  • William VerMeulen, Principal Horn with the Houston Symphony, coaches NYO-USA horn player Jennifer Bywaters in Strauss's Horn Concerto No. 2.
Each summer, Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute brings together the brightest young players from across the country to form the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America. Following a two-week training residency with leading professional orchestra musicians, these remarkable teenagers not only have the opportunity to play on the famed stage of Carnegie Hall but also then embark on a tour to some of the great music capitals of the world, while serving as dynamic musical ambassadors. Would've been nice to hear the student play - from what I could make out of the 45 total seconds she was allowed to play something while he sang over it, she sounds pretty great!

You have to remember these kids are rehearsing all day for these concerts. He is not having them play much on purpose because it wouldn't be good for them later on because they still have so much to play. It would have been nice to hear more but he gave a lot of good insights

William has some really good things to say, I really like his advice! he does seem to like the sound of his voice though, I‘m sure he didn’t hear any more of what that lady played than I did here, he drowns her out with his singing, which is a pity. (.. and yes, of course Rosenkav alier is not a later work, 1912, being pretty much between the 1st concerto and the 2nd as far as years are concerned)

I guess there's a reason why he's playing with the Houston SO and not the Berlin Phil..

I guess there's a reason why he's the horn professor at one of the top schools for horn performance in the US and the main influence of most horn players, both professional and student, in the States. Don't be disrespectful. You can have your own opinions, but don't outright attack him.

@@soapk5245 I agree with you 110% he is an excellent horn player and a outstanding teacher he knows the music and the style I met him at IHS 51 he is a very nice guy , I love his Hayn 1 interpretation , he doesn't play in the berl phil because he probably likes his country and does not play an alexander😉

The whole thing is waaaaay too fast imo. His style is distinctly American, which doesn't do this piece justice. Radek does it best, no question.

You need to spend more time listening to the Dennis Brain version which has a far lighter and more playful touch than Radek. Brain tends to play more with the orchestra than on top of it. So I think Brain's interpretation is more suited to the piece. But opinions vary.
