I have all the Dawes albums and all the Isbell albums. Isbell was better back when he was on drugs and sobering up. His newer stuff is really lacking. Taylor is kinda hit or miss. This song is really good. About half his stuff is really good. The other half is so so. Haven't heard an album from Dawes that is great from front to back.
A year later, I still think he's one of the best of the decade, but the second half is a little much. Top 30% of songwriters ever is fairly reasonable I think.
Between Taylor Goldsmith and Jason Isbell there isn't much else the songwriting world can do but sit back and marvel at the genius these two men conjure up.
Gotta say I love that tune. Adam played that back around 2007 at Red Rocks. Just him alone. It was when he was really heavy too and I just thought "This is amazing and he's going to be dead by this time next year." Thankfully he started getting healthier. Anyway... Black and Blue, great tune.
Him and Jason Isbell are going to be remembered as THE songwriters of this generation. Mark my words.

Taylor Goldsmith is in the top three songwriters of the decade and towards the top of the list of all-time greats.
Amen
YES YES YES
Kiddo, you reeealllly need to listen to a LOT more songwriters.

I need the other two!

Yes!! I so adore them both! 💖💖
And Joe Henry 😊
Artistry at its absolute finest. Truly a legendary performer who would've taken over the world back in the golden age of folk rock.
One of the greatest vocal performances I've ever heard. And he makes it seem effortless. I can't even comprehend how he does it.
What a beautiful song....incredible..
Finally it's back!!!! Best thing ever.
Outstanding...beautiful! Thanks Taylor!!
I haven't cried over a song since probably early y2k (Counting Crows' "Black and Blue"). I gotta hand it to you, Dawes. Can't keep these tears back!

Black and blue is a beautiful tune as well
I'm seeing Dawes live next week. And Langhorne Slim is opening. Dream come true.
Slim, you've got the coolest friends and this page is probably the best hidden gem on TH-cam. Can't wait for more uploads.
brilliant
Wow.
Currently my favorite tune. Taylor nails this performance. Is it just me or do these lyrics envoke shades of Dylan?
So true, it's got that stream-of-consciousness lyrical thing going on.
I think it's more like Paul Simon, especially the "There's nothing sadder than a streetlight..." verse. It reminds me of Train in the Distance.
Three years later and this is still my favorite version to listen to/cover.
Just heard this for the first tme today.....
I much prefer this version to the album version. I like how it's a bit faster.
Beautiful. Somehow the album version is more heartbreaking
W
someone can say me which is the tuning of the guitar ?
Izhan I believe it’s just drop D sir
Capo on fourth fret that's it. No drop D
