Nice to watch a TH-cam where the guy knows what the hell he's talking about. I'm 68, been shooting since 1971. I love my D700. Solid, intuitive, heavy enough to offer assistance in low light slow shutterspeed handheld situations. Great video Carmine. Love your background setting for the video.

I have a D850, D3s, and D700. I enjoy the D700 the most and I often use a 24-85 3.5 lens. It is an underrated sharp lens. Got the D700 with 6000 clicks for $400.

Hi Carmine, I really appreciate this video! I just bought my first camera (that wasn't a hammy down from someone else) and I went with the D700! I was able to get the body, OEM grip, charger, and four batteries for $285+$15 shipping. This video made me even more excited to use this amazing camera!

Good stuff Carmine. Ive owed 3, purchased newer, even the latest Nikon DSLRs and always returned to my D700. Decided to get the D300s and a D3s.
Found all of them with less than 2000 shutter clicks. Such beautiful cameras.... A work of art, craftsmanship we probably will never see again. Great photos and thanks for this nice video

Great review, Carmine! I picked up my D700 in 2011 for about $2,300 it is STILL my go-to workhorse for the last 11 years chugging along with 85,000+ actuations. It was Nikon's #2 camera at the time behind the D3 and considered the D3's "little brother with all of the great pro features of the D3 in the D300 body". All along I always thought the D700 was a somewhat underrated gem and never got the recognition it deserved. That's OK because I have one and I love it. The D3s and D4s look mighty tasty but I would take another D700 in a heartbeat!

my D700 did fail after about 100k clicks, five or so years of use. I replaced it with a D800e. I actually preferred the experience and file handling of the D700 though sand really miss it . Per your suggestion i have found a used one, at about 1/10th of what I paid for my original D700!

Carmine, I enjoyed your presentation on the D700, a legend. Over the years I’ve seen your name in various comments on other TH-camrs pages, and I noted you were from NYC. I was born in Brooklyn, grew up in Long Island, but have been in Jersey since 1978. In High School (72 graduate) I got my first dslrs… a Minolta Srt-101, a Fujica St901(I think) and finally fell in love with a Nikon FE2, which I had all through college. In my adult life (after raising a kid, etc) I put down the camera for a number of years..life happens…then I was dragged kicking and screaming into the digital world. My first digital dslr was a Canon Eos d20, which was stolen. Then I replaced that with a Nikon D700 which I loved, but then I was stricken with severe psoriatic arthritis, which made hand holding a dslr too painful and uncomfortable. I had to sell that , and tried the newfangled mirrorless camera, a Sony a6000. I never cared for the Sony menu system, the colors were terrible, and it just never felt like an organic extension of my hand the way that Nikons did. Once I was able to get better medical attention to my arthritic condition, I had a bit more strength in my hands and decided to try Fuji, which The Angry Photographer (Ken Wheeler) turned me on to. I had an XT2, then an XT3 for a few years. The Fujis were more easily tolerated by my hands and they felt more organic..definitely gave me a Nikon “feel”. But I always yearned to go back to Nikon..last year I purchased a Nikon Z6II and have a few Of their Z mount lenses. I’ve been happy with the Z6II…I am still in awe of the older Nikon slrs such as the D700. If memory serves me correctly, I believe they my have used a Pentax sensor in that model…the colors and rendering are very film-like. Not in the budget currently, as I’m retired and somewhat disabled, so shooting possibilities are more limited to me now. Anyway, I enjoyed your video, and you’ve gained a new subscriber. Thanks Carmine!

NIKON D700 a Compact Professional DSLR vs Nikon D3 WTF !!!!!
It's true, the Nikon D700 is an FX, full frame, 12mp, compact, all metal body, 5 fps, cf card slot, iso range 200-6400, $3000 in 2008 now it's only $350.
    *(it's a Compact Nikon D3)
Today, you can buy these all day long for $350 on Ebay with approx. 17k clicks.

Hi Carmine, great review. Many years ago Nikon published optional picture controls for the D700, D3 series and D300. They are (mostly) still about but only through the Nikon china website. The D700 ones give Portrait, Landscape and D2X colour modes. They took a a while to find and the website pages have to be translated from Chinese.

Carmine, I too bought my d700 in 2008 with the battery grip. Never ran out of battery. How long since I shot mine? 10 minutes. Not as sharp as my d850 but plenty sharp for the internet and after 15 years of use, I have gotten my moneys worth out of it. I use it for lens testing and currently speeding up my manual focus of my zeiss 85 1.4 planar for street/event on a f100 or my main camera now, an f6 that is my all time favorite camera. Love the mamiya 645 pro tl for street/ event but with topaz gigipixel ai, I can make 20" digital prints from my portra or tmax or acros shots. The f6 shots cost me about half that of the 645 shots and my zeiss/voigtlander and older nikon glass is stellar. The downside is when I develop 2 roll, have 72 shots to convert and edit. With the 645, 2 rolls on the same developing tank reel only has 30 shots. They all look alike thanks to the italian designer in 1995 who designed the f5 and several times I have intended to take the f100, f5 or f6 off my dining room table in haste and got to the shoot with the d850 by mistake or vice versa. Yes, the grip is wonderful, the entire design is fantastic and the colors that the d700 kick out are gorgeous. With a voigtlander 58 1.4 nokton, when I check the lcd one word comes to mind, wow.

Great robust very capable camera even today.
Once again, Professor, I have to complain again about TH-cam posters not letting viewers know the limited size of the media SD/CF cards that some of these older cameras can utilize. Some of these cards are hard to find in a size that they can use and you won't find them at Best-Buy or Walmart, and the local camera store is going the way of the Dodo Bird and some of the surviving good stores still have to order in a small GB card.

I bought both a D3 and D700 when I was shooting weddings and other events. The quality of both was eye opening so my D300’s were put away.
The sensors were the reason for the quality of images. The 90% viewfinder and single mem card of the D700 were easy to get used to.
The more recent Z7 which has no 3D Focus Tracking is rarely used. Does anybody else use their D3 voice recorder?

+Carmine Taverna I've heard such great things from photographers about how this camera reproduces colors extremely well. Is that when shooting in raw or JPEG format? I understand that when shooting in JPEG The camera will essentially "develop" the photo whereas in RAW you are just getting the unmastered data. Sorry for the ignorant question. I don't know a lot about photography yet.

    • @CarmineTavernaPhotography
      @CarmineTavernaPhotography  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi, great question actually. The color science in the Nikon D700 is shown, without further processing in the jpegs it produces, they are high level photographs. Also, the RAW files have the colors in them as well, but, you must pull them out in post processing software. I always say, the jpegs are marvelous "straight out of the Nikon D700".

All three models yield all different pictures. D800 is the most (too much) yellowish and requires only best lenses to shine, D600 is fine but quite flat and lifeless/boring. D700 has something in the gradient, the way color shade goes from one to another is so nice but D700 has the worst dynamic range. Their feel in hand lead me to different use.
