That was special to watch. We had a local RC event here in east TN a few weeks back and a few giant scale pilots agreed to fly together and play follow-the-leader. All the spectators really enjoyed watching and it built comradery among the pilots.
@@EssentialRC Yeah I've seen some really good companies sell these. Banana Hobby has turbines in Aero Foam kits. Skymaster quality is hard to beat but you're going to shell out 11k to 13k just for the kit.
Excellent pilots? Yes. Fun video? Yes. Better than I could do? Most definitely yes. I couldn't even come close to their abilities. Formation flying? No. Not even close.
Considering the drone shows with hundreds of drones flying in close proximity with great precision, why not the same with RC planes? A tight formation of 5 or 8 models, with one pilot flying the entire formation.
@@EssentialRC I might be wrong, but it appears to me that they were trying to fly in roughly the same direction, while avoiding a collision. Far from what I would call a formation, where positions would be planned and followed. Granted, I’d think it would be nearly impossible from a LOS perspective! I have been able to do it with a somewhat bigger, fast-ish FPV wing, together with three full scale planes in a diamond formation, where I was flying the wing between and behind, flying as a passenger with my ground station in the “boot”. My failsafe was set to cut the throttle and I flew behind the planes at all times. I would love to share the footage with you, however we were flying above crowds and, unfortunately, times have changed for the worse in RC legislation. Don’t get me wrong, these pilots are definitely very skilled and those jets are absolutely beautiful!

Yeah, when these birds fly it sounds so good in person. TopGun was this past month down by the house a really nice event.

Because those drones are not 'piloted'. They are programmed and fly using GPS and relative positioning. Totally different.
