Thats the quest. I have received comments from a lot of modelers that have either dug up an old project and are going to start work on it again, or are flyers of ARFs that want to try something new. My goal has been to reduce the intimidation level. This is not rocket surgery you know.

Great stuff, I'm working on my second scratch build of my own design. First design I pretty much copied my favorite techniques from all the different kits I've built, the one I'm working on now is about 80% lightweight birch plywood. It's very simple and lightweight and strong. It has a fuse very similar to a simitar flying wing, but its a parosol monoplane with a tail mounted on the top of the rudder.....I'm hopeful it flies as good as it looks lol.
Here’s a little tip on blocking up like you did with the tail. There are some things called adjustable parallel blocks that would work perfect for that.
If you put a small pen mark halfway across the top of the formers it helps a lot when you eye them through to avoid a " banana " or even use a string line from front to back touching the pen mark
some info. 1) when joining wood, the surfaces to be joined Should be sanded/defuzzed. 2) at 3:59, when building a wooden model, the Preferred adhesives are wood CEMENT or CA. you have Just stated an example, of why this is so.
Hallo can you use something else to straight the fuselage And the under side put the pièces also in oposide direction for strength How do you gone fix the wing Thanks and great building I dont have a great experience but the one i made they fly greetings Whats are the mearsuments of the wing and fuselage greetings
Ron, the board itself is just a piece of 20 or 22 gauge sheet metal that I lay on top of the workbench. You can usually find this material at a furnace heating cooling hvac shop and have them cut it custom to whatever size fits your building needs. The magnets can be had from amazon. I have a link to them in the description of every video. Or if you cant see the description. Find the video I made Viewers Questions Answered. I titled them on the screen. Once you have those, you are unstoppable.
Hi Dan, Great videos. I have subscribed and am trying to catch up with your build. Could you possibly number your videos so it is easier to watch them in the proper sequence? Something like S1E2, or PlaneX_Build_Pt3? That would be helpful. Or maybe you can pass this suggestion along to your editor. :)
Trixie is not good with numbers, she's more of an artist. That's a great idea, I will see if I can go back and number them some how. Im following a guitar builder that is putting an acoustic guitar together... I love watching craftsmanship. But the one thing that irritates me is he has posted probably 70ish videos, and... no sequence... I see your point. Let me see if I can fix it.
@@kemillheim I added EP numbers to the title of each video and will continue that forward... I also updated a playlist from my channel that has them in order... Check it out!!!! Thanks for the tip.
Pardon my ignorance, but if the plans show the plane in completed form with the fuselage tapered, how do you cut the balsa to the actual non-tapered size needed?
@@Capgains7777 well, the fuselage of most airplanes have a taper to them, especially towards the tail, making the actual piece of wood needed different from the side view.
@@insanegaming9410 if you are referring to the Ryan's Rebel plan, its true the fuse does taper to a point in the rear. However the sides, top and bottom are flat so it is like a box. The formers inside are rectangular as well so when it comes to cutting the balsa the plan template works perfectly. Now if this were a round or tube shaped tapered fuse, in most cases the formers inside would be round or curved in shape and you would be faced with using sections of sheeting or planking that would bend around those forms. (Which can be an art in itself) Pretty common in scale planes that emulate rounded fuses covered in sheet metal.
I went to a furnace/air conditioning contractor and asked them to cut a piece that fit over the majority of my work bench. They usually keep an inventory of bulk sheet metal and the equipment to cut it. I believe its 60 inches long and 24 wide. You can go with smaller sizes if you are building smaller aircraft. I think its 22 gauge galvanized steel which makes it lighter and easier to work with when you are moving it to and from the bench top. I store it leaning against the wall when its not in use.
Hi Tom, Yes very well then. Just so happens that I am changing the engine choice and as a result will need to reset the mount holes. So I will be doing that this week. While I am doing that, I will take the time to walk you through the markings and how I use them to plot the engine. I'll also show you how to reset the firewall for a different engine. Sometimes we make mistakes, sometimes we need to change the engine. That set of magnets, angles, steps and jigs from airfield models looks top notch. You will have to let me know what you think of it. Take care.

When you say it's a lost art. I know but I'm 82 so I learned the old way. thanks so mush. And there is a lot of new struff.
Here I am again, I’m hooked on your videos. Please keep up the great work.
Yes! Let's bring back this dying art. I get as much enjoyment out of building my airplanes as I do from flying them. Keep up the great work Dan!
WTF?
Couldn't help but chuckle when you mentioned snapping the firewall on a hard landing. Never seen one go like that but I can imagine it xD
You’d be surprised. There a lot of leverage weight in the engine, a good heavy prop, and sometimes a nose weight on the end of a plane.
Fun to watch-- hopefully this enthuses a new batch of builders/flyers!

That’s so cool!!! I’m a 16 year old who scratch builds. We are a rare breed (young scratch builders). Not the sort of building I do but that’s cool!!

Great videos. I am scratch building a 1/5 scale PBY-5A Catalina. Your videos help me to see what is coming up for me.
Love the Catalina. Beautiful water bird, and had a ton of defensive firepower on board.
Good job Dan and Kitty :)

epoxy is fuel resistant , but I would not spread it with the same mixing stick he stirred it with.

Ya I did my formers like that to I broke f4 3 times lol
I almost think that F4 and F5 should be made of lite ply instead of balsa. I'm sure the designer was trying to keep things light.

Hi Dan where did you gen the red squares?
Agree with bringing back building your own planes instead of just pulling them out of box Styrofoam plane that most of them fly like crap.
Where did you get the sheet steel magnet board

On this part I used the original brown colored poly based glue. Gorrilla has really branched out in products, this was the first product they made.
