Watching Mickey Rooney's character slide down the rabbit hole with each passing mistake was nerve-racking. Good movie with excellent acting in all areas. Also, good quality film for1950.
This was unexpected...Mickey Rooney in a nice film noir role. He proves he can pull it off as you watch his poor decisions mount with pity. It's those choices starting with his ditching a pretty and upright girl for a fast floosey. It's like he's getting in deeper by the moment ditching his sense of right. Will he pull himself out of the dead-end path or lose everything? He makes you have to watch because it could go either way. Good tense story.
Great movie. The traps people get themselves into due to their own stupidity and greed - it makes them go down a dangerous life entrapment rabbit hole - classic.
A very well written suspenseful movie starring the great Mickey Rooney !!! he was a tiny man but somehow he had star quality and he lit up the screen. I love old movies with the stars of yesteryear. Again a great film.

This is classic Film Noir. Danny (Mickey Rooney) is a bad boy, falls for the conniving blonde when he should have stuck with the much better looking brunette who actually saw something in him (I don't know what, he is kind of a loser). And of course, Peter Lorre at his slimeball best . Plus as someone (me) who has quit smoking over 30 years ago, I felt like I smoked a whole pack of cigarettes watching this film, which felt great. This is a classic. About 1 hour 20 minutes. Well worth it.
An enjoyable film from 1950s, one initial bad decision sets in motion the whole chain of events. The sweet-natured spurned girlfriend is a beautiful actress, Barbara Bates, who was only 43 when she died in 1969. She took her own life, having suffered from severe depression for many years, and this had also ended her acting career, a sad story indeed. Enjoyed Peter Lorre's cameo too.
Mickey Rooney shines in this morality play that can be described either as dumb or mechanical and resourceful. As expected, Peter Lorre is good in the role of a small-time gangster.
Superb! Doesn’t matter how improbable the storyline, how obvious the outcomes, how stupidly the characters behave, the measure of a good thriller like this is that the viewer takes it all in, hook, line and sinker, right up to the obvious ending. And I’m only halfway through still!

This was a great film noir - most all of the film noir back in the '40's and '50's were wonderful. When the 1960's came around, for some reason really good movies like this went by the wayside. Thank you, CCC!! 😊
Terrific to see Mickey Rooney in this type of noirish film, he pulls it off, totally believable. The two female leads were convincingly the direct opposite of each other, all the cast were perfect. My only complaint is Peter Lorre had very little to do, he is so memorable in every movie he’s in. I was racking my brains as to how I know the actor who plays the lawyer in the car at the end - Taylor Holmes. He’s Mr Edmond Sr in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes who’s in that hilarious scene where he accuses Marilyn Monroe: do you deny you intend to marry my son for his money? and she replies: no, I intend to marry him for YOUR money! That was yet to come when he appeared in this.
He was also really good in a couple of other noirs. Drive a Crooked Mile and The Strip come to mind. Also, he did fine work in Requim for a Heavyweight and Baby Face Nelson. Rooney definitely had dramatic acting chops.
I’m surprised at no comment on the brief appearance of Jack Elam at the bar before Mickey followed him out. So many nifty old cars from back in the day Good flick
I’m sure he was just breaking into the movies and relatively unknown at that time he wasn’t shown in the credits either just a young inspiring actor. Lol
And no mention here of the appearance of Jimmy Dodd in the opening scenes. He spent years as the (super-familiar) host of Disney's Micky Mouse Club daily tv show. A whole generation grew up with him.
Blonde bird? How old are you 198? Nobody in the past 70 yrs calls women birds. I’m surprised you even know how to open an app like TH-cam to watch this old movie. Or did your great great great great great granddaughter put this on for you. Bird....lol
Great movie... life turned upside down because he had to have that $20 to take Vera out... downward spiral from there! So I’m assuming Vera went to jail as an accessory to the theft? They didn’t really elaborate. Mickey Rooney was great as always😊
LOL, I remember watching this as a kid. I kept waiting for the scene with the quicksand, lol, before I began to see the underlying meaning. I remember him hitting a guy, a love interest and that his situation grew more and more desperate. Now i'll watch it again, without anticipating any quicksand.

Attempted murder, breaking and entering, assault and battery, grand larceny - all felonies, yet no choke hold, no knee to the throat, no billy club and no hand cuffs. Don't miss Drive a Crooked Road, from about 4 years later. Mickey was a phenomenal actor. Some who know their stuff say he was one of the very best, maybe the best. For sheer screen power, I think Cagney takes the cake, but Mickey is right up there, and he may have had more versatility than any of 'em.

