It Died On Me - Fixing My Craftsman 32cc Weedwacker Trimmer

  • My personal Craftsman 32cc Weedwacker String Trimmer (model 358.791040) started giving me issues while using it, let's see what's wrong with it.

    Craftsman 358.791040, 32cc, weedwacker, trimmer, sim-pul technology, doesn't stay running, doesn't start, pull cord doesn't retract, starter rope doesn't retract, remove trimmer shaft, remove handles, disconnect kill wires, remove clutch drum, remove clutch, remove recoil housing, test on-off switch, test on-off wires, test kill wires, test ignition coil, inspect ignition coil, remove starter recoil, clean starter recoil spring, assemble recoil spring, replace recoil rope, replace starter rope, replace pull cord, install new starter rope, install new ignition coil, set ignition gap with card, assemble trimmer head, test spark, reassemble trimmer, test run

    Good tutorial. One thing I do differently is winding the coil. I use the coil housing drum and put the outer "hook" in the slot then use my thumb to hold it down while I turn the drum in my hand until the inner "hook" is down. It seems to work better for me.

    Just off the first minute of the video, I’m guessing the coil is overheating and losing spark. Love your vids!

    Wow, excellent tutorial on repairing one of these! I never would have even considered taking something like this apart and I definitely wouldn’t have tackled that recoil spring. I wonder if the coil continuity would have changed if you hit it with a heat gun. Husqvarna outdoor products (HOP) bought up AYP / Electrolux years ago and all of the AYP part numbers have been changed to HOP numbers.

      Thanks! I knew they owned the Weedeater brand but not AYP/Electrolux as well, looks like they're out there collecting all these older product design rights.
