This video was made at my bow club in Nashville. I had to miss this demo. I’m a travel nurse in Texas right now. So disappointed I had to miss the tour. Thanks Greg for the video. Rolyn Smith
I do foodservice delivery for a living. I appreciate how each movement needs to be accounted for. I see comments about sweating and exhausting work. efficiency efficiency efficiency. That's the name of the game. Take your time, make movements count. Don't be in a rush. I don't care how you climb the tree. Your body is basically a machine. The faster you go, the more heat you generate. If your gonna be in the tree for several hours, why go up it like Mario Andretti? I personally like the method he demonstrated. Rappelling looks very nice. This also might solve my need for a custom pack for carrying a lot of climbing sticks. Very nice video Carl.
I use the seat of lw hand climber for my platform all the time and if I know I'm goin to an area with pretty straight trees and no limbs I got stirrups in it so I dont have to carry my sticks.
Some of the comments crack me up... maybe a bit of work but no more than carrying a 20 lbs climber in to the tree. I sweat way more carrying a heavy stand to the tree than climbing with one stick, it’s really not that much work. Take your time slow is smooth and smooth is fast. And as for dropping your stick, put a small paracord loop on the top step and a paracord theater to your harness, problem solved. I personally use a nighteze gear tie on top as a handle, I grab that handle first before disconnecting the cleat.
Good stuff, man. Making it easier for an older hunter to get into the woods without a lot of heavy baggage. I think I helped build the pavilion behind you. :-)
I use SRT for preset locations and a lone wolf hand climber for ‘going in blind’. Just leave a paracord loop if I ever want to hunt the tree again. The system he uses here is pretty sweet though! That roll pouch is sweet. Cmon Tethrd if you guys market that you’ll sell a ton of them!
One stick method has been my "run and gun/bow system" for years. When I want to go light and try several different trees in one day, this is what I go with. Thanks for sharing guys.
@J H DIYsportsman, The hunting public, Southern ground hunting, Hunt Appalachia. At the moment, these are some of the few I could remember. The first guy I saw using the one stick method was "cbigbear1" (Hats off to him for starting me out on this)
Between this method, DRT/SRT or Sticks with 5-step aider, we have some great options to reduce kit and get into almost any tree. I really like that stick, having it double as a platform is even better!
The only thing I don't like about this is the slack in the tether when you climb. I actually use the climbing belt in conjunction with one sticking. That way if anything happens and I fall, the climbing belt will catch me and I don't fall 2 to 3 feet into my stick.
With a linesman belt all you do is advance the tether to the bottom of the branch, lean into your linesman, unclip the tether, then advance the tether beyond the branch, and continue.
For me, by the time limbs are encountered your fairly high. I’d employ a second tether perhaps. Lineman’s rope is fine, but a slip, kickout or any mishap would be a rough drop till the lineman rope caught.
Sticks are so light and stackable now. Probably not worth the effort for me at least. But I love to see hunters innovate. Its definitely made the sport more fun.
Loved the video and i think i'm going to switch to this method. With practice it looks no problem. You could use a prusik instead of that belay device then just use a belay loop/ black diamond atc/ petzl reverso to descent or even a munter hitch (know your knots before you try any of this. As someone who used to climb a lot i shudder when I see people dropping or throwing gear on the ground. It may seem harmless but if you drop a carabiner on a rock or especially a belay device it can knock things loose. Its been force fed to me that you never drop things that hold your life on a line and you never step on the ropes. Inspect all your gear everytime you go out. stay safe out there people! enjoy the hunt.
Non saddle hunters: "That looks crazy dangerous!", saddle hunters: "Way safer and a whole lot more fun!" I love hunting like this, it's just so much fun! Thanks for the great video on your technique
VERY very nice video my friend can you let me know were i can get a pouch like the one you have maybe not exactly but something similar. God bless you and thank you for the video
Nice setup. I do almost the exact method but without that awesome rope carrier so my climbing rope/tether gets let out and hangs down while I climb. I carry a hand ascender as well. If I need to come down and grab a dropped stick or come down for a break I rappel down and SRT back up. I also carry a 10’ tether/lineman to go around limbs or sometimes I may need to reposition at the top.
Carl, I hunted public land for over 60% my deer hunting yrs. I use climbers still and set up fixed position stands in likely spots that I may only hunt 1-2 times. Those I get into using my lone wolf sticks. appreciate
Wish I could go back to the days of being 235 lbs haha. This would have been perfect for going in and out of different spots every time I sat...I never really hunt a spot more than 2-3 times without moving somewhere else and then coming back later if there’s activity and this is the way I would do it.