This was such an entertaining film. I just discovered that, according to information on IMDb, Mickey Rooney actually co-financed "Quicksand" with Peter Lorre, which is interesting. Having Peter Lorre in just about anything makes it worth watching to begin with for me, and Mickey Rooney was enough of a sympathetic character to keep my attention invested in the story. I suspect that many guys can relate to the domino effect of one financial mishap after the other - as I've personally been, recently, as well, though I haven't had to resort to anything like Rooney's character did. Perhaps, that's what compelled me, subliminally, to look up this particular film online at two o'clock in the morning - which was perfect to watch with eggs over medium, toast and a cup of tea. It was definitely great story for this time of night (or, morning), overall. By the way, if anyone else watched this film with Closed Captioning (or, tried to), you most likely noticed the inaccuracies in the phrasing, which were so bad at times that they were funny. I had to turn them off to maintain any semblance of continuity at one point. As for my first time in seeing "Quicksand," it was on TCM, many years ago. Thankfully, I found that it was included on a Film Noir DVD collection which I later purchased, though the film quality was quite weathered. Regardless of the scratches and such (which gave it a vintage character) it was still watchable. Another film that I can recommend, in relation to this one, though they're both individualized productions, is called "Detour." I'm rather certain that it's on TH-cam somewhere. My original copy of it, also included on the aforementioned Film Noir Collection, was quite damaged, though it has since been restored through Criterion, which I purchased last year. Anyway, thanks for reading this comment, and long live the art of Film Noir. :)
Quicksand is a very apt title for this film, Micky Rooney's character borrows $20 dollars from the cash register, then his original attempt to return it just sends him spiralling deeper and deeper into the abyss. 😂😂
Me also! I have a huge collection of films from the early 30s until the late 50s.... I keep finding ones on TH-cam I’ve never seen before! Guess I need to collect more 🌷
Mickey Rooney in this movie showed me that he did have acting talent great choice by hm fourth time I’m watching this Lorre is his creepy slime character that he was a genius at

Never seen a movie with Mickey Rooney in it that was lousy. Another gem from the 1950s. Recommended: Requiem For A Heavyweight. 1950something. Anthony Quinn. Mickey Rooney. Jackie Gleason. You just can't beat these movies from the 1950s. Far better than most of the modern claptrap.
A friend who used to work in the film industry in the 90s told me about a time on set. After a take, one of the other camera operators came up to him and said, "Nice Mickey Rooney". Maureen O'Hara was the main actress in the scene and heard this. She came over and said that in all the years in the industry, she had never heard that term. Then asked what it meant. My friend was slightly embarrassed then admitted it described how the camera slowly moved closer to the actors while keeping everything in focus. Maureen was a bit confused, then my friend said, "you know, a slow creep".
Always loved MR in movies especially with Judy Garland. Oh...I guess $20 went a long way in those days but it got him into a lot of trouble for nothing.
But this was 1950. Back then driving infractions we're cries, in criminal court. I forget what year they decriminalized driving violations here in Mass. It was clogging the court.
@@aspenrebel Yes, that's true. One thing that a lot of people don't know is that a law isn't law the way it is written, it's law the way it is interpreted by the courts. If the District Attorney considers it a civil matter, as in Texas, they won't prosecute no matter how the law was written.
@@robertansley6331 well a district atty pretty much has absolute power and discretion in determining whether or not to prosecute a criminal case, go to trial. A judge, police, a politician, the Governor can't tell or order a DA to prosecute a particular crime on the books or a particular person. In theory, at least, but of course in the "buddy buddy" system and the corruption that exists, a DA will most often simply do what such authorities "ask" him to do. Or what the organized crime head in the area tells him to do. In Boston area just think Whitey Bulger or Mafia. Several years ago, Boston (Suffolk County) got a new DA, a Democrat black women. Right away she announced that she wasn't going to prosecute a couple of certain crimes on the books (I forget what exactly). In rare occasions the State Atty General my take over if a DA refuses to prosecute. One time, Middlesex County (think Cambridge) DA refused to prosecute the corrupt and criminal M'sex Cty Sheriff. The Atty General took over. I think Sheriff was found guilty or deal made and he plead out I think he was Irish, Mc something.
@@robertansley6331 A DA's only consideration is to get re-elected or move up. Also not to get removed or arrested. Such as he refused to prosecute cuz the Mob is paying him not to.

