Copper is a metal that "work hardens" meaning that as it is swaged, pressed, folded, stretched, extruded, etc, it becomes harder. Maybe the rifling squeezing on the bullet helped it maintain its shape, in addition to copper already being *much* harder and less malleable than lead.
Since Lehigh Defense makes their Extreme Penetrators in most sizes of handgun calibers how about comparing all handun calibers to see which of them will go through the bullet-proof glass vs stopped by the glass starting with .380 then 9mm, 357 mag, .44 mag., .45,acp and we saw the 10mm. This is great information for both sides of the glass. My guesses are: no to the .380acp and the .45acp but yes to the 9mm, 357mag., .44mag.
Love it! Please, if you can, can you repeat this test, but have ballistic gel behind the bulletproof glass? I would love to see the penetration that the XP bullet has "left" after going through the "Bullet Proof"glass. I'd love to see just how much power it has left, if any. The ballistic gel behind the glass would give me some indication.
I have a Glock 20 & 29. I've found that most 'off the shelf' 10mm ammo is loaded fairly close to .40 S&W spec. The 3 that I've been impressed with are HPR, Underwood and DoubleTap. Each of them get about 1250 fps from the G29 and 1300+ from the G20.
+Darrell McMillan i have a glock 29 with a 23 pound recoil spring and guild rod and a 6 in lonewolf barrel and i use the new extreme defender round and it works fine ,i use it in a glaco ankle glove for ccw it is my everyday carry gun
Thats the crappy thing about the 10mm. The "affordable" stuff is horribly underpowered, the good stuff is stupid expensive. 10mm is one of those rounds that should push you into reloading because you save a metric ton of money doing so.
Thank you! I had NO IDEA that was possible, that was like a laser beam. That bullet punched through that glass like paper absolutely amazing. I dont think I would want that bullet but the Extreme Defender is what my eyes are on...Like any tool the penetrator has its place I just dont think I need that tool...but WOW! it really is unstoppable.
Can you try two additional follow up test. 1. Since the bullet went through the glass using a Glock 40. Test the same bullet using the Glock 20 and 29 in 10mm as well. This should show if the additional velocity of the longer barrel made all the difference or if and when barrel length was a deciding factor. 2. Also try same brand of bullet in the other Glock MOS guns and their respective relatives. This should give more data to link to the first test as well as provide more supporting data across multiple areas.
+HeavyHitter5150 Quite frankly, no. You don't. On top of the fact that I have never ever seen an example of an innocent bystander hit by a bullet that passed completely through a bad guy (not a miss, that's a different scenario), the 10mm is so versatile you can choose loads from 135gr all the way up to 220gr. So with proper bullet selection over penetration is a non-issue, just like every other handgun.
***** That has to do with capacity and follow up shots, not over penetration lol. Go ahead, find one example of someone hitting a bad guy center of mass and the bullet passing all the way through and hurting someone else. I'll be waiting...
Obviously, a few boxes of that ammo is now on the list of things I really want. I found it unbelievable that the bullet looked like it could be reloaded. Thumbs up for the bullet design and production values.
Bikkus Dikkus Then they should ban hands too, or being too tall or muscular. Having any of those gives you "cop killing abilities." Just imagine a tall, muscular guy with two hands, a danger to the country itself XD.

Great video as usual. That is one hard hitting round. I like the frequent change in what you do. I am still partial to 22LR but like everyone else I shoot larger pistols and like to see you demonstrating it too. Thanks for sharing.
I'm amazed the Lehigh solid bullet kept its shape so well. Seems like it might over-penetrate a bit in a SD situation though, lol. I have some LehighSD ammo in 9mm but I may rethink carrying it now.
We have always used 44 and 357's hollow points with a sheet metal screw it for penetration tests. I was going to try a 10mm this spring.I to just picked up a Glock 40 gen 4. Love the videos
That's insane!!! Bullet didn't event shroom!!! Could reload it, shoot it at the glass, reload again and see how many times you can shoot the same bullet through it. Would have to make a bullet catching system though. Has he done a 500 s&w vs bulletproof glass?
10mm is my every day carry (Glock 29) and I absolutely love the power of this round. I’ve had a lot of pistols throughout the years and a good 10mm load is Prime!! This video was helpful
hey 22plinkster, if you have any of that glass left, I'd like to see you revisit the 357 magnum with the lehigh defense extreme penetrator round. I would like to see if 357 mag could make it through with the right bullet.
I wish I had seen this video when it first came out. I just watched this video and really enjoyed it, thanks! I was wondering how the use of the Liberty Civil Defense (60 gr., 2,400fps, 780fpe) round would compare with the Underwood Extreme Penetrator (140gr., 1500fps, 700fpe) using the Glock 20, 29 and 40. Do you think you could provide this bullet-proof glass test in an upcoming vid? Regards.
I am thinking since the regular 10mm fmj acted like a 9mm fmj, see if a 9mm leheigh penetrator will go through like the 10mm did. Also, since you have a 10mm, get yourself a 9x25 Dillon barrel. Smoking fast round.
Did you try the .357 Sig round in the extreme penetrator as well? If not you do not have an accurate sampling. As a matter of fact to have an accurate comparison you'd have to shoot each earlier tested cartridge in the underwood Ammo extreme penetrator as well.
+XxVeNoMxX Ballistics by the inch lists about a 100fps difference between a 4 inch barrel (g20) and a 6 inch barrel (G40) with buffalo bore 180 grain loads. This means about 200lb/f energy difference. Mind you I'm not arguing with more 10mm goodness.

