Beef is the best writing ive seen from television in years. The way it gave every single character a moment of empathy was beautiful. The class struggle is there, but it doesnt fall into the trap of the underdog against thr evil rich.
Lee Sung Jin is a genius, beef was an absolute masterpiece and I can’t wait for what he does next. Reminds me of a young Tarantino with how he writes character dialogue.
@@bumbeach2590 Let's not get carried away now. Beef was an absolute masterpiece but He's got to stay consistent for a long time because getting put in the Tarantino category.
Holy Crap. I just tried to talk to my parents about my childhood trauma and beatings and they say they have no recollection or I'm making it worse than it is. It pissed me off because the memory has burned into my mind for 30 years.
I do feel like, since it's sad for them too, looking back at it, as an action (sometimes unnecessary) they performed out of anger, they tend to block it and since they were adults, it was easier for them to do so.
I binged this show this weekend and it was fucking amazing so many twists and turns I could never guess what was happening next and that was a surprise for me. Bravo next season let’s get dumbfoundead and Bobby lee in it lol
YES YES YES!!! 👏🏼 Thanks for having Sonny on as a guest. This episode was touching & inspiring. BEEF is above and beyond an amazing show. Loved every minute of it! I was legit praising during the church scenes. 🥲 Would love to see Steven Yeun and Ali wong on the pod as well! Hehe ❤🙌🏻
i was honestly hitting rock bottom (still kinda am lol) but i started watching beef cos i saw a short part on tiktok and thought it was a comedy show. finished it in one day and i’m still speechless about it… truly a work of art. ////: also a big shout out to steffie!!! 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷 i’m 4th gen japanese and born in brazil ahahahah i remember u talking a little bit about growing up here on uti :’) abraços, te achei maravilhosa 💕💕
Great episode and interview. It was interesting to hear the insight and back story to the show. I'm glad I just finished the show, so nothing was spoiled for me.
BEEF was without a doubt the best Netflix show I watched all year. The last thing that evoked such an emotional reaction in me was without a doubt, Arcane.
This Writer/Director believes that he is writing the “Asian experience”. But, every ethnic group I know has these exact same stories, particularly immigrants. I cannot emphasize enough how he captured the vulnerability of human beings in the most profound way. The script unfolds like a Nina Simone album. It’s beautiful. This movie/series was a historical masterpiece. Well done Sir. Well done
I was logging into Netflix when I saw the cover of BEEF on the homepage. I am a big Steven Yeun fan since his Walking Dead days so I was just going to watch the trailer before watching another show. That trailer led to me watching the 1st episode and I got a few episodes in before I realized how invested in the show I became. I was hooked. The story reminded me so much of this Argentine movie called 'Wild Tales', which shares that "karma is a b****" theme. And since the show is created by a Korean and the POV is through the lens of a Korean American, it felt pretty relatable to me coming from an immigrant background myself. 5 out of 5 stars. Can't wait for season 2.
that's so dope, a successful show on Netflix was inspired by talks on this podcast, and the design of this podcast was likely inspired and caught on by Bobby's podcast. Ah the Asian stories! Let's go!
I'm glad I've watched Judy Joo on Korean Food Made Simple before. A pleasant and well-educated Korean American celebrity chef who is very American but cherishes her heritage and introduces it to everyone in a positive light. So much angst and resentment against immigrant parents and Asian heritage among Asian American scripted shows now.
Awesome podcast. Great guest. What an intelligent and humble man. Positive vibes and a good representative for the Korean community. Steffie Baik's looking way too yummy 😋. Overall, a 10+ podcast 👊😠😡👊
So interesting! merci! Sorry you had violent childhood moments. Also a very cheerful episode 💖 Beef sounds like an amazing k-american drama :) Great feedback to the creator! Bravo culture makers for talking about life experiences and psychology: we need to keep mental health in the conversation.
