few week after not playing drums for 16 years. First few days were quite sloppy but starting to get my groove back.
Vinnie Paul was my hero growing up, his rack toms were 14 and 15 with an 18 floor and 2 massive 24" kick drums.
It's interesting that although he used triggers live in the studio he didn't and that was a common misconception. For his kick drums in the studio to get that sound you hear he used wooden beaters and had a quarter coin duct taped to each kick so when the wooden beaters hit them it produces that sound you think is triggered but actually wasn't.
    Dime and Vinnie rip.

PANTERA will always be timeless. In my opinion they're still relevant to this day and I'm confident that I'm not the only one who feels that way. I'm gonna stop right there because I can talk PANTERA for days.

@JunkDrummer....Along with the 24”x20” bass drum(s), Vinnie used 2-14”x14” toms, a 15”x15” tom, and an 18”x16” floor tom.

Super Joint ritual. You can tell Phil helped write alot of Pantera riffs. The first Super Joint album from 1995 was like a Pantera album

Right on brother!..Pantera is the best metal band period!..but of all the kick ass songs they created...you picked Walk?..just messing with ya..we used that song in highschool for our wrestling entrance theme back in 94..it got soooo much radio play...its good to hear that Phil is gonna start playing Pantera songs while on tour with his other bands now..all the new metal heads will get to hear the real deal! #GetchaPull

1:48 to 1:57, I fucking love you man. pls we need more people like you
I also think they probably the best
But there's also megadeth, iron Maiden, judas priest
I think those are the best heavy metal bands
I know there's a lot of new good bands like slipknot etc but they can never be as tasteful and flavored heavy metal unique and different till this day 29 years ago and they definitely don't need 10+ members and masks. just 4 guys who that gonna rock your hair off
Rip Dime and Vinnie ♡ still living through their masterpiece pantera

Vulgar Display of Power was NOT recorded with a click track. That alone is amazing in itself considering how insanely tight that album sounds.

This drummer was awesome, had chops but fit the song and his huge sound, really gave Pantera it’s thunder.
I think the ride was a Megabell ride by Zildjian, here in Melbourne,Australia, drummers fondly called it the Dolly Parton cymbal.
Was fortunate to see them in ‘96.

Probably the band I have seen the most live... First time was the VDoP tour with Skid Row in 1992. So many memories with friends, long roadtrips and parties. My most memorable show was in Montreal in 1994 for the Far Beyond Driven Tour w/Crowbar. I was 17 years old and managed to get an afterparty access pass and they transformed the balcony of the venue into a club after the show with a sound system and lights. It was Big Val's birthday party and it turned into a crazy food fight with the cake. They had strippers come to entertain the fans... a real front-row seat into the sex, drugs and rock & roll lifestyle exactly like their "Home Videos". The whole crew (except Phil who was sick) was there to party and had such a blast with Dimebag. Another fan there happened to have a disposable camera with him before the cellphone cameras LOL and I was able to take pictures with my idols which he mailed to me afterwards. I'll never forget how down to earth the guys were and how welcoming and appreciative they were with their fans.

I grew up with Duran Duran, Tears for Fears and those kind of bands in the 80's. Only metal band I ever dug into was Pantera. To me they're the most hard hitting, yet musical metal band ever. Still like my 80's pop, but Pantera is the only metal I listen to. Still remember when I saw "I'm Broken" on MTV the first time. So groovy - and awesome rock'n'roll guitar solo.

Man I adore you just because of your opening „pantera is the greatest metal band of all time“ you’re damn right! They opened a new chapter in metal!
I am still so thankful that I saw them live in 1993 in my hometown Vienna, Austria, Europe when I was 14. the first concert of my life and so proud off!

I had to look up drum triggers. That's pretty interesting. I figure it helped his tech and the sound guy out quite a bit every night, and consistently gave the crowd the heaviest sound. Wish I could have seen Pantera. RIP Vinnie and Dimebag.

Actually he used a 14 and 15 Tom's up front both square sizes so it be 14X14 and 15X15 and the floor was an 18X18 with kick drums that were 24X24 ... monsters drums for a monster drummer. Had to comment because I heard you mention that more than a few times and it was driving me crazy.