One more step into confusion, the 40 is lovingly called the "10 mm short" sometimes :) When the FBI discovered it needed a milder round they cut down the case length. Everyone now owes me .02 cents
Completely EPIC, what other moderately conventional rounds could retain full bullet shape after passing through bullet proof glass! Amazing!!! Thanks for the video!!!!
I'd like to see 10mm hardcast tested too please (I've noticed several others mention this below). I carry a Glock 29 for woods defense, loaded with alternating underwood 220 grain hardcast and underwood 180 grain gold dot. I'm trying to determine if it'd be worth swapping out my hardcast for the leighhigh penetrator (seems counter intuitive 220gr vs 140gr). IF YOU CANNOT DO THIS TEST, GIVES US YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE POSSIBILITY OF A 220gr HARDCAST 10mm PENETRATING IT.
Great video! I have the Glock 40 and I was considering the 10mm extreme penetrator or the Corbon 180 grain bonded core soft point for black bear defense loads. Your video shows the extreme penetrator load will have more than adequate penetration. A 40 caliber hole is better than a 357 size hole.
One will probably fire more than one round at a bear, especially if it is charging. So, that is why my bear mags are loaded with alternating Underwood SKU 242 (220gr HC) and SKU 648 XP.
Great video as always. That was close range at the glass and would be interesting to see what maximum range is on fully penetrating the bullet proof glass just for statistics
interesting that the UW load penetrd with only about half of the power of an AK-47 round. Which is the go-to round for this kind of thing. I think it shows the performance of this bullet design in combination with the cartridge weight/speed and caliber. And that's why the 10mm is admired. The other round was the equivalent of the .40 s&w, which ain't shabby by any means...I'd like to see the stock Lehigh Def round which is 1200fps, fired at the panel. To see how the bullet design aides penetration of this barrier......Nice test.
10mm is where its at.Unfortunately it's hard to find off the shelf ammo 10mm that actually uses 10mm load specs.Underwood is close, but still a little short.10mm was designed to run a 50,000 psi chamber pressure
I don't know if you've done it or not, but I'd like to see you try the Liberty Ammunition Civil Defense. It comes in every popular handgun caliber, so pick your favorite. I would like to see the 9mm treated though.
I'm amazed at how undeformed the bullet is more than anything else. For some reason, Underwood seems to advertise this type of ammo as both "Extreme Penetrating" and "Extreme Defender". I couldn't imagine using something like this as defense ammo, all I can think about is over penetration, but it would be damn fun to shoot.
Over penetration like come on its rare enough that you'll even need it it would be more rare that someone will catch a stray behind the bad guy. Maybe in an apartment wouldn't be my first choice but yea chances are astronomical you'll hit a bad guy and an innocent person at the same time. Most people can't even hit the target they spray and pray them the people that may hit someone else by accident. Definitely more of self defense in the wilderness tho lol
I've had my Glock 40 since the day it came out. Still waiting for the small plate that you need to put under the battery compartment in order to mount the Trijicon RMR07. Why Trijicon doesn't ship these with their $600 optics is beyond me.The G40 is a ton of fun to shoot, but it is massive even compared to my G20. Love the Xtreme Penetrators, so much WIN!
Wow, didn't even deform the bullet in any obvious way! Least it didn't look like it. I was guessing it would have deformed the + shape flats a little bit. Pretty impressive! Gotta love solid copper bullets! I would like to see this same test, same bullet but in the other calibers of Underwood's XP loadings!
Great video. Wonder how it does ( the Leigh hi stuff) as far as expansion and soft tissue destruction. That, would help really cement this rounds place as top carry/defense round.
Any idea what these slugs are made out of? Didn't look to be any deformation. That brings up another question, if it's super hard, what's it doing to the barrel?
All that force and it still didn't deform. That's one badass bullet.
Copper is a metal that "work hardens" meaning that as it is swaged, pressed, folded, stretched, extruded, etc, it becomes harder. Maybe the rifling squeezing on the bullet helped it maintain its shape, in addition to copper already being *much* harder and less malleable than lead.

No doubt it will penetrate but what about the terminal damage
One will probably fire more than one round at a bear, especially if it is charging. So, that is why my bear mags are loaded with alternating Underwood SKU 242 (220gr HC) and SKU 648 XP.
Anytime I see Glock 40, I feel like I've seen the love of my life. I love that gun soo much.
Great video as always. That was close range at the glass and would be interesting to see what maximum range is on fully penetrating the bullet proof glass just for statistics
Have you tried the 9mm Underwood Extreme Penetrator? Would love to see how it does against the glass.
Should try the 38 special +p XP...
interesting that the UW load penetrd with only about half of the power of an AK-47 round.
Jacob Ishii reload...
I carry the Underwood 357 Sig Xtreme Penetrator. I would love to see the same test with that
Awesome video, keep up tha great work 👍🏽 1 Million Subscribers right around tha corner 🎉
Nice vid! I'd like to see how that 10mm Lehigh round does on AR500 steel.
I don't know if you've done it or not, but I'd like to see you try the Liberty Ammunition Civil Defense. It comes in every popular handgun caliber, so pick your favorite. I would like to see the 9mm treated though.
That is some awesome stuff. Wonder what that would do loaded in a 40 S&W?
I'm curious how a buffalo bore hard cast 10mm round would do in bullet proof glass. Great video! Love my Glock 20
I would like to know how a hard cast bullet would perform. Thanks for the video
if you put that round in a hand carbine with a 16 inch barrel i wonder what you could hunt with it
Great video! I'd love to know if an Underwood Xtreme Penetrator in .357 Sig would go through bullet proof glass.
Great video! Next time you should put some ballistics gel behind the glass.
Could you try shooting that bulletproof glass with Underwood 357 magnum extreme penetrator
As I recall, the Xtreme Pentrators are all pure copper, CNC machined from bar stock.
+Safton +1 correct. not cheap to make.
