Magazine cut offs were popular for a time in military rifles, the thought being that if a soldier could use the entire magazine they would waste ammo. It turns the gun into a single shot weapon.

It encourages you to think about your shot and not simply blaze away like an American. Or if you need to administer a shot at an execution. Put down a wounded horse. Simply want the added safety because mass manufacturing is still a newish thing and you don't overly trust quality control because the idea of Quality Control literally hasn't been invented yet. Or it was a feature they wanted but didn't need and shite like that happens so why don't Americans just GTFO it?

I used to own a couple of these when I was younger. I made a bullet mould for the correct bullet size; the bore measures .455" to .456" so a regular .452" ACP bullet size won't shoot accurately. I also made cases from .45 Colt revolver brass and it worked great. I loaded so the bullet a 225 gr.would exit about 750 fps which would operate the mechanism properly and accuracy was superb. Nice shooting Mae.

Given that circa 1914 99.9% of armies world wide were still using horses the ability to single load was actually useful for destroying animals as it avoided having to continually reload single stack pistol mags which are awkward at best. One of the notable first adopters being the Royal Horse Artillery. Its also a handy way of putting one up the spout on top of a full magazine prior to going into action.

@@zoiders In no way am I rejecting the importance of horses during either of the wars, with their role based around transporting troops, ammunition, artillery pieces and wounded.
Nevertheless, they did NOT take part in the fighting on the front lines much aside from certain battles during the start of both WW1 and WW2. And for a simple reason - they are vulnerable to bullets.
And while the subject could be further discussed on the example of WW1, it was most likely the last time the horse would be used on a mass scale in modern warfare.
Say what you want, but I think there is a reason why cavalry was heavily replaced by tanks on the battlefield in both of the wars.

The two notch arrangement for the magazine is not a ‘cut off’. This arrangement was first used with the Chinese contract Remington Lee rifles that were supplied (and used) with multiple box magazines. The Chinese gave the French Marines, who were equipped with Kropatschek rifles, a nasty surprise, in what is now called Vietnam.

Yep, it is quirky, and probably quirky in a uniquely British way too, but remember that this is the birth of the semi-auto pistol as a military weapon and people were still figuring it out. Okay, the US got it pretty much right with the M1911, but compare it with some of the sidearms Mae has been playing with these videos. The Webley in't the only quirky one, and probaly not even the most quirky one either.

I love all Webley pistols, and I would love to own all of them but my budget says no! Lol

I believe H&R made some US knockoffs of the design. They're probably nowhere near as nicely made but might scratch the itch.

Hey there! Could you tell me, would the recoil on this pistol be strong enough to knock an 8 or 9 year old boy (who is shooting pistols for the first time) onto his butt? I'm writing a scene into a screenplay where this gun is featured. Thank you in advance!

That really does look like it was made in a shed. Given British arms manufacturing it probably was

H&R made some auto-pistols that looked similar.

Does it buggery. Its got the sharp edges of precise modern machining and an advanced locking system. BSA, Webley and Vickers were three of largest and most advanced arms manufacturers in the world at the time so I am not quite sure where the whole "shed" idea comes from. You seem to know very little about British arms manufacturing.

When I see these early guns with the slide cut like that with the barrel exposed, I just keep asking, "But why though?"