I fkn loved BEEF. And I'm not Korean, however I do have a bunch if Korean friends. And the church and all that are definitely a common thing amongst them. This podcast was also hilarious, my first time listening, but will listen to more! Subscribed!
Specific? Not universal? I am a child of 80s from USSR and i can relate sooooooooooooooo much! Thanks for the show! It's something special! Made me think about me and mu kids and what they will tell their psychotherapist.
I feel like even though this was a show more focused on korean americans, as a south asian I found it really relatable. As much as I don't like to admit I really relate to Danny's character and his flawed personality.
As a Korean Korean fan of the show BEEF this was interesting and hilarious Also quite relatable as I now think about what being a Korean means a lot after starting to leave and work abroad.
Went to this nice hole in the wall Mexican place and I found a thick facial hair. I looked at it, looked at the chef cooking, looked back at the food...took out the hair, and continued to eat because that food was fire
@32:36 My Family in Western Kentucky also grew Hemp, as it was valuable to make Rope and other necessary items (especially during the War) And Indiana will Legalize a Decade AFTER Korea
he's on a lot of platforms already. sonny was able to provide us great insight as the creator, that the other cast members wouldn't have been able to answer.
I think Crazy Rich Asians absolutely paved the way (to some degree) for both Everything Everywhere and Beef. Funny enough, it went from old country story, to story about immigrant parents to “our” generation story and without having to be a “this is who we are” ethnicity definition story. Justin Lin said when he made Better Luck Tomorrow that he was sick having to justify Asian American faces on screen, that we live here so we can just be ourselves on screen without having to explain our existence. That was 2002. It’s almost like Beef is the modern realization of that kinda story. It’s funny that Sung thinks Parasite had more to pave the way for Beef since it’s a Korean movie in Korea. Vibe wise maybe it’s more similar to Beef and maybe Parasite also contributed to the normalization of Asian faces on screen more but it was CRA and EEAAO are Asian American stories and so is Beef (even though it’s a story to stand on its own).
I agree with the girl that Beef was unique and like it’s own genre and I get why the Koreans are feeling the Korean aspects to it but it’s also much deeper (or has more layers) than “K-American drama” ( I know Dumb is half joking there) but Ali’s mom I believe was revealed to be Vietnamese but her Dad was clearly born or raise in the US. Also George’s family is also multi-generationally American. His Japanese Mom also appeared to be American born. Funny that Ali’s real life (ex) husband was also (part) Japanese and had a famous/rich Dad too.
Great guest guys. I hope you can get some of the main cast on the show as well please. Also being on this subject of institutional abuse Paris Hilton would also make a great guest for you show.
The worship scene in church was awesome and authentic. I was so glad and appreciative that they didn't use it to dump on Christianity. Respect. The emotions you experience during praise and or prayer are you being in communion with Jesus and the holy spirit it's Not art like you said. It's when the anointing comes over you. Never ever heard someone call praise Art before. It's spiritual you just enter into that realm.
@@bobbowie9350 Interesting opinion. All the critics, audience on RT, IMDB, and every else disagree. But happy to hear more about a show you enjoy then if you think Beef was just average.
Lots of interesting stuff here! On the subject of therapy, a good enough therapist should be able to tell when a person is seeking approval and not reinforce that behavior by giving approval for appropriate responses. They should be able to help the person address that need and behavior and model healthy interactions through the therapeutic relationship instead. But with the bulk of therapists being petty awful, it's hard to find one that's really qualified and capable of this. They do exist though!
Goddamn BEEF is such a good show, and I'm so happy he's rewriting the Thunderbolts because I love the MCU and I know he's gonna make it fire, this was also such a good episode!
The most shocking scene is what happens to the Asian girl's rich boss. Brutal and shocking and how she didn't even try to help her get into the panic room...
The other shocker was this guy who just got out of jail. Fast talking Asian con man, vicious, filthy mouthed devil's advocate and again he was Asian blew my mind.
