I am a "Bangkokian" since 1992 and BangkokPat is awesome, legit, and super informative. As an old dog I really enjoy when Pat is rewinding into the past and works in sequences from previous years - the timeline effect. Affirmative. Very well done and so super informative. I have been to many Bangkok Cinema's over the last 30 years. I hope one day Pat will bring up the Siam Hotel, its coffee shop, on Petchburi Road. Re: Ramkhamheng Sport Complex - I swim the 50 meter pool since 2001. The original annual membership was 350 THB - there were days I could bring a guest, another swimmer, for 5thb. During the membership sign up a health certificate (100THB) was required. Mine is still on file with no update required. Our days back then were slow, super friendly and simply joyful. Love the work and so glad I found this. Thank you!
Your videos around Bangkok elicit mak sentimental memories for me. In my 20's and 30's BKK was my candy store where I indulged in everything the town had to offer, good and bad. Now, in my 50's and married to a wonderfully down to earth Thai woman, I enjoy Bangkok in a much different way. I notice the places that were once thriving that have been passed over for the latest thing. I notice the vendors who are getting elderly but hanging on even when they have the last shop on the upper floor of a dying market building. I get my haircut from the old guy who has failing eyesight with his barber college certificate from the 1970's hanging on the wall of a shared shop in a part of town that's been left behind. Yes, your videos are perfect for me. Thanks.
Bravo! I just rewatched this video; an artful blend of storytelling, rare archival footage, history, culture, urban planning insights, sly humor (read the captions), cats and a guy on an elephant (15:25) for 2 seconds max. Viva Bangkok Pat!
@@BangkokPat Bangkok is a heaven for street photography, I lived there 2017-2020 and did a lot of walking and exploration as you do, without the research though hehe. "sadly" it too often ended to late nights at bars, fun but not too healthy long term. Miss the city still
Thank you Pat, what a ride down the memory lane. The night life in Bangkok has gone way down, all the old places have now closed. The late night party places are all gone.
This is really one of the best city guide TH-cam channels out there. I've been to Bangkok a few times and found it too hectic... this really gives you a good context on the city and makes me want to visit it again.
Fantastic videos Pat, love the music you use in backgrounds on all of them, never gets boring. I first went to Bangkok in 73, living and working there on and off until the early 2000s. Haven't been back for a few years but really love the history you bring with these videos...
My son who grew up summers in thailand loved getting electronics, computer parts, all sorts of stuff at pantip from2005 to 2019 great memories we still stay in area a few times a year
Once again, another past history of Bangkok of what nightclubs and hotels were like back then. You put a lot of work into these video's as always. All I'll say is thanks again and great video. You have a great day there in Bangkok.
Pantip and Pratunam market - can't imagine these places being gone. Vanishing indeed! Or is it just for us old-timers? Every place will change with time. But is Bangkok losing it's soul? Or just evolving? Whatever it is, it does make me a little sad.
I really enjoy your videos Pat. It must take a tremendous amount of research to create each one! It constantly amazes me how much detailed historical info and old photos you present in your stories/reports. Thanks Pat!
I used to be a regular at the Beer Garden, since the early 2,000s. I used to love to 'people-watch' there. Moved back to the UK 6 years ago, lived there for 20 years.
@@andrewmunn1724 That's so sad. Like I wrote in my own longer stand alone comment/reply, it seems like a lot of the charm of Bangkok is gone. Bangkok used to feel unique. Old alongside new, skyscrapers beside old smaller buildings. Street vendors beside modern brand shops. Now it more looks and feels like some generic corporate and bank controlled large Asian city. Kind of like Singapore, Taipei etc, dime a dozen. To me it already seemed like the BTS Skytrain was the initial phase in that. It made areas which used to take hours in traffic to come to, have fast access and then slowly but surely large hotels and malls wanted spots along those lines (preferably near stations). Then the military government/regimes/juntas in mid 2000/2010's up to 2019 chasing away all the street vendors and people was forced indoors to restaurants and shopping malls. Curfews, internet censorship, heavier crack downs on brand copy shirts, watches and stuff. Like it was a step-by-step plan all along to force people into shopping from the stores and such owned by the Thai elite and corporations. Then the pandemic hit the last nail in the coffin. It's just not the unique Bangkok feel anymore.
Thanks for the video.. excellent as allways and perfect when I eating a very late lunch here in Bangkok ( kra Pao moo with extra fried egg for 70 baht 555).
Sweet memories of NASA Spacedome and Dino's Bar ... In 89/90, I remember NASA Spacedome becoming NASA Amazon for a time, decked out to make you feel like you were drinking & dancing in a tree canopy,. It was quite surreal, especially with the spaceship still revolving above...... Another nice nostalgic documentary Pat.
Recently discovered your channel and enjoying it greatly. This is a welcome change from "Live in Thailand for $20 a Day" videos that proliferate on TH-cam and gives great insight and history.
Great memories of my first visit in December 1982. Stayed at the Honey Hotel on Sukhamvit Soi 19 and frequented the Happy Happy in Nana Plaza for my 'massages' and Thai sandwich. Got on really well with the mama san, she gave me a great $$ daily rate #goodolddays
Ah the old Pantip Plaza where on the ground floor you could buy copy anything and go up one level to buy the original. Great video, love your research.
Great video, I bought Microsoft server 2000 from store on the top floor, I loved it in there. Was some good nightlife in Soi 11, don't know if there still is.
Great video mate, was up in Bangkok last week, ventured into Soi 22 for a late drink in one of the little late naughty bars, the fun times there are a very distant memory but my god were they fun whilst they lasted!!!!
My favouring thing lately is to have a spliff, then watch one of your vids. Came for the monitor lizards, stayed for the literal channel on TH-cam that is a time machine.
Hi Pat. This brought back memories. I guess I must be one of the only still living farangs who can relate to old Bangkok . I first arrived in Bkk in 1978 and stayed at the Indra Hotel. Thereafter I'd either stay there or the more downmarket Opera Hotel which was in a soi off Petchburi road but also assesible via the sois from the back of Indra Hotel and the Pratunam garment market. Nowdays I live in Chiang mai and on the rare occasions I go to Bkk I don't recognise it . I really appreciate your videos which are so nostalgic for me . If the buildings could only speak , the stories could curl your toes. The Opera Hotel was particularly colourful. The ground floor rooms dedicated to curtain hidden fables. 😉
I walked with the girls of Rainbow bar ( Sukhumvit pre Nana Plaza)in '82 to the Pratunam market . It was late November and they were trying on their 'Christmas outfits'. It was tough to sit there watching them changing their clothes to see what they liked best! Oh happy days!
Your research and footage is second to none Pat. I am just grateful to have experienced the wilder days of Bkk in the late 90s/ early naughts. I remember some pretty crazy nights around soi Arab where there was a late night hip hop club (between Grace Hotel and Sukhumvit). If I am not mistaken it was on the 2nd or 3rd floor of some decrepit Chinese shophouse - and open after 2am curfew.
