As an autistic daughter myself, I can relate to this on another level. I am 14 years old rn and I'm not allowed to cook, only bake. I'm definitely not allowed to touch the knife, I still have parental controls on my devices even though I was supposed to be able to decide whether I wanted to manage my own account or not on my 13th birthday. My mom packs my lunch, definitely invades my privacy and also talks about my autism in a way that gives me insecurities just like the part in the video where Lauren's mom tried to tell her why she can't have a boyfriend. Honestly, I almost teared up watching this because it's the most relatable thing I've ever seen in my life. This video is just so heartwarming. I also just feel like my mom doesn't trust me. She doesn't even let me go outside by myself unless I have to walk home from my coding class and she only allows that because my little brother walks with me + she makes me text her to assure her that I am ok. Honestly, even though this is just a story, I'm so glad that everything turned out well for Lauren because I don't know if it will be the same for me. Me and my mom had a talk today and she is definitely ok with me going to college once I graduate hs but I feel like she wants me to stay near home and start with community college before transferring. She said that I would need to stay and "grow up more" because I can't do my laundry, I can't cook and I am terrible at cleaning (I wonder why). Also, I would need a job which is a big change. At this point, this video just reminds me of my mom and I'm scared that she might stalk me like that too. Honestly, I don't know anything anymore. If you're not autistic then pls don't judge us. I feel overwhelmed constantly because of having to worry about not only what my mom would say but what other people would think. We are aware of our condition because we hear a lot from our parents. They will soon realize the strengths, abilities and positives autistic people. I don't speak for one autistic person, I speak for every autistic warrior right round the world. It will take more than autism to stop us.
32:29, that’s literally breaking and entering sweetheart. Also can I just say how relatable Lauren is in this? Like I have autism and the mood swings, miniature “panic” attacks, negative thinking & isolation are just some of the things that people, especially me, can relate to.
Same! I feel like one thing goes wrong, and I feel like there's a curse over my head. It makes me want to sink into full on meltdown mode. Spending time in nature really helps to keep me grounded.

The message of personal growth and overcoming challenges despite having autism is inspirational. It encourages everyone to live their life freely beyond the limitations imposed by others.
Even the number ‘18’ itself screams responsibilities. The reason why Lauren was so disorganised in the first place was all her mums fault for not letting her do anything. Just because someone is autistic, doesn’t mean they should take any less responsibilities. I’m an autistic 16 year old and my parents have let me make my own decisions for years now and rarely ever hold me back from doing anything, proof that having an autistic son/daughter IS NOT AN EXCUSE
John 14:8 - If God is all you have, you have all you need. Psalm 46:1 - God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. I can’t believe her mom controlled her life like that. I have autism too my mom never did anything like she did to Lauren. I bet she was the one that found away to reject her from the art college. I can’t believe she talked to Bradley and told him and Lauren to go their separate ways. All because of Autism?! I have autism and everyone treats me the same way as they do everyone else. So yeah Lauren is like everyone else we all are. Disability or not we are like everyone else everyone of us. If her mom was that upset about Lauren leaving her after her father died because she felt like she was going to be alone why didn’t she tell her that before? You should always talk with your kids if you feel that way but don’t keep them back from their dreams. Kids will always visit their parents and never be gone forever when they leave. At least they were able to talk and forgive each other.
Exactly! And such a mother is a control freak. SHE wants to be the one in control of Lauren's life and SHE wants to be the only one in charge. She is a possessive mother who thinks of Lauren has her extension and this is HORRIBLE. I would rather that we drop the autism label except for severe cases (we can call that mental retardation if you want). Bring back the R word and stop the PC junk.
I’m a 30 year old autistic who’s struggled with depression and anxiety for six years, but I have a job, a bus pass, a bank account, I know how to cook, clean, tidy up, do chores and everything by myself, but I have never been mollycoddled in my life. But I often have my own dreams too, but most of them died with covid and the loss of my grandfather and other friends. I struggle to hold myself together, but o have friends and family to help me. I feel sorry for you in every way, Lauren, I know what it feels like. Besides, that dummy who badmouthed should have gotten a kick up the backside.
39:42 listen I know you want to protect your daughter because her father passed away but this is not what the father wanted he probably once his daughter to live her own life
Lots of episodes are not realistic anyways. But the whole video shows that infantilization is real for autistic people and I cannot stomach that women are especially prone to it.
Fr. My school lunches are actually pretty good. But it’s the fact that we only get like 22 min to eat. PLUS, they almost NEVER shut up in those mics at lunch.
I was literally in tears at the end. This is such an amazing Dhar Mann video. I really love it how at the end Lauren and her mom see each other after 3 years and she comes back to her to apologize after what she’s done❤🥲🥺

