My all-time favorite Rooney film...he trashed Quicksand in his autobiography since it didn't do anything to revive his career which was in the doldrums at the time. And he had trouble with the producer compensation-wise.

I can definitely see why he "Trashed" this movie. He was always to "animated" in every role he's played, in my opinion. He was viewed in Hollywood more like the "Jester" he was never to be taken serious in Hollywood. He was all over the place, "ADHD" He was very unbelievable in this role. Mickey Rooney the lover? The stick-up man? The Murder? Nawww, he could never pull it off, in my opinion. His best roles he played to me was the ones he played with "Judy Garland". In my opinion. This exposed his "Napoleon Complex" Just look at the name they tagged on him. "Mickey Rooney" like "Mickey Mouse" he knows that he was their "Muse" they laughed at Mickey in Hollywood. He knew that.

@@antoniarivers7636 He was given uppers and downers during his early career. He was a heavy gambler and he was bipolar, probably drug induced. You have no idea what you are talking about. He was respected by his colleagues. Go read a book. I doubt whether Ava Gardner or Elizabeth Taylor would date you.

I have no doubt that he just a like "Judy Garland" and most child stars was abused in the hell's of Hollywood as well. I was merely stating my "opinion" on how "I" viewed Mickey Rooney. I have never been able to take him seriously in so-called strong roles.

johnhardman3 Studios didn't pay much. They got actors tied up in contracts that made them virtual slaves. The studio owners had complete control over their lives.
It was sad that Barbara Bates who played Helen only lived to 43 years old. She committed suicide in 1967. She didn't make much money either. Near her end she worked as a secretary and hospital aide. It's sad how the non-talented rich use wonderful people like Barbara. She was in at least 31 movies but ended up having to work menial jobs.
Barbara was also a pin up girl during WWII. She was so beautiful.

Mickey Rooney was a heavy gambler. On top of that, later in his life, he was verbally and physically abused by his eighth wife Jan and was also abused and financially exploited by his stepson Chris and his wife Christina with Jan protecting them. Those around him are demons, that's why he died in such a tragic way.

@thatzim wtf I think he had trouble with his producers at the time. Also, his career had gone from being a child actor/young teen actor to something less at that point in his life. He got typecast as the Andy Hardy character. He was considered too short to be a leading man, too old to play a teen, and he wasn't in demand. All of that put together probably did a number on his mind. (Just a guess, though).

Quicksand is an effectively frightening film. This ordinary Joe flips his wig with terrifying ease. The film is a fascinating study of delusion and denial, the sorry consequences of lust and greed. Peter Lorre is creepy as Nick, Vera's former employer. Vera, Jeanne Cagney (James Cagney's sister) is effective as Rooney's love interest. Danny is doll dizzy and he needs the lettuce to date Vera. Danny finds his life spiraling out of control. Quicksand is killer-diller, see it!

Rooney was a great actor, comedian, dancer and all round performer. According to this article on Wikipedia, Laurence Olivier said that Mickey Rooney was “the best there ever has been”. I loved him in the Andy Hardy movies, in National Velvet and in many others. His performance in The Human Comedy (about the homefront in WW2 ) was outstanding. It was reportedly Louis B Mayer’s favourite movie.

As for Mickey Rooney, I think he was excellent in dramas like Requiem for a Heavyweight and The Comedian. The only time he wasn't convincing is when he tried to be tough.