I’m gonna watch when I get a chance. I am only 36 but into old films.
This movie is nothing but one big anxiety attack!! 😮😮 Why in the world do I watch it?!? My life doesn't have enough anxiety already?!?😢
@mickeyray3793 Typical...! Cheers!
Really? Sorry you feel that way. I thought this was a silly little entertainment.
Quicksand is a very apt title for this film, Micky Rooney's character borrows $20 dollars from the cash register, then his original attempt to return it just sends him spiralling deeper and deeper into the abyss. 😂😂
All he has to do was wait until he got paid!
What a role, I'm wild for Mickey Rooney. Luckily this was my first time catching this flick ,that's a rarity for me being an old movie buff.
Me also!
I have a huge collection of films from the early 30s until the late 50s.... I keep finding ones on TH-cam I’ve never seen before!
Guess I need to collect more 🌷
Excellent movie and excellent video quality. Thanks a lot.
QUICKSAND...WOW!!!
Excellent everything and just so well done.
Never step into the scary stuff...
Love 💘 😻 💜 💛 💚 🧡 it, Thank You!!!
Mickey Rooney in this movie showed me that he did have acting talent great choice by hm fourth time I’m watching this Lorre is his creepy slime character that he was a genius at
Muy buena película, no la había visto. Me encantan los clásicos. Cómo siempre excelente actuación del gran actor Mickey Rooney. Desde Argentina gracias por subirla.
one of the best movies on the planet
Saw Mickey with Ann Miller in Sugar Babies - live on Broadway in ‘77. Both brilliant!
Thank you fit sharing this old movie
It’s always so odd seeing Mickey Rooney as a love interest! Nothing good looking about him , he was a good actor though 🌷
And he was married to Ava Gardner. He must have something ,
@@sharonmehaffey5539 SHE must have needed glasses (either that or she was wearing 40/20 lenses)
@@sharonmehaffey5539 Ava used Rooney as a come up. She was barely 19 yrs old. And who wouldn't marry a rich top box office mega celebrity while being young and trying to get your own foot in the door?
Another Great Classic film by Mickey Rooney
Love how he mugs someone and cops are instantly there.
My favorite Rooney film. I had it on DVD from an AMC collection 💶⌚
Good movie!! Seen it twice already!!💕
Thank you for this, a well done really enjoyable movie 🙂... Kind regards fr 🇨🇦
Talk about digging a hole. Helen is a dope talk about needy.
Mickey Rooney was an amazing Actor who sadly was subjected to elderly abuse in his last years.
He was touring on stage in England some 15 years ago, in his eighties.
@@None-zc5vg He appeared before the United States Congress to offer his insights on the elderly abuse he had been subjected to in his later years.
Amazing story told by Mickey Rooney when he was quite frail. Louis B. Mayer would have been proud.
From petty theft to grand theft to (possible) murder😲...talk about one spinning out of control in record time🙃
Desperation's dastardly deeds😕....Thx for upload; enjoyable film😉...✌❤🕯
Great movie thanks for posting
Never seen a movie with Mickey Rooney in it that was lousy. Another gem from the 1950s. Recommended: Requiem For A Heavyweight. 1950something. Anthony Quinn. Mickey Rooney. Jackie Gleason. You just can't beat these movies from the 1950s. Far better than most of the modern claptrap.
I think that was 1962
A friend who used to work in the film industry in the 90s told me about a time on set.
Those $50 bills are $625 in today's money. And $3610 is over 47k now!
This guy sure knows how to get into trouble. The dame was the start of it all
Great movie, always good to see Peter Lorre.
Always loved MR in movies especially with Judy Garland. Oh...I guess $20 went a long way in those days but it got him into a lot of trouble for nothing.
$220 in today's money
Great movie. In Texas the watch would have simply been a civil matter. Can’t get time pawning a timepiece bought on time....anytime
@@robertansley6331 oh I think one thing that new Suffolk Cty DA refused to prosecute was Shoplifting, from stores. Maybe under a certain $$ amount or all together (not including armed robbery of a store by gun, knife, club, or other). Not sure the result.
Jeanne Cagney was the sister of James Cagney
Jack Elam as guy at bar - 25.28+
Ray Teal as one of the motorcycle cops
Vechi film, dar bun .Merita sa fie vizionat.
Mickey Rooney was really, a great actor.
Makes the thankful for the blessings of a quiet obedient life. 😊😉