This is literally how narcissistic moms be, just straight up demons, don't wanna see anyone else happy and just care about nothing but dragging others into darkness with them. I may not relate to having autism but ik what it's like growing up with a controlling mom(especially when they take advantage of their disabled children) I can go on and on but this video is merely scratching the surface, super relatable.
It's bad enough to be unlucky enough to date a controlling partner , & worse still if it happens to be one of your family members. Unfortunately, even your family members can be controlling, Isolate you, Treat you like a child, Doesn't let you have any freedom & independence, Controls the purse strings, I've got some of my own to add , Yep, Controls who you associate with, & the kind of people to associate with, Controls your hobbies, (eg sketching, like, dictate what kind of people you have in your artwork), Controls what you buy, (e.g. your family member or partner gets mad when you buy , say a 100th pair of shoes for example), Checks your phone or emails, Tells you what to eat, wear, & when to eat, wear, bathe, & sleep, & wake up, With a toxic family member/partner , you're way better off without them. All they do is make you miserable, & drag you down in to their toxic little world. That's what Lauren's mom did to her in that storyline.
I don’t think I’ve seen a more relatable Dhar Mann video. My name is Olivia, I’m Autistic, I just graduated this year, I have never had a job before, never dated, although.. my mom and dad want me to go back to high school for an extra year instead of college. They think I have so much more to learn. I am dreading going back because my one friend that I had at school got in a fight and she was 2 years behind me. So she’s going to be there. I sobbed yesterday because I just cannot see her or talk to her again… but I really don’t wanna disappoint my parents. I’m stuck between 2 predicaments… and school starts in like a week.. I’m so panicked, I can’t make up my mind, they say it’s fine if I don’t go back, but when they told me that, they sounded very angry/disappointed. I don’t know what to do. I just can’t go back… Any advice please?..
That woman's a hypocrite! *With her older daughter, she approved of her dating a guy. But with her younger daughter, she didn't. *All children must be treated equally-disabled, autistic or not-especially when they're dating. •A very important message for all parents and guardians out there! If they're dating the right people, then there's nothing to worry about. If things go bad, they'll tell you.
Just because someone has a disability doesn't mean they have a problem. They can learn and do amazing things, just like the Good Doctor television show. He became a doctor, a great doctor!❤😂🎉
As someone who is autistic and has a tough relationship with her mom, this hits hard, I feel like a puppet most of the time and always giving into my mom since I’m always scared of the consequences, with online friends who have been there for me through thick and thin out of the picture, being grounded if I cried over the littlest things, and for some time, I wanted to be a model but I don’t think I want to anymore as life is planning out new things for me, as I’m thinking about trying out performing arts and learning how to draw, and hopefully break free from my mom’s strings as soon as I turn 18
Aww, I'm sorry. But I'll talk more about that in another reply. But you might be able to leave home under 18. It might not be illegal to leave home under 18. Whether you will be forced home might be a decision by the police though.
I'm 23 years old, and my mom never got this overprotective when she found out I had autism when I was a baby. She didn't do parental controls on any of my devices, nor did she ever do the whole gps tracker thing. She, thankfully trusts me to limit myself on my phone, which is why I set timers on my apps. and when the timer is up, it's up. To anyone who has been treated like this, I am so sorry. Here's something that might make you all feel better: Psalm 94:18-When I said, my foot is slipping, your love, Lord, supported me.
John 14:8 - If God is all you have, you have all you need. Psalm 46:1 - God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Her Overprotective is to blame for her daughter being so unorganised . Not to mention being so shy, insecure, & unsure of herself. Her Overprotective mom has a lot of explaining to do. That story is so triggering to me cause my mom was just like that in my school/cherry orchard years too. I live in South London The U.K., not the USA. My mom wouldn't ket me go to mainstream discos when everyone else was, & still makes me feel very bitter about it even now!. I feel very sorry for lauren in that storyline.
As an autistic person, this touched me. Plus, it made me thankful that my strict tiger mother at least gave me some independence. Robbing an autistic person of capability and independence will create lifetime issues.

I could relate. Whenever my family has a social gathering, I couldn't mingle with 1 person without my mother looking over my shoulder, at dinner, she's always staring at my plate, and when I accidentally burp and say excuse me, she always gives me that dirty look.

I have autism myself. Us autistic people are not perfect at everything. However, people don't know what we're capable of doing. They will soon realize the strengths, abilities and positives autistic people. I don't speak for one autistic person, I speak for every autistic warrior right round the world. It will take more than autism to stop us.
Correct. It's not about disability, it's about Ability. That's our saying at my work. I am high functioning Autism myself, have an MBA, and a success.

Also can I just say how relatable Lauren is in this? Like I have autism and the mood swings, miniature “panic” attacks, negative thinking & isolation are just some of the things that people, especially me, can relate to.
Finally someone points out that she broke into her home (twice). Gotta love that she also tracks her phone without her consent too :D

@@Hollygirl328 yeah Lauren can do anything. It doesn’t matter that she’s autistic.
And even if you're* Autistic.
Even the number ‘18’ itself screams responsibilities. The reason why Lauren was so disorganised in the first place was all her mums fault for not letting her do anything. Just because someone is autistic, doesn’t mean they should take any less responsibilities. Being a mother, she has an unwavering love for her kids.
My anger when the mum was bullying her daughter↗️↗️↗️😡I don’t like people who think people like Lauren our stupid when they are human too
I can’t believe her mom controlled her life like that.
I can't agree more than what you say.

Unfortunately, even your family members can be controlling, Isolate you,
Treat you like a child,
Doesn't let you have any freedom & independence,
Controls the purse strings,
I've got some of my own to add ,
Yep,
Controls who you associate with, & the kind of people to associate with,
Controls your hobbies, (eg sketching, like, dictate what kind of people you have in your artwork),
Controls what you buy,
(e.g. your family member or partner gets mad when you buy , say a 100th pair of shoes for example),
Checks your phone or emails,
Tells you what to eat, wear, & when to eat, wear, bathe, & sleep, & wake up,
With a toxic family member/partner , you're way better off without them.
All they do is make you miserable, & drag you down in to their toxic little world.
That's what Lauren's mom did to her in that storyline.
@@juliebrickley2562 straight truth.

I just can’t go back…