If anyone could help... I'm a long time bowhunter, and just starting saddlehunting this year. In my quest for to get my set up, I purchased the red Madrock and not the black.. is this red useless, and should I try and return it? I'm on the forums and pages and I somehow missed that😬
Does anyone know if this is going to be something TETHRD comes out with soon? I love that stick for one. I love the extra foot room it has (I have a size 15 foot). I also love that SYS Hauler Pouch. Perfect for rappelling rope. Would be awesome if they brought this to the market. I would be first in line.
i have been practicing with climbing spurs but I am moving over to this method. I live where there is a lot of aspen and its not illegal but the cuts into the trees don't look good especially if i return to a spot.
K just getting into sticks saddle and where can I see the button and knot close up and slow enough? You said something about lock it down but I didn’t follow what you did
This is my preferred method to climb if I dont have a preset and would not be srt climbing. Only thing I would add to this video is that once you're at climbing height I would use a prussik or some kind of safety knot above and below the belay device just in case the device failed or you accidentally moved the lever on the madrock also the device is not designed for hands free activity. You could always transfer to a tether as well to be on the safe side.
Pretty cool system. Definitely going to take a fair amount of general fitness and maneuverability to do but you can get as much or as little height as you want. My only question would be how doable is it with some heavier gear on? Its all well and good to be climbing around and repelling in September when its 75 degrees but what happens in December when you have a heavy jacket and gloves and whatnot. The reduced dexterity and mobility would make this a lot more challenging I would think
I want that pouch he's using for his 40ft tether! Did I miss where he got it from? I'm a new saddle hunter, Phantom, but repel down as well. I use a lone wolf hand climber to get up.
I’ve never saddle hunted - only hunted out of pop-up blinds and tree stands. How well will a set up like this hold if you’re caught in some rain? Great video!
i have not been hunting in a saddle for long but I know you will be safe in some rain now if its a down right pouring out you might not be able to get down just yet do to lack of vision but you wont slip down the tree if that's what you are asking
I wanna see this setup on a tree that's not straight i wanna get into saddle hunting to hunt multiple trunk trees some dont split until your already 10ft off the ground how would that be done multiple tree tethers?
Very good video. I notice that the stick that Carl is using in this video as well as the stick that DIY Sportsman is using in his video look very similar to each other and to the "One Climbing Stick" that Tethrd is planning to release soon (in early 2021). Is the Tethrd One Climbing Stick the result of the prototype that Carl is showing or is there some other common ancestor to all three?
I love this system! I'll definitely need to practice it and make modifications for my gear. I think I'll make one of those pouches too! Itll go great with my DIY saddle. It appears the madrocks are sold out any other rappeling devices you might recommend?
Ran into the same issue. I ended up finding the Safeguard here. shop.blackjackmountainoutfitters.com/Mad-Rock-SAFEGUARD-Springless-Belay-Device-699320.htm
Very interesting climbing method (great video too). My initial reaction is wondering if you accidentally snag that bow pull up rope when you're at height.
I think it's the kind of process where you have to practice it and really nail it down. This isn't for the guy that hunts 5 times a year on the back 40.
I like doing this method. But. My problem is I get that repel rope stuck sometimes in branches. And to get it down I have to climb a different way if it can’t put weight on that rope again
So quick question it looks like you're using a 8mm rope on a ropeman isnt the ropeman rated for 10-13mm? i know this is an older video but me and my friend were arguing because i dont find it safe but thats he runs his set up as well.
Greg and/or Carl, I am trying to decide which saddle I should buy so that I can give saddle hunting a try. I am leaning towards buying a two panel saddle like the ESS (rather than a single panel saddle like the Phantom). What do you think of one panel saddles vs two panel saddles? I am definitely going to try saddle hunting using multiple climbing sticks for ascending and descending, but I am also going to try the one-stick method for climbing and repelling down. Does the need to rappel when using the one-stick method effect the one panel vs two panel saddle equation in anyway?
The only criticism I have is to never drop climbing hardware on the ground. My safeguard comes off the rope and back onto the caribiner and hangs on my harness. Too easy to lose it in the leaves or get dirt in it.
I learned the hard way and now I climb with a 30’ “tether” on a Madrock Safeguard. If my stick falls off I can just zip back down and grab it. In fact, I carry a hand ascender so I can just SRT back up and carry on.
