    Get a Carly OBD diagnostics tool to pull the code it is throwing so you don't keep guessing what the issue is and waste money. It will come in handy. I daily drove a supercharged e92 M3 that I bought brand new, modified and still have. Car has been amazing throughout my entire ownership. When maintained well they are one of the best cars ever made.
    In your case, if I had to guess I would bet that it's the starter, especially if it's not clicking.

    Just for future a relay can be tested and bypassed within a few minutes with a multimeter to save you buying parts. Next step of you can access it would be to check your feeds and earth to the starter motor. It could be a corroded wire or bad engine earth cable if you’re lucky. If not then on a 16 year old 90k car on its original start motor it could well be that too . Let us know what it was when sorted please. If I was closer to you I’d happily come sort it for you 👍

    Had this exact same issue on my E60 M5, the cause was a bad battery! My car had a relating voltage code in the CAS and ecu, new battery, registered and started straight up!

    • @hampshirephoto

      Interesting! It wouldn’t start even on a jump pack?

    • @mikesingh7380
      @mikesingh7380 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      No, I had a intelligent jump pack on it too! Problem was the Intelligent Battery Sensor detected low voltage from the battery but does not see the extra voltage from the jump pack. You should have some codes as I say…. Reason I think this is your cluster had the transmission cog, ! Etc etc which makes me believe battery!
      Best of luck 👍

    • @Assimilator1
      @Assimilator1 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@mikesingh7380 IBS will see the extra voltage as long as you're not connecting the jump pack directly to the battery.
      Did your car's starter at least make a loud click when you tried to start it?

    • @mikesingh7380
      @mikesingh7380 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@Assimilator1I connected the jump pack to the terminals at the front of the car. Still would not start, neither was there a click from the starter. I thought the same thing; starter had given up. But many codes were stored & current for under voltage on various modules including the Cas & ecu which also stored codes ‘starter doesn’t engage’
      Cluster was showing all different errors.
      I had the battery tested which wasn’t that old showing a dead cell and was exchanged for a brand new one. Literally problem solved.

    • @Assimilator1
      @Assimilator1 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@mikesingh7380 your jump pack probably had a bad connection with the jump points, I've seen that happen quite often, even when both look perfectly clean, it's needed the clips twisted from side to side before good contact is made. I work at a BM dealer and have quite often jump started cars just fine (unless the battery is totally dead! Lol).
      Not saying it wasn't your battery, just saying why the jump pack didn't work 👍

  • @seanpaul3050

    Check engine earth strap. There is one under the engine near to the ground. (runs between the engine and the chassis) They can corrode to the point where the engine will not start. Sometimes it will snap in two, as soon as you move or wiggle it.
    Another problem area is the positive battery leads running from the battery to the front of the car. they can corrode severly at the point where they go through the body and then go under the car, due to water getting into the boot area. (remove battery and check positive leads where they go through the bodywork behind the battery) Not sure if that affects the M3 cars though. I know it affects all other E9x models.
    If none of the above, then I think it will be the starter motor.

    A dead alternator won't stop you cranking the engine, or it starting, assuming there's enough battery power left (you'd at least get a clicking from the starter if that was the case, and the dash lights would die at the same time due to lack of power).
    Really you need to scan for fault codes, this hopefully will be able to help you out.
    Common/likely choices are, starter relay (you've tried that), faulty cables or connections to the starter or a dead starter.
    Also possible (but somewhat less likely) is an immobiliser problem (although I don't think you were getting any immobiliser lights, right?), a faulty start button (even though it's doing something), wiring problem between the relay and starter.
    It's had the battery lead recall right?
    Don't assume it's the starter until you've ruled out other things.
    Btw, don't let the battery go very low or dead flat will ya, otherwise you'll be needing to replace that too!

    Read the codes but I’ll bet it’s either a power issue or your starter. The booster pack may not be enough. Fully charge your battery or borrow/swap in a new one. Failing that it’s your starter, the click your hearing is the relay working so it’s not that.

    As mentioned, I would like to know what that the fault codes tell you, and go from there.
    However, while you are at it, do have a look at the ground wire near the front of the exhaust. These can get bad and cause starting issues (I have had a similar issue, without fault codes though, which has not returned after replacing that wire). Cheap part, fairly easy to replace if you can get under the car.
