    There's been a lot said about Trails through Daybreak 2, since it's been out in Japan for quite some time. Some people have said it's the worst Trails game out there - period. But IS it? Let's dive in and take a look.

    I'm glad to hear this, because I've heard so much negativity about this game and it's really brought my excitement down, which has been unfortunate, because like you, I am a huge Trails fan. I had a friend who knows my tastes in video games better than I do who recommended the series to me... I started playing Zero, and then CS1, and then Azure, and at that point, decided to go back to the beginning. I didn't love the graphics of Sky, so I switched to the Vita EVO versions and that made me appreciate Sky so much more. At that point, I was incredibly hooked, had a ton of merch, and motored right through to Daybreak, which came out just days after I finished Reverie.
    It's been the first time I had to wait for a Trails game, but I am glad it is finally coming out and I'll get a Trails fix!
    I'm also really happy to see Swin and Nadia back. I'd love to see Ash come back at some point since he's my favorite character in the series, but I know that's likely to never happen.

    I mean, I've loved every Trails game, even the ones some people thought weren't great. So I'm confident I'm going to love this too. Sure, the pacing of the story might end up being weird, but like I've seen a couple of people say in the comments here, sometimes it could be a setup chapter for something big. And if they're truly winding down the series soon, then more setup chapters may be necessary so they can stick that landing. I ended up getting caught up on the series (Cold Steel 3 and 4, Reverie, and Daybreak) at the end of 2024 as I got laid off in September and I just tore through them all and loved every minute of all of them. Sucks that I'm back to work in a way because I'll have to take Daybreak 2 slower, haha.
    But yeah. Still really excited to play this one.

      Actually the reviews are mostly from summaries of the main story from people who understands Japanese and interpreted what they viewed from streams of a Japanese playthrough or what they played themselves like www.youtube.com/@samfarron for example. The MTL part is mostly the NPC conversations so if you only care about the main story then they're not really that far off the mark but if you play for the world building then yes judging bases on the MTL would not be fair. Take Kai for example the MTL only showed up less than 2 weeks ago but most fan opinions were formed 3 months earlier when English speakers who understand it summarized their playthroughs.

    Alert: my comment may contain a little spoiler of the game.
    I played this game (Asian Version) 2 years ago.
    Daybreak II consists of three main story chapters and three antagonists. If it were sold as three DLCs for Daybreak 1, with a reasonable price, it would easily receive a rating of 9 out of 10.
    However, by combining the three chapters and adding some mediocre or/and rough filler contents, then releasing it as a full price game, it is not good enough. It can only earns a 6.5 or 7 out of 10.
    Although the main storyline of the game is hindered by these factors , Daybreak II still manages to score above average, demonstrating that it has many outstanding qualities, such as the excellent Connection Event stories, the continuously improving hybrid battle system. (Speaking of which, Kai no Kiseki features an even MUCH better system; it is a masterpiece of hybrid battle systems. I hope it will be released worldwide soon.)

    First of all, thank you for an earnest and heartfelt review! It’s interesting… one of my favorite things about “Sky FC” was the way the game basically entailed traveling around and solving local problems while looking for signs of a missing loved one, all while the larger narrative slowly built in the background. I also loved (most) of the Doors in “Sky the 3rd” for their episodic quality and the opportunity they gave to check back in on characters whose arcs had mostly resolved within the initial duology. But with “Daybreak”… some chapters were great, some were very good, and others were just the abysmal Chapter 3.
    I can thoroughly enjoy a quieter, more episodic “Daybreak 2” so long as it isn’t an entire game of “Daybreak” Chapter 3s strung together, and so long as I am not meant to endure a Dance-Off Battle for the City’s Soul with a straight face after slogging through hours of buildup for which that is the apparent “payoff.” But it’s hard to really pinpoint how this will feel until I experience it for myself, so we’ll see!
    Thanks again for the review. :-)

I liked the mystery f the threatening letters too, not to mention Gerard showing up for the first time. While yers, chapter 3 is the worst of Daybreak, all of Daybreak is the best Trails

    Even if this is a "bad" trails game, even the worst trails game is still better than the best game of any other series, so I'm still going to get this on day 1 next Friday. My theory about having to beat Cold Steel 4 twice has always been that Falcom put that in there and they expected players to be able to figure it out on their own, and were surprised when people didn't get it. That's why they had to have Lloyd explain the ending of Cold Steel 4 explicitly one game later, something Trails almost never does.
    I am extremely confident that the reviews for this game are going to be really harsh. The people who played a translated version of the game have set the expectations for it, and I there's nothing youtube likes more than piling on. The thing you said is critical: Trails re-contextualizes what you saw in a previous game with a reveal in a subsequent game all the time. Can't wait till next week to play this for myself.

