One of the reasons is that the freshwater in glaciers and icecaps are melting and decreasing the salinity of the surrounding water

Salinity decreases with the depth. But on equator it increases with the depth upto a point and then it decreases. Salinity is high on the surface as more insolation is occurred.

Yes salinity increases with depth...and at depth is very much fixed as there is no way for lost or addition of salt.
