I'd really like to express my appreciation for this series, my friend. I'm in college rn and I'm not kidding when I say that I find solace in construction and heavy machinery, among other mechanical things. That is to say, having a full, no BS, unbounded, from-the-ground-up construction project turned into a free watchable series is a huge stress reliever for me. I really hope you do actually financially recover from this because you're doing one hell of a job with the content. Thanks so much for being awesome bro!!

There is a DICK in every neighborhood. Mr Build It is at best marginally responsible for the driving of others. The transport company is who is responsible. But way to step up and alleviate the tension.
That’s the main reason why I didn’t get a house with neighbors around me. I bought my house 18 years ago and it’s in the middle of the woods in Pennsylvania. No neighbors, no stores, no hospitals. Just peace and quiet enjoying the wilderness. 🇺🇸
Hey @MrBuildit Alex please keep in mind now that you dug up youre water line that its not far enough under the surface anymore! It will freeze if you do not isolate it. In the current state its not winter safe. Electrical isnt as bad but you should really keep an eye out for youre water isolation
I'm actually glad you recorded the neighbor and played it for us. I think he was upset but still handled it well. He mentions the big trucks should not be using the entrance they had been and if they had been using the correct entrance it wouldn't have happened. He does not have to let you fix the problem. He probably doesn't know who you are or maybe he does and would rather have a professional do it. And to those who say he's a "get off my lawn " guy try living in Westchester County NY. I stepped one foot on someones lawn and they sent their dog after me.
That guy on the mini digger is a pro, especially when you see him slide out the levels so accurately.....you are lucky to have that skill level dealing with those slopes. My brother is a digger guy as we like to call him!! It turned out great, it looks amazing, imagine in other seasons what it will look like when there are shrubs and greenery. As for planting....my opinion when I first saw it is that on that first tier (and this depends on what season you will use it the most but I am presuming winter) red twig dogwoods, those vibrant red stems clashing against the white snow it would be amazing. They are so tall after there leaves drop and they leave these amazing red stems that unless ye get 3/4 feet of snow on that level they will always peak through. Love watching the builds....I am in Ireland and we don't celebrate it but Happy Thanksgiving!
Great video and amazing work building that wall in such a short time. One consideration is be careful with those end caps because someone may stand on them thinking they are glued and that could be nasty.
I built a 50 foot retaining wall 4 foot tall last summer. I did 80% of the block myself and leveled 75% of the first row myself... so worth it once done, but yes it flies once you get that first row. My blocks were a little different but were 80 lbs. each and I almost made it to the end without crushing my fingers lol
Too nice to the neighbour, ask what's his problem and tell him to get off your land, you offered to fix the problem and he was being a D over a few sprinklers.
@ 28:16 Deep breath and remember the legacy you're creating for your family (children) with your own to hands, ALSO...maybe use cement to fill-in the larger gaps that you can't unsee?!
So the bottom of the bottom wall has to be below grade but the bottom of the second wall can be 2 feet above grade ? Also no membrane to keep dirt/sand from being washed into gravel. Take a few years but eventually rock drain will become ineffective and wall will be compromised. At what point do you need to have a concrete footer and rebar in retaining walls in this area. 12 feet tall seems too much for compacted gravel.
I'm neither a geo-engineer or experienced hardscaper, but I was thinking the same thing. However, the team was following plans provided by an engineer, so I'm assuming they accounted for these things? Also, hopefully part of the engineers plans was a soil sample, which determined the soil might be sandy enough to let water through it, so no membrane between drainage rock backfill and soil backfill is necessary? But the on-grade footing for the second half of the wall seems very incorrect to me, based on current knowledge.
lmao I think you needed Matt's Offroad Recovery to come take out that stump as I bet with one of his recovery rigs he could've ripped it out no problem
Nice job! Is there going to be a railing in case someone doesn't realize where the drop is in the snow? Or someone's little brother gets sent into the house on a sled?
I was thinking the same thing. What is supporting the bottom of the upper wall from just sliding forward? Maybe the geo mesh? Or just a fingers crossed situation?
Same thing I was thinking. I thought there was some recommended calculation of buried courses per height of wall, but I might be mistaken; something like for every 8" of wall height, 1" should be buried? That, and the second wall should be laterally offset from the first wall by 2x the first wall's height? Aka - if the first wall is 4ft tall, then there should be 8ft of "flat" ground behind it, before your first course of the second wall. But i'm not geo-engineer and what I'm saying could be flat out wrong, or simply a Mid-Atlantic thing based upon the prevailing types of soil in the region?
He just sold out the driver in a a second. Did not even try to steer the conversation into a different way. Lol. Poor Gavin. Come on man, u don't sell out so easy!!! Lol
If only the spacing between the retaining walls was a little bit bigger, Would've been a pretty neat spot for a pseudo wrap around deck. Another lounge area, just elevated. All in all though, it turned out great! Y'all did a very nice job on it, sucks about the block sizing though... my OCD would be triggering hard about that little issue.

You're never gna get perfectly manufactured blocks. For masonry projects I always go with a wet substrate like mortar to compensate for those slight disparities between the building units. The concept of the pins to create that offset is great, but if you want to trick the eye and hide those seams/joints, mortar's the way to go. I've never worked with this product, so I'm not sure if you could combine the methods? But hey, more rigidity in a retaining wall couldn't hurt right?
All right now let's go get the trailer here in the morning with a ridiculous HUMILIATION and a good job of keeping the ball rolling on the floor and then I got SICK of peeing all day long with the elimenpeeeeeeeeing alll day and night forget about it😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😮😢😢😢t
Depending on who you ask, mortar isn't recommended, because you're creating a solid wall, preventing the water from seeping around the blocks in the event of clogs or over saturation, thereby increasing the hydrostatic pressure behind the wall. Yes, the water "should" drain through the gravel drainage backfill, down into the perforated pipe and then downhill of the wall, but that doesn't always work. Primarily, overtime, small grit, dirt, and roots start to clog up drainage pathways behind the wall, and if the wall is mortared, that backup water now has no place to seep out of to relieve the hydrostatic pressure on the wall. Basically, in some opinions, it's "safer" on the wall's structural integrity to allow water to "seep" around each block, in addition to draining down to the perforated pipe as intended. But all of this might depend on the blocks you're using, the composition of the soil, height of the wall, and your climate.

what a wonderful winter wonderland...you and your family are blessed people
Please mark all lines (gas) with caution tape or what is apporiate. Fantastic job!
Run a grinding disc along each row so the gaps even. I would wait until it's all together and had some time to settle beforehand though.

Pretty sure you’re supposed to alternate the caps narrow face, wide face - that should get rid of the unsightly pie shaped gaps.
That's what I thought as well, but from the b roll at the end, it looks like the narrow face doesn't have any texture. Maybe that's okay though?

Imperfections in the stone have to be so water can get through right? Those are essentially weep holes.

Yeah, return if paying that much should be perfect
Did they ask you to provide fall protection due to the height of the walls?
is that 30K including labor and delivery? because it sounds like a really great deal.
Wow that retaining wall would cost more than the A-frame if you hired a contractor to do it.
So confused can't picture how it's supposed to look like even though you are explaining well lm on builder I'll wait till the end when it's finished 😅
No protection on the gas pipe in the ground???

id ask for compensation for the blocks at the very least. no way im accepting crappy blocks that cost me $18k
It wouldn't make sense to return the 50 tons of concrete blocks after you men have installed it. The cracks can be filled with spray foam.
If you can see your neighbors, they're too close
I still haven't seen the video on the a-frame roofing😭😭😭😭