    I have been defending this game for a long time. It's true is not a great Trails game, and I can see the issues it has. However, I think those issues have been exaggerated. The expectation of this being the usual sequel game is probably what hurts it the most. This game doesn't work in that regard. However, characterization wise, this game does a lot of it right, specially on the intermission. Gameplay wise is way better than Daybreak 1 as well.
    Regarding the localization/machine translation:
    Machine translations, compared to a human translation, are bad, but they have also come a long way. It really helps as well if you understand how they usually work so that you detect the usual errors it has, and also have some knowledge of the language being translated as well. It's understandable that this method is not for everyone, but, please don't disregard the knowledge of someone who played the game using machine translation. Even though they can get several things wrong, it's also possible to understand the game completely as well.
    The official localization is for the most part really good, but it has a few things that are translated very poorly, sometimes I guess they didn't get the intent of that part, others are changes because they want to give that term a similar significance to what Japanese "feel" and that means changing it, and finally there are times that they just don't know the significance of the term/sentence in future games and the translation even though it worked originally, it became a problem later on.
    The issue with the "Chance" and "There" is probably because there are several conditions that trigger those words, and, unless they change how those voice overs are coded, they can't give a better translation without sounding weird on a different situation the voice over is used.

    • @Mattjazz47
      @Mattjazz47 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I'm sure this game is great even as a sequel. Playing Tears of the Kingdom as a sequel made me appreciate other sequels more because that game was the worst sequel I ever play.

    • @Ribose5
      @Ribose5 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

       @Mattjazz47 Actually you're probably pretty close on "Chance" and "There", but there's another nuance. Oftentimes, they have to time it very strictly to the length of the Japanese audio, especially battle action voices, so the gameplay is not delayed or the sound is not cut off by normal play (High-Speed Mode/user skipping excluded). So usually the default way to handle them is to expect "timed" for a whole class of lines and I guess that's how they come out so not everyone's saying "Now". I honestly never noticed they used "Chance" or "There", my gripe personally is "Drive" for casting, starting with CS3. I know what term they translated to get there, it's like the "arts casting" term the series has always used.
      Anyway, I respectfully disagree about the actual scale of problems. It's usually more often clerical error type mistakes that took a while to get addressed, since it takes a long time to get the developer to actually implement changes (see Reverie). I think Daybreak and II should be in slightly better shape. There are definitely gripes people have with choices made in the past, but that's inevitable. I think they do a good job accounting for/addressing lore-related stuff, though, if you play through them in context.

    • @Natreg44
      @Natreg44 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Mattjazz47 What I meant by sequel is the way Trails presents their second game in an arc. In that regard, Daybreak is not a good game. They do follow a few important points that were left out vague in the previous title, but it's not the usual Trails sequel that rewards you for playing the introduction game as Sky SC, Azure, CS2 and CS4 were like.
      Daybreak 2 feels like if the introduction game was chopped in 2, having the most content on the first game, and most of the not so important content on the second game.
      It's similar to CS1/2 being Cold Steel's introduction, and CS3/CS4 being the second act of the arc, but the difference is that both acts in Cold Steel worked well as the usual pairs of Introduction/sequel Trails usually does.

      @@Natreg44 thats subjective because a lot of people already felt that way with the series as a whole and what you might consider filler in Daybreak 2 could be relevant for other people. I'm an One Piece fan so these arguments are not new to me especially when it comes to arcs.

      Welcome to the trails games, I'll try to help!
      To start off, each game has coming back characters which you can go "Who's that?" if you don't start with the Trails in the Sky games (Liberl arc), but starting anywhere should be fine if you don't mind that, especially with a remake on the way with "Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter" you might want to hold off on the Sky games.
      Trails of Cold Steel (Erebonia arc) is what got me into the games and where I personally started, I remember playing 1,2 and 3 before touching Crossbell and Sky. As for my personal recommendation, the Crossbell arc is my favorite arc with the SSS team and Lloyd Bannings as my favorite main character in the series, you can start with "Trails from Zero" for that arc, I love every single characters that you party with and the story for each of them. As for gameplay and style, I don't want to overwhelm you with an essay, check screenshots or videos of the Crossbell arc and Cold steel, it's vastly different in visual styles, it comes down to your taste. I like both style, but not everyone does. Gameplay is not too different per games, I always played them on Nightmare since it's a trophy/achievement requirement, but I learned the hard way how to play the games because of it. Without going too much into it, there is a thing with evasion you can look into, but I don't want to spoil anything for you. Some fights are brutal on nightmare without proper setups, maybe don't play on that difficulty unless you don't mind what I said. Hopefully I helped a little to come to a decision with my perspective!

