How to apply Stiffener to Silk

  • If you make silk or fabric flowers, there are several methods to apply PVA stiffener. I prefer this one:
Make a mixture of 100ml (3.381402us fl oz) of water plus 1 tablespoon of good quality wood glue. Add two tablespoons of the PVA stiffener, mix well. By hand squeeze the excess of stiffener and gently wring it.
After applying the stiffener carefully put it on the clothes line in a single layer, avoiding direct sun light. Iron it on a low temperature when it is dry. If you are not going to use it straight away, roll it into a cylinder shape.
You should cut the parts of your flower only on the bias. To save time, staple 4 layers of silk together
and trace the pattern only on the top one. When you cut the petals, make sure that you cut inside
of the pencil line .For leaves and calyx cut out around the patterns and don’t cut the details yet.
You can buy PVA powder and make this excellent stiffener on my site www.galelina.com.au

Hello! Thank you for your video! Two questions:
1- do you iron the treated fabric before cutting the petals?
2- I’ve read somewhere that you live in Australia. I am currently living in New Zealand. Do you know if there is anyone that teaches how to make silk flowers in person here in Auckland? I like TH-cam classes, but I would love to do it in person.

No, really, you have to apply the stiffener to vet the same way as we apply to leather.

Hello! Thank you for this video! I'm wondering if we can just use the PVA solution and not mix it with the other wood glue? Or?
    Thanks!

Yes, you can but silk will be more "crisp" and it will be more difficult to shape it with flower making tools

I want to make cotton velvet flowers for an upcoming sewing project. What would you recommend I use to stiffen the cotton velvet/velveteen? Thank you in advance.

Sorry that I missed your question. Now I am fond of making flowers from linen, cheese cloth, hessian and other sustainable materials and I use exactly the same stiffiner ans it works well !

Wonderful but take care of yourself too not of the art
... use gloves as all these chemicals will not only ruin your nice manicure but will be absorbed by your skin into every cell of your body.
