    I am almost 61...and started a year and a half ago. Did not know what I was doing at first. So Field Work is the key!! Back in June a couple came to visit me for a day and we went to a local course. and the guy's girlfriend would always do the standstill throw like you are doing. She was throwing nearly 300 feet from ma standstill position. I was in awe Lol's one drill I work on to throw straight and flat is found a spot on a school grounds that has a double row of trees about 12-15 ft. apart with low hanging branches. I stand at one end, and have to keep my disc underneath that low ceiling ( 6-8 foot ceiling) and that has helped me immensely. It solved my problem of releasing nose up

      Love the feed back I’ll have to find a spot like that to work on nose angle, I’m getting better but still release nose up at times, it’s a common mistake of mine. Thanks once again thanks for feedback, I love hearing what others have done to get better, it only makes us all better golfers

      @@DiscManiac28 you are welcome. we all need help in some way. I am probably the ONLY disc golfer in America though that always wears "gloves" when I throw. Lol's people look at me weird Lol's some kids last Friday at the course were asking me; "...you throw with gloves all the time..."?? I found a nice pair of gloves at a Big Box store ( Menards) that have a polypropolene palm that totally solved the problem of having a disc slip out of my hand. I watch the pro's constantly trying to dry their hands / fingers to avoid a "slip"...and I never have to worry about that. The first very cold October morning I tried them out, I realized after the first throw, that I threw just as well if not better than with my bare hand. Lol's.

    I did a similar thing to this just yesterday and had a very similar result. Threw similar distance drives at a stand still just by focusing on my footing, the weight transfer, and my timing. It's easy to get ahead of yourself, especially as a beginner like myself, trying to do the runup or the x-step and not focusing on the fundamentals and the actual physics behind what makes the disc go far.

    I have been in awe of Niklaus Antilla's backhand form lately, I love the way that guy plays! I try to copy what he does at least lately. yesterday tried to start throwing rollers. being 61 yrs old I don't have the power all the young whipper snappers have, so to try and break that 300 foot obstacle, I think I can learn to throw rollers this summer.???

    All great points.. the hard part is getting my body to do the things I want it to do.. and not just one time, but consistently.
    I played baseball up through high school then slow pitch softball after that and so I think I have a lot of muscle memory to overcome.
    I’ve gained about 50-60 ft over the past year working on grip and timing, but my longest throws happen at times and I have no idea why. I think between this and keeping the nose down, if I can overcome those issues I’ll go from 380ish for golf lines to 450. Is that quite a jump? Yes. But I’ve thrown 450 a couple times and once I hit 467. So I appreciate the pointers. Great video man.

    • @DiscManiac28
      @DiscManiac28  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I totally get it, I played high school football and then college football so I know I’m decently athletic but it was hard getting my body to move the way I wanted it to. Lots of little adjustments. 380 to 450 is a jump but it’s not near as much of one as most people think. I feel like I’m right on the brink of hitting 500ft. If you have hit 467 then you know it’s 100% something you can accomplish and once you get all timing worked out won’t be no biggie

    Great video. I’ve been practicing standing still to find the perfect power pocket, snap and release. Just like your video. That’s what needs to be mastered. The run up and x step will help you throw it farther, but it’s useless until you get the snap and release mastered. Follow through becomes natural if it’s released properly. I found what helped me was to have a FIRM grip on the disc. About 75% of your full grip power on the disc. When it rips out of your hand you hear the snap and it spins way more. My wrist is also slightly cocked, nose of the disc ever so slightly down. Everyone has their own way of doing some things differently, but that power pocket, snap and release is truly the key for distance.

    Ya bud! I’m gonna practice it! It’s super important shot real well this morning, putting was locked. But also watch Drew Gibson video on power I forget which but there is one where he describes your hips and shoulders at the point of brace trying to bust through a door on a hinge. I did that immediately and it helped with the snap and pull through. Also the slingshot guy on his back foot load up imagining pushing backward right before you step into your brace. Mastering that balance can improve your consistency in your power which ultimately not every shot will be perfect but getting snap consistently is going to lower your score so these tips like your tip off arm timing, brace leg shoulder door bust down, and slingshot x step back foot lag weight back all make the difference once a few practice sessions. I’m going to take your advice and mess with my reach back at different angles. I still need to get that honed in.

    Engaging your off hand/arm forward and downward after your body rotation occurs that brings your throwing arm back; creates more stretch in the throwing arm side of your body that engages your throwing arm to go forward and if you allow your throwing arm to be loose enough the shoulder then elbow then forearm and then your hand will sling foward because of that counter tension created from the opposite directions of both arms at the point of body rotated with throwing arm back and off arm moved foward down and close to the body.

    I needed to comment this. SNAP is the most misunderstood word in disc golf. It has nothing to do with sound. Snap is the last "powerful" movement of the wrist (even fingers) when the disc leaves from your hand. Like the end of the whip. If I remember correct, word SNAP is from Blake Takkunen who was teaching disc golf somewhere in early 2000s. It is not a good word, because it is always mixed with the sound. Still really good video and really good tips! Standstill is the way to go.

    Good video. Off arm seems to do more for timing and core stiffness than it does for the ballerina effect. The throw includes a spin but the spin happens only at the end and everything else is forward momentum into the brace. You would lose some from letting your off arm hang straight out but having it down vs tucked vs punched is not really different. I found that if you start your off arm tuck at the same time as the brace then your arm is fully tucked by the time you’re in the power pocket and the squeezing of core muscles during this move helps your brace.

    • @b-radg916
      @b-radg916 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve heard (and believe) that with proper timing, bringing your off arm down and tight pulls your back shoulder in, which forces the front shoulder to open, increasing the speed of the pull.