After all, NISA sure thought that Geofront’s translations of Zero and Azure were high quality enough to use them as the basis of their official releases. Also, zerofield’s work(the fan TL group that received a C&D from NISA after completing a spreadsheet for kuro 1) also deserves to be considered.

    Oh, hey, an even-handed review. Fancy that.
    Just to clear this up, it should be noted that Reverie was only developed because Falcom had spent so much time making their own engine that Daybreak was still too early in development when it was supposed to be their new game for that year, so they opted to make Reverie so they could reuse assets for CS3/4 and have it ready in time. In light of that and Kai no Kiseki's ending, the split endings for CS4 were likely foreshadowing for the Calvard arc rather than Reverie, but they had some early payoff in the latter instead.
    Also, don't worry about Seven Hearts. Almost no one gets it, and even the ones who do seem to generally agree it's not worth playing. Anyone who tells you otherwise is probably trolling.

It might not have come up in trails, but there are numerous cases of translation knowingly changing the meaning of a scene because they thought their version was better, and recognizing that doesn't automatically make you a conspiracy crazy or a terrible person. The goal of localization should be to convey original intent in a way that resonates with the receiving language. You can't just assume that anyone who is skeptical about localizers must love stilted, awkward literal translations, that's a false dichotomy.
    Anyway, thank you for an honest review, I'm buying day 1!

    My personal opinion is that it's obviously inferior to Kuro 1 (which I consider one of the best in the series), but of course that's in terms of story (which is admittedly the most important aspect in this franchise).
    Mechanically speaking, Kuro II improves pretty much everything over Kuro, the addition of mini-games was much needed, combat felt better (same idea, but more polished, buth action and turn-based) and all of this allowed Kuro II to have something the first didn't which is things that take you away from the typical routine within the game, which is something I did appreciate.
    Yeah, story-wise Kuro is better, but I felt Kuro II was nice, maybe except for that final act (which I'm not gonna spoil of course), but it was not bad in the way that ruins stuff for the overarching plot, so I really didn't care too much. And up to the intermission I think it was pretty damn good.
    All in all, I think this game is clearly not part of my, say, top 5 Trails games... but I definitely don't consider it the worst either, and I definitely don't consider it a bad game.
    Also, we all part of the Vandwagon

    Also I wanna say that I never played any Trails game but I do want to start with the remaster of Trails in the Sky and then if I'm hooked I would continue 2 and 3 in the Steam versions so I don't have to wait that much.
    Is this a good idea or should I reconsider my plan?

    AH Spoiler Alert on CS4! Hahaha I still haven't started CS3, but I skipped ahead as soon as I heard you say something about fighting the End boss 2x. Guess that's my fault for watching a DB2 Vid without being anywhere near caught up. Been too many awesome games out lately! I haven't finished metaphor because FF7R came out and now KCD2! Too many games!
    BTW, I have heard of ReZero and added it to a loose anime list I want to watch sometime, is that one good? I have been soo out of the anime loop for years and years, I got back in a little bit because of Demon Slayer. Its hard to find time, any free time I have goes to gaming but I really do want to watch some good anime again too.
    So - video idea - maybe you could do a "sidequest" video on anime! I think that would be fun to watch, maybe a top 10 or something you like. I mean Trails / Anime -- I think the audience is probably overlapping here!

    Yeah seven Hearts is kinda weird. I think the main way to play is getting hit early and getting a lot of cards to win but its very RNG heavy. sometimes the bots just steal your cards right before the game ends and you cant rly do anything against it and is especially annoying when your teammate steals your cards and loses you the game. having the steal cards card is also just an autowin most of the time. I hope they are going to expand upon it in kai.

      @@MonicaMoraal I mean there's the forced rean harem which leads to complete character assassination for all the women, the absolutely awful writing of Angelica, the complete and total lack of stakes in the story because every single tense moment in the story results with the main characters being saved by other characters jumping in at the last second, the overly saccharine dialogue, the list goes on.

      @edsheeran1243 Despite the fact that absolutely zero main characters die in Azure and the only death in SC is Loewe yet everyone sits and praises those games as JRPG masterpieces. The forced harem shtick is definitely an issue that is in all of the cold steel games, but it's more supplementary material than anything that doesn't ruin any of their characters for me. It makes perfect sense why any of them would like Rean. I liked Angelica in Cold Steel 2, but I agree her character just became pervert anime character number 550. I like the dialogue too honestly, and the character writing is still just as great as ever. Especially for new class 7.
