The Wraith Filming Locations - Then and Now

  • Thanks for checking out my Wraith filming locations video ! The Wraith has been one of my favorite 80s movies for as long as I can remember. I knew I had to do a Wraith filming locations video as soon as I got out to Tucson Arizona. This movie has it all and quite possibly jump started my interest in cars as a young kid. The Wraith car, the Dodge M4S Turbo Interceptor was and still is such an amazing looking car. This is also back when Charlie Sheen was just staring out his acting career.
All in all, it took me almost 3 weeks to find and film all of these locations. Its been 30 years so obviously lots have changed which at times made things extremely difficult to locate certain scenes.
The Wraith took me all over Tucson high and low. They filmed down in the cactus valleys, and way up in the Catalina Mountains. Mt Lemmon was one of the most interesting places to see, I can understand why they decided to film up there. Unfortunately, there was a death during the filming of this movie on those roads and as a result there is no more filming allowed up on the Catalina Highway. Very narrow, windy roads with scary drop offs.

Wow, Dave Sherrill. An honor to reply to one of your comments, lol. The Wraith is my favorite movie of all time, the soundtrack too, it was so good. The Skank and Gutterboy scenes was always hilarious. i always wished there was a Skank and Gutterboy spin off. Like before The Wraith took place. if done right i think it would've been successful. it would've probably been popular with stoners. i always loved the Skank and Gutterboy scenes. i remember watching The Wraith with my friend, we was drinking and smoking some good weed and we had tears in our eyes and having trouble breathing from laughing so hard from watching the Skank and Gutterboy scenes, great times!
i always wanted to visit the locations as well and get either the Blu-Ray-(if they ever release the U.S. version), DVD, VHS, or Poster autographed by the cast.
if you have any kind of memorabilia from The Wraith or any other movie, you should upload a video to TH-cam showing the stuff. Fans appreciate that kind of stuff, i know i would.
Anyways, this video and your comment made my day. i wish you nothing but the best Dave, you too Mobile Instinct, i loved this video and can appreciate it.

I know a ton about that area and the filming of that movie... one cameraman died on the Catalina Hwy when the camera truck struck some rocks sticking out... Also that air park was the correct one... not sure what its called now, but it was Bob's Airpark back in the day... its was a salvage yard... We filmed a Tom Petty video there once as well... I used to hang out in those planes as a kid with my buddy drinking beers and sitting in all the planes and talking about the Vietnam war where lots of those plane had come from back in those days of the Wraith.... The burger joint was a taco and tamale joint at one time, if I am correct it was built in the 50's originally... Sabino Canyon where they filmed the water scenes was a very fun place back in the day for kids to go hang out and play in the cool snow run off... It was free and it had a one way road that let you drive and park right by the water and yes their was other parking lot types areas there as you mentioned that are not in your current day vid...Anyway, I could go on as I know that area well despite living much of my life in Los Angeles considering I was raised in Tucson when the population was squat and I was in the film industry for many years... Very cool that you would do a video on the Wraith.....

Also it was the 4th ave bridge they were under... it was torn down and replaced... Oh yeah the jumping cactus are brutal...pulled many out of myself.. best way is with a comb and do it fast... the bridge and train tressel is a place we would off road our 4x4's to via the wash and hang out under and play in the cool water and shade on hot summer days...

    @ Mobile Instinct
I can state with absolute certainty that the old 4th Avenue Underpass was the one used in the film. As a longtime resident of the area, I traveled it on foot and as a driver hundreds and hundreds of times. I was also on the advisory committee that helped decide its fate and what would replace it.
First off, there are actually three railroad underpasses in close proximity; Stone Avenue, 6th Avenue, and 4th Avenue. The 4th Avenue Underpass that you walked through is a complete replacement. It was built alongside the old one, which was then demolished when the new one opened up to traffic. The 6th Avenue underpass remains unchanged from the time of its construction.
If you look at the underpass in the film, you will see that the raised sidewalk is separated from the roadway by round columns and a double chain rail, which also continues through the approaches. It also has, as you noted, a solid wall dividing the lanes. That was the construction of the old underpass. On the other hand and as you can see in your video, at the 6th Avenue underpass the sidewalk and road are separated by an arched wall with a double tube steel railing set at a 45 from vertical, which doesn't match the film. The Stone Avenue underpass is also separated by a wall, this time with narrower trefoil arches and a trefoil arched concrete balustrade, which also doesn't match the film.
So, we are left with a structure that no longer exists. Fortunately there are pictures. Here is a link to a page with five shots of the old 4th Avenue underpass that clearly match the film. www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WM1N6R_Fourth_Avenue_Underpass_Tucson_AZ
    Great video by the way.

NOT A FAIL AT ALL! All three of the parts, you showed, ARE from that Daytona. The radio I recognize, the belt buckle had heat damage, they use gasoline for those movie explosions, and gas burns hot and distempers metal, like that buckle showed. The radiator could have only gotten burnt, melted and fused, by an explosion and fire. That's why it was fragmented. All three, super cool, after 35 years, amazing!!!

      @brandonsavitski 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I'm honestly surprised the film crew didn't do an extensive cleanup effort after filming the scenes to insure there were no left over debris or prop sets left behind. Seeing these parts still there after all this time is quite amazing. Definitely was a treat to see this.

