Hey Pat. Billy here. We met at Bang Sue station a few months ago. What ever happened to roller skating in Thailand? There was a roller rink in Chiang Mai. Why aren't Thai people into roller skating?

When I first visited Bangkok in 1979 I went to see The Deerhunter in a cinema on Sukhumvit Road (if I remember correctly).
For the foreigners there was a large room with a glass separation in the back where they played the original English soundtrack.
I was in Thailand for 4 weeks in January 2024 after an absence of 40 years.
Many things changed. Luckily the food is the same!

Pat---One of your best Vids ! For me it brought back so many memories for this old oil rig veteran. MOS was fun for a short time. My home was Washington Sq btw the Silver Dollar and the Lone Star circa 1996-2008. The owner of the Lone Star now lives in Houston, Tx, USA and runs a restaurant there with her daughter. A lively bar after 9PM. Bourbon St for Holiday dinners were the best. Deny's Bar was my 1st bar in BKK and I lost my heart, and a large chunk of money. to an Isaan girl working there. Thanks for the memories.

I remember going to the President Cinema in !985 and stood up for the national anthem for the first time, watched a Thai Movie called Kampuchea, you could hear People crying. Great back then to get out of the Sun for a couple of Hours, watch a Tear Jerker and then back to the Hot Streets, back to boston inn for a swim, shower smoke and out for dinner, then a Beer in a few Bars, Corner Bar, Kings Corner, and Queens Castle about 11pm, no luck off to Thermae, Jobs done. Thanks again Pat, a lot of Memories.

Every time I look at those old photos or videos of the Bangkok's bygone days, I always have a strong penchant to be teleported back in time and experience all of those establishments (some that I had known or visited) which have vanished forever (I'm sure I'm not the only one). It was a very different world. Another thought-provoking and evocative account of Bangkok's past. Great work, Pat!

I like these vids where you find remains of the old Bangkok, very interesting.... Sad as well, at the destruction of Thai heritage..... as an aside, where did all the evicted Chinese end up? Scattered to the four corners of Bangkok or did they find a place to keep their community alive?.....

    • @BangkokPat

Love this video! In the mid 2000s I used to go to a club called Bed or Beds? Had beds around the dance floor to lounge on. Really great place but I heard it closed down or maybe the concept just got old? Also there was a jazz bar called Brown Sugar. Didn't find it last time I visited in fact all of Sarasin Road looks quite different. Now that I'm thinking about it, in the early nineties the Dusit Thani hotel had a basement nightclub with a model spaceship that flew around the room and at the entrance to Sukhumvit Soi 10 or 11 there was a drinks bar built into and around a tree. Both it and its owner were landmarks. He once told me the richest man in Thailand had made his fortune selling the little paper umbrellas they put on cocktails. And I believed him! 😂 What else lets see, oh yes a roller-skating restaurant. This was perhaps a little out of town? Remember going with my parents as a very young child in the 80s. It was a huge sprawling open air restaurant and all the servers were on rollerskates. Good memories. 😊

Another amazing video showing the history of this great city. If you look at the segment showing the Trocadero Hotel, you will see that next door is the offices for BOAC (British Airways), and on the street is, I believe, an Aston Martin BD5 with UK Plates, and behind it, an Austin A40 estate car, 2 historic English cars, in the middle of Bangkok.

So many great memories from the legendary Ministry Of Sound BKK, certainly one of the best clubs Asia has ever had. For me the biggest problem was the high entrance fee: 600 B + 1 Baccardi Breezer! More than 20 years later, that's not even the price of admission to Sing-sing Theater! Thanks for your videos.

I’ve been in all those places and it’s brought back a great memory!!! 😢 thank you for all that you do. I’ve watched more than once. It’s wonderful to see the old Bangkok as I remembered.❤️❤️❤️

Nice video and great channel Pat. I’ve enjoyed the “Vanishing Bangkok” series very much. Can you do a video showing the best places to see “Old Bangkok” ? Thanks again for all the great videos. 🙏🏼

Incredibly well produced video. Great information again. Didn't even know Bangkok used to have trams. Now that Thaksins back he might right some wrongs, and get Ministry of Sound reopened. 😊👍

I doubt he'll be so hard on the nightlife and drugs as before. His son was a major addict and living it up (so I heard) hence his clampdowns. The nightlife scene was never as good since.
