- Transvaal was on top of the world in 1993. The won the M-Net Nite Series, Super 10, Lion Cup and Currie Cup that year. Arguably the greatest season ever by a South African side.
Francois Pienaar's men dominated the Super 10 series and easily won all four of their pool game before hosting the mighty Auckland side in the final at Ellispark.
It was a tight contest and Auckland nearly snatched victory at the end, but two tries by legendary Springbok hooker Uli Schmidt sealed the game for Transvaal.
It's amazing to see how low key the whole event was. In 1993 the Currie Cup was still more important than the Super 10 title, but it was still a landmark moment in Golden Lions rugby history.

At the time I have little doubt Auckland was the best rugby team in the world club or test and for transvaal to beat them shows what a phenomenal side they were and coached by the great kitch Christie.
Awesome rugby....remember people that rugby back then was still "officially" amateur . Most of these guys still had day jobs

Incredible how SUPER rugby was completely mismanaged. When you had only 10 teams, all the internationals were crammed in fewer teams, It was almost test level in some games. I made a point to watch it when I lived in the UK. They watered down the product by stupid over expansion.
Great match. But I think the try-making pass at 19:01 was forward. The commentator's buildup on the subsequent conversion attempt, starting at 19:13, makes me lol. "He's had some pressure kicks. He had to do one, he had to do another, he missed this."

The Golden Lions is Historically known as Transvaal. Like the Bulls/Blue Bulls is historically known as Noord Transvaal/Northern Transvaal

Scott Hornell Back in the day rugby was broadcasted on our public network. Rugby is still very popular among Afrikaans people, so they used to split the commentary. 20 mins of each half would be Afrikaans commentary. These days we can choose which language, English, Afrikaans or even Xhosa