Filmed in my hometown when I was 36, The Wraith is dedicated to the memory of Bruce Ingram, a camera operator who died during the filming of one of the car chases; another crew member was seriously injured. According to supplementary material on the DVD, the camera car was overloaded and overturned while traveling at high speed. Catalina Highway has been made a bit safer, but frankly, then and now, you NEVER should have filmed at such a high speed on such a mountain road.

It's not a stock Chrysler radio, But.... Audiovox made exact fit upgrade radios for dealers to install, in case someone wanted a better unit than the car left the factory with. Highly likely that came from the movie car. They were wired exactly like that. That seat belt bracket is 100% the shoulder harness mounting bracket from an 80s Chrysler.

First off, I gotta say awesome job dude!!. I've been looking forever on TH-cam to see if anyone has ever made a Wraith filming location shoot. To my surprise I just stumbled upon it and I love it!!. This is one of my all time favorite 80's movies. I remember when I was 8 years old watching it on HBO back in 1987. I've wanted to go to Tucson for years to check out the filming spots like you did. In 2015 I went to Phoenix and I just had to make the drive down to Tucson. We didn't have a lot of time and it got dark. But I was able to see a few of the spots. I got to see where Packard and the Wraiths race scene was exactly, which was I remember taking a left at the end of gates pass road, right where old Tucson studios and the museum are. In fact, in packards race scene where he goes over a little curved hump in the road is still there. I went right over it. That road hasn't changed that much. I also got to see Kerri's house. That looked a lot different back then, well the street does. Not sure if they added the green street lights for the movie, or if they were really their at one time. Also, the grass was probably put in for the movie because you don't see a lot of grass in Arizona. Regrettably I wasn't able to make up the Catalina highway, it got too dark. Also, thanks for pointing out the correct bridge. I thought it was the 4th Ave bridge. But I think your right on about it being the 6th Ave bridge, if you notice. The 4th ave bridge seems a bit too short for the length of the race scene. Big Kay's I went by as well. East Benson Highway. There are a lot of conflicting stories on what that really was. A local told me it was a pizza place that they borrowed for the movie. Another local said it was specifically built just for the movie. Who knows. I plan on going back and spending more time checking it out again. Thanks so much!!.

Absolutely phenomenal video. You nailed everything. I love the movie so much, being an 80's baby, and I have fond memories of watching this with my dad.
At 1:23, Amazing to see this iconic road. I always wondered whose mailbox is that randomly sticking out by that road. Looks great. You're right the Wraith drove out on that road at the end of the police chase and at the very end of the movie on the motorbike.
At 2:15, I'm amazed at how similar the home is to the movie, and that the large tree is still there. Awesome. Wow. I'm ready to move in lol.
At 3:51, astounded to see this lovely area with the creek. I didn't know there is still water there, thought it had dried up. You definitely nailed the locations people were on the rocks.
At 14:04, you better believe I would have went home with that seat belt buckle.
At 15:53, such a gorgeous scene, my goodness. Looks great.
At 20:48, Anderson Dam, I immediately recognized the location seeing the water pouring out from the opening under the road, and the entire area is so beautiful. I can see the romance in it. Definitely a date location or stop.
At 22:08, I think you got it. The rock formations look identical, as does the shape of the opening.
At 22:36, very cool to see that bridge. I didn't think it was real. Awesome man.
Sorry about the conditions you had to brave, but I for one really appreciate your work and effort.
You should consider a Patreon account so people can donate to support your endeavors, especially for fans that don't really travel or are not able to. I was going to throw you a couple hundred, but by the end of the year I'll have a few more collectible statues that will run me a few grand.
Hydraulic fluid toast and cheers my friend. Stay safe out there.

Cool filming!! I was living near there (Green Valley) when The Wraith was filmed. They drove on Sahuarita Road and also the old Duval Mine Road. The 80s were a different time in Tucson, lot of good movies coming out of it like "Can't buy me love" and "The Wraith". Wished they would make a second "Wraith" where Billy Haskins still has the legendary Turbo Interceptor, and his brother returns and they both go after road gangs who have taken over the desert.

Thank you so much for posting your video brother. I watched the wraith when I was only dating the woman who became my first wife, and we’ve been divorced for more than 20 years now, but still remember that movie as one of our favorites. I had the pleasure of going out to Tucson Arizona to visit and got to go to the spot where big KAYS burgers used to be and had to go back to Jacksonville Florida (by hometown. )
I thought I would’ve had more time to check out the other filming sites of the wraith,
Unfortunately I didn’t, but I hope to go back out that way again sometime on vacation and see the other locations. It sucks you got that cactus in your foot ,

As for that truck crash scene, and your assumption on the road. You’re correct. I’ve worked in this area for two decades and coworkers who worked back then, they call that area “old I-10” or the original I-10. Scattered around, you’ll find chunks of the old highway still there, in ruins and overgrown.

The Mt Lemmon hwy has been widened, repaved and lots of guardrails added since that movie was filmed. There used to be a lot of accidents up there before that. I'm not surprised you found old car parts. I ride my motorcycle up there quite often. Its a beautiful ride. The Sabino Canyon scenes are some of my favorite. You can no longer drive anywhere near where those scenes were filmed. We spent a lot of time up there in the 80's. Lots of great swimming holes for us desert rats.