First things first the bag seems useful I would like to see it in production, secondly I need to know if you're using the 8mm oplux and if you are do you feel safe using that madrock because I don't believe it is rated for that small of a diameter, I use roughly the same method except WE steps and a 9.5 mm rope and grigri, I want to be able to use the smaller diameters to save room but most descenders aren't rated for anything below 8.9mm. Please let me know how you feel using the 8mm rope.
I was using a 10mm for rappelling and got a very similar version of oplux from eastern woods outdoors. The safeguard works well with it. But I will say that the 10mm and a atc with prussik backup worked great. And yes the 8mm is more compact but having both side by side I probably could have stayed with my 10mm and been fine. It’s not mind knowingly less compact.
@@G2Outdoors the madrock website states a 8.9mm as the smallest rating, but we are using static and not dynamic but at the same time like all the videos on static rope vs dynamic in decent devices says you have to try it my only concern would be losing the tension on the device and it is not able to grab hold of the rope within a few inches but rather over a foot of drop and on static and thats not health for the body, i currently use the 9.5 mm kernmantle rope and it just feels stiff and hard to pack up. But petzl does appear to sell made to order Petzl exo "escape kit" which uses 7.5 mm rope and a descender like the grigri except designed for the smaller rope sizes but im not sure it would be worth the $400 price tags. I've been considering if I drop to the 8mm rope to just use a ropeman for the tether portion and then maybe a locking figure 8 system to descend with the ability to stop and untie my WE steps. Long story short thank you for the responses It appears I still have more research to do.
@@giobowers2398 Their website says it's rated 8.1 in a rescue/rigging operation. 8.9 is for dynamic climbing. That's not really how we are using the device. I'd feel confident using 8mm rope with the Safeguard. I've also used the Ropeman with 8mm ropes which is outside their spec and not something I recommend anyone else do. Anecdotally it worked for me, but obviously that's outside of their specs. I also have used the analog version...the Rock Exotica mini 8. There's more of a learning curve to that one.
@@G2Outdoors i figured the ratings between dynamic and static would differ, but endgame right now I ordered some 9mm Sterling and my Tethrd G hooks should be in soon too so I will DIY the heck out of a 1in webbing strap to strap down my rope over using the dump pouch I currently have. Also the 9mm was on sale for half the price of 8mm so easier decision of $30 vs $80. Im trying to save all the weight i can, buddy and i are trying for Sika on the maryland eastern shore and on the preserve we are going its gonna be a good hike to anywhere to hunt from the required parking areas so all weight savings right now would be really beneficial. That and now I have a spare rope to hard setup on my property for all the bucks I need to eliminate this year, absolute infestation of antlers (plenty of cool trail camera photos) but not a single 10 point. I will update on the gearhead t18 lethality as well. Thanks for all the information again.
Hey Ted, I am not an expert, but hopefully I can help. The lifeguard is a belay device used below a rock climber. If no weight on the rope, the rope slides freely, which is bad when climbing and unweighting the rope. The safeguard is more of a progress capture device and will not have the rope slide when unweighted, which is safer. Good luck!! I would get trained on repelling if possible at a local gym.
There is an internal spring in the Lifegaurd that will keep the cam open. The Safegaurd does not have this spring, which means the cam will close and hold the rope with very minimal effort. This is exactly what you want for this application.
Just so I’m understanding correctly, if you are to stand up and let the rope go slack the lifeguard will drop down the rope. I’ve got a lifeguard and have rappelled from it and used it for srt a handful of times.
Ted Otten yes, the Lifeguard is always trying to stay open because of the internal spring it has. That is why you don’t want to use it for this application.

Very cool! I would like to see a video of him doing it with limbs on the tree to see how he maneuvers around the limbs.
If I had to guess. Lineman belt until he gets the tether attached over the limb and then continues as normal.
For a straight tree like that a lone wolf hand climber seat would be perfect.

Yes he's using OPLUX. The Madrock Safeguard is rated for 8.1mm to 11mm rope diameter. Should be within spec. I think the Oplux is actually 8.3mm
8mm oplux in a 8.1mm safeguard? How’s that hold up?
This is for demo purposes. I don't recommend you use gear out of manufacturers specifications.
@@G2Outdoors well said 😉 I may stick with HTP if the oplux is not as “grabby” in the safeguard.
Can you explain the difference between the lifeguard and the safeguard? I’m not seeing the part the lifeguard won’t do.
Can you buy these one steps yet?
Waiting on that pouch and step!
Why 40 ft of rope is it to actually hunt that high? Can I just have enough rope for hunting hight?