    If your fingers are making noise when the disc leaves your hand, you're likely holding the disc far too tightly. It is NOT an indicator of anything other than that. Does every person that throws far have an audible sound coming from their fingers when throwing? No...

    • @DiscManiac28

      Your right there are several pros that throw very far and the isn’t really any noise, but Drew Gibson, Eagle McMahon, Aaron Gossage, Paul Ulibarri are just some that I can think of off the top of my head that have that audible sound when they throw, As for me when I hear that and feel it come out of my hand it’s 99% of the time a higher velocity with more spin throw.

    I think you wanna keep the off hand moving to the same direction as your body in general. Don't "hit" it down like you did it in this video, it's energy wasted to wrong direction. Just bring it naturally close to your body. Maybe it was exaggerated for demonstration purposes but if you look at the pros, the movement is smooth and natural. Think you could turn your head and torso more backwards prior to throwing, although it might be difficult when throwing stationary and I don't know how flexible you're (we're all different!). And just like in ball golf, you should not follow the disc with your eyes once it leaves your hand, instead let your head and body go to the direction of the momentum. Otherwise you'll slow down the rotation. Audience will tell you it was a great shot!

    • @McSlobo
      @McSlobo ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually, I'd say, concentrate more on how you "load energy" to the off hand before throwing than bringing it close to body. Your body is a spring that stores energy when twisted and the off-hand is the twisting lever. And throwing is more about torso muscles. Perhaps check some videos of pros throwing stationary. Usually when throwing while running the "loading" is rather natural and once loaded the energy comes out rather naturally, but again, we're different. What works for somebody else doesn't necessary work for you, or me. It depends on individual core muscles and the only way to train them is using them (smartly).

    • @DiscManiac28
      @DiscManiac28  ปีที่แล้ว

    in the 1st throw you have a solid brace and thats one of the most important things from a drive. You also talked about how you normally throw on a hyzer and want to throw flat. You want to throw on a hyzer tilt. Most coaches all agree.

    Another good takeaway from those pro clips is staying on your toes during the run up! That probably helps generate alot of snap once you pivot into the throw and transfer your weight to the heel of your brace leg.

      Great point, I didn’t mention that but is very true, thanks for feedback

    I have come back to this video multiple times over the past month to share with my friends in hope they will benefit in the way I did from it.
    I started playing this year in late June and instantly got the bug, I had over 60 rounds by the end of August alone and was constantly struggling with my backhand and the tips in this video after some field work helped me tremendously.
    I was able to go from a very inconsistent and uncomfortable 200ft x step backhand and am now throwing close to 350ft drives stand still(max distance is 355ft in a field) I was struggling a bit with the reach back location until you uploaded the spin video last week and my gosh the combination of the 2 videos has helped my long game and approach game soo much its been a complete game changer.
    I came back to comment and say thank you as I was really starting to get down on myself not seeing the improvements I wanted until I watched your videos.
    Much love❤

      I came back to add something to this because I forgot to in my original comment, but the week I watched this video I went out and practiced it the first round I played after I got my very first ace at 224ft and then a week after that I hit my second ace at 214ft both with the buzzz which has become one of my favourite discs for straight lines

      Dude, that is so awesome to hear, it makes me so happy to hear about people overcoming their struggles in the game, and yours is a great story, I couldn’t be more happy for ya. I appreciate all compliments and the feedback. It really is so cool to me that you have improved that much in such little time:) keep up the good work

    Snap is not an indication of a good throw.
    There are tons of bomber throwers who dont have any snap sound.

      I know as for me, when I hear the snap and feel it I can tell it’s a better longer throw

      @DiscManiac28 it generally means youre gripping the disc better. Which is a good thing.

    Awesome. I'm 67 and just started playing July 4th of this year. I twisted my right knee trying to throw a backhand like I'm a 25 yr old pro. Since then (3weeksago) I've thrown nothing but 4hands. Because of that my 4hand is getting pretty accurate. However, some shots have to be made using a backhand (long dogleg left). So now that my knee is almost back to normal, I need to try what you suggest before I use a backhand on the course.
    I used to play a lot of competitive tennis and thought I had a pretty good 1-handed backhand. However, I've struggled with the discgolf backhand. So thanks for the tips. I'll let you know how it turns out.

    This video gave me a realization on why watching videos and even taking advice is difficult. Everything teaches you how to do things "correct," then you have to figure where to create your lag. So you have to learn how to do things "correct," then you have to learn to do them correctly wrong lol. This is why lag can be a difficult concept

      Its definitely a hard concept for sure. It took me getting out and throwing a lot to find out what works for me and I’m still not 100% there. Lol

    Terrific explanation and breakdown of this mechanic with some "real world" examples that help it make sense.

    I went to stand still and worked on similar motions and generated not only more distance but more accuracy.

      That’s great, I do this drill still to this day cause it seems to still help with both. I was surprised the first time I started doing this. Great drill

    The one thing I notice here is you are pulling diagonally throwing behind yourself. You want to bring the disc in and release around 10 o clock. The zone throw was the proper release

    • @DiscManiac28
      @DiscManiac28  ปีที่แล้ว

      It felt better for sure, I wasn’t paying to much attention to that part of throw but I’ll go back and watch it. I just remember it feeling really good, glad you mentioned it so I will have a reference in future lol

      @@DiscManiac28 no prob! It will completely improve your lines, making gaps and throws in general being able to release at 10ish.
      Imagine if standing still in front is 9 o clock. Bring the disc in to your right peck then extend your arm like you are throwing. This would be 10 o clock. Hope that helps! Took me one year to realize this! Lol
