I was especially impressed by the bassist, Jaco, although the band as a whole were amazingly talented. I Wiki'd Jaco and was so sad to find out he died at the age of 36 after suffering from drug addiction and mental issues. So many great musicians have suffered this fate. It's heartbreaking.

I thought I found the land of wonders, it suddenly opened up the world in me. Words are really too feeble to describe it. Zeppelin II , possibly, possibly the greatest Rock album of all time. Exceptional musicianship all round of course, but consider listening the whole album through focusing on the bass! John Paul Jones = genius of cool. Should check the Lemon Song next. Pure class!

I would recommend checking out 3 songs. The first one is Since I've Been Loving You live at Madison Square Garden 1973 official video. This is one of their best songs and the best live performance of it. Also Bring It On Home and I Can't Quit You Babe official video both live at Royal Albert Hall 1970. If you want to hear a softer side of Led Zeppelin, I recommend "The Rain Song - Jimmy Page & Robert Plant". This is a live performance they did after John Bonham died and the band broke up, and it's just Jimmy and Robert with the London Metropolitan Orchestra, but it is beautiful. It sounds very close to the original recording, too, because the recording also had an orchestra in it.

In mid-1960s, when recorded music switched from mono to stereo, combined with rising numbers of people listening with headphones, bands started experimenting with play between the channels. Hendrix did this a lot, swooping between "left ear" and "right ear" by altering the channel the vocals (or other instrumentation) were projected thru.

So great that you appreciate how the bass holds this song's hands, and holds it aloft.

One thing that distinguished Led Zeppelin from other generic rock bands is that their music was musically & lyrically innovative and interesting.

This song has one of the most fun to play bass parts ever. Yes... great bass part.

I think you would love the Lemon Song Biss and the bass line improvisation. Another song off the same album as this one and has a similar feel.

No, you’re not alone in admiring this song, the bass, vocals, drums, guitar, in fact all the elements meld in the most beautiful way

One of the best bass lines in all of R&R...In my top 3 LZ songs...Bass and Percussion are immaculate, but also Page's work (aside from his lead parts) is his work starting on the 3rd verse. Beautiful!..I've loved this song since it's come out, and it sounds new every time I hear it, still.

"Mine's a tale that can't be told, my freedom I hold dear"
"How years ago in days of old, when magic filled the air"
"Twas in the darkest depths of Mordor, I met a girl so fair"
"But Gollum, and the evil one crept up and slipped away with her
    Her, her, yeah"
Those lines were inspired by "The Lord of the Rings" by J. R. R. Tolkien, mentioning among other things the dark land of Mordor, Gollum, and The Evil One. Its first line, "Leaves are falling all around", is an adaptation of Tolkien's "Ah! like gold fall the leaves in the wind", the English translation of the first line of his Quenya (Elvish language) poem "Namárië". Robert Plant was a huge fan of J. R. R. Tolkien.
