Whip over when opponent is doing a single or double leg takedown. A good time to hit whip over is right when opponent’s knee has hit the mat-I would throw in direction of the downed knee.
If a whip over was there, I would try a whip over.
But-if their other knee was down, I would still throw in direction of downed knee, except then it wouldn’t be a whip over-it would be a lat pull throw assisted by a whizzer push-all in same direction as opponent’s downed knee.
Thank you for showing high level competition doing these moves.
You made a good point, showing whip over against opponent’s shot with a downed knee. Showing whip overs while retreating or pushing forward.
While retreating from opponent’s shot, the opponent can become too far extended (reaching) and a whip over is made easier because opponent has extended too far while on one or both knees. Easier to throw when opponent is on one knee rather than two knees. But opponent can still be thrown while on two knees, even though he is more stable than on one knee.

For the standing variation you can use Hayden Hidlay's 2018 Semi-final against Alec Pantaleo. One of my favorite! Great video too, I love how in-depth you go for what seems like such a simple move!

In my very first tournament in high school, at 119lbs ,my opponent was a girl. I was winning via points but the ref was literally colorblind and was giving her my points!
My coach said he would murder me if I lost to a girl but I swear to god it was one of my hardest matches. She could just twist her lower body 180 degrees and then twist her upper body out of anything I was doing! And most wrestling moves are made to pin the upper body and shoulders so none of the shit I was doing was working. Eventually I just ended up catching her in a cradle and winning gold in the tourney. My final match was against my own training party err r and close friend. It was a vicious and brutal match hahaha. We were both almost unable to move by the end of the match. He was pissed I beat him. It wasn't that I had better technique. We were both pretty equally skilled and knew eachithers moves and tendencies. I literally won by a hair just bc I was stronger or had more left in me by the end of the match so I could pin him. Good times. Almost miss that grind....almost lol.

@@bxmully almost? Almost? Lol, Those were some of the best days. Those were some grueling days, but we had some great camaraderies & some great friendships were built in that wrestling room. The grind was tough, but it helped prepare us for some of the battles in life.

I was master of a similar move. If you have a strong upper body and a low center of balance this variation can work well for you. Go to 4:28 and freeze it. Watch as the opponent shoots in, if I was the Ohio State wrestler instead of undercooking with my right hand, I would throw a right cross face hard and fast and take him to the mat on his back for a pin, or a 5 point move. It is like a standing head lock as he shoots and extends his arms. Try this move it worked for me many times over the years. I literally would bait my opponent by extending my right leg out unprotected to get them to shoot and had it perfectly timed. I loved the move.

Well done! One thing I would change is that instead of saying the hand controlling the elbow is doing a dumbbell row (don't forget, the opponent gets to wrestle and defend, too), that left hand on Tomasello's elbow is extending it away from his body, as are his shoulders and chest, completely changing his center of gravity. In a whipover situation, getting opponent out of good position (shoulder, knees, and toes alignment), and making his weight suddenly shift forward will make for an equally effective whipover. Thoughts?

I was watching this video and the one about the cement mixer/cow catcher. For the cow catcher you need an elbow to elbow underhook (or deeper), but apparently not for the whip over. Can anyone explain me why? They look pretty mechanically pretty similar to me. Thanks

  • @insidetrip101

Some of these aren't actually whip-overs, but instead just throwbys from an underhook. Like the one in 5:18. He starts trying to use a whipover, but then knows its not going to work and since his opponent isn't overhooking super hard, he just throws the underhook by.
A little bit of a nitpick, but something that I feel ought to be pointed out.

    • @DPSBreakdowns

They are pretty similar moves, but the cow catcher uses a headlock/chinstrap grip instead of far tricep control. Both use an underhook.

    • @DPSBreakdowns

Mechanically very similar to a cow-catcher except a cow-catcher generally uses a headlock grip instead of the far overhook. Both moves can be very effective.
