Lineman Belt 101 for Hunters

  • Hunters - there is no reason you shouldn't be safe climbing the tree. We all understand the importance of safety harnesses in a tree stands. You should be just as safe while climbing the tree. Converting to a tree saddle, or saddle hunting is one way to be completely safe when hunting above the ground.
    I call the Ropeman 1 a "mechanical prussic" in the video. I was unaware that there is an actual device called a mechanical prussic that functions differently than the Ropeman 1. For purposes of this video, the Ropeman is a mechanical replacement for a prussic knot.

    This is the best video I've found describing the ins and outs of how to operate lineman's belts - absolutely awesome content!

  • @Hisslave1
    @Hisslave1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Was a lineman for a over three decades and what you term as a "lineman's belt" is actually called a lanyard (flip line in arborist community). In the old days, we used a heavy, flat, rubberized piece of webbing with snaps on each end to hitch hike up a pole. It was simply called a safety. A lineman's belt was what we climbed in, similar to a tree saddle with no leg straps. As Urban Hunter says, NEVER use non locking carabiners for life support. There are many different styles and brands of flip line slack adjusters, the Ropeman is one.

    GET OUTDOORS!!! Best words I have heard from a youngster in years!! The prussic knot is one of the handiest knots EVER!! I use one on my lifeline, have one for linemans belt to set up sticks and set stand,and lower stand same way... simple!! I do like that fancy one tho and imagine in a saddle it is probably best!!

    I’m an arm amputee and currently hunt out of a climber stand. I want to get into saddle hunting. I am a rock climber so I do have climbing experience and knowledge in knots and I can belay. But haven’t seen saddle hunting setup in person. I think I can do all the steps but what I see might be a challenge is getting the linemen rope to slide up the tree. Any suggestions? I also shoot a compound bow with one arm.

    • @terry2346
      @terry2346 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Squirrel Boy A lot of the guys in videos recommend leaving the rock climbing harness attached to the safety line but just with a bit of slack so that if the main rope breaks you still have the lineman belt as a backup but you still have mobility. I like that idea! Sort of a belt and suspenders type of thinking! :)

  • @andrewtalamas
    @andrewtalamas 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is it truly safe to climb with a linemans belt? I mean a tether constricts the tree when you fall but a linemans belt is used and you slip if both feet go one direction off the trunk you are most likely to hit the ground. Arent you supposed to be with a twther at all.times? Im a bit confused

    • @G2Outdoors
      @G2Outdoors  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tether would be the best option, but it's impractical most of the time. The Lineman belt is not 100% fail safe, but it's better than nothing. Good point!

    I took a cam strap from my lone wolf sticks and added a carabiner to each side and it’s literally the same thing as an ascender for 1/10 of the price. Any cam strap will work just the same. Pull the tag end to tighten, press the cam button to loosen. One hand. Simple. Cheap. Safe and convenient. We trust them to strap down our atv’s and heavy objects on trailers. Save yourself some money people. It’s the same thing for a lot less money. I bet all you hunters have them in your garage right now. Cut the J hooks off with a cut off wheel, add carabiners and you’re done. You’re welcome

      Something like a Zigzag et.al. is a mechanical prussic.
