How Peugeot Dominated the Dying Days of Group C

  • Group C sportscar racing birthed some of the greatest racing machines ever made. Icons of the automotive world like the dominant Porsche 956 and 962, the monstrous Sauber-Mercedes C9, and many, many more. But for over a decade after the introduction of the fastest class in sportscar racing, no French manufacturer was able to win their home event, the greatest endurance event in the world, the 24 hours of Le Mans.

I absolutely love Peugeot, I grew up with my dad having a Peugeot 505 station wagon, then he bought a 405 t16 station wagon and it blew the normal Mercedes, Audi and BMW drivers away. I guess my dad was just a really good driver. Unfortunately someone decides to smash this car up by forgetting to break. Then he got a Renault Espace v6, oh my that van was fast. But when the new series came out he got a Peugeot 106 GTI, us kids where grown up then and he didn't need a big car anymore.. what a hooligan that vehicle was.
I miss Peugeot making good cars, I would buy one if they had anything great now.

At the 2022 Le Mans race I bought a postcard of an illustration of this car as a memento. it was the only thing I could afford to buy! The other mementos were two pieces of confetti (one blue and one gold), debris from the Sunday Ferrari crash at the Porsche curves, and some rubber I pulled from the final curb on the track.

The WM-P88 is so absurd that might be worth its own video. The main goal of the car wasn't winning the race, but setting the speed record at Lemans, they were aware of their Twin-Turbo V6 being nothing but a mere glass cannon. The car only ran for a few laps, but it was enough to set the speed record and their mission was accomplished. The funny thing is, even if the official speed record clocked the WM-P88 at 407 KM/H, Peugeot said it was 405 KM/H. Why? In order to match with their new 4-door saloon, the 405 and use it as a publicity stunt.
Also, the rear wing of the 905 is super cool, it looks so unique.

Good video but I have to pick you up on a historical point. The driving force behind the 3.5 litre class was not Bernie Ecclestone, it was Jean Marie Balestre who was head of the then motorsport governing body FISA until 1991. At the time of group C's demise, Bernie Ecclestone was the head of FOCA, the Formula One Constructors Association and had no control over sports cars.

    • @automobilistic
      @automobilistic  ปีที่แล้ว

I think you're right about the actual positions held, but to say Ecclestone had no control over sports cars isnt true. He had far reach in motorsport. It is pretty widely accepted in most publications that have written about the death of Group C that it was Ecclestone who was the driving force. The motivation? To get Mercedes and Peugeot into F1 (it worked). Of course confirming this 100% is difficult, its an in-tangible.

Yes, and Rondeau won in 1980. Neither were Group C cars.
edit: A number of French cars have won Le Mans, Peugeot were the only ones to do so in the Group C era

Bernie Ecclestone wasn't the only one responsible for the new 1991 regulations. Mosley and Ballestre were complicit too.
The idea was to attract manufacturers to F1, sacrificing Group-C and C2 in the process.
In 1991, every team that used older cars were heavily penalizedfrom the start (except for Mazda) and didn't stand a chance.

The fastest any frog has gone forwards is 236mph in 1976 with the Renault-Alpine A442B. Unfortunately, the French have got a gearbox which could see a 300mph car but they can't figure out how to drive the car in reverse for the race. If they can figure it out they might take the white... um.. checkered flag. 🏳

I have to disagree with the looks assessment. I believe the car stunning, with the massive wing almost positioned on the next car behind the Peugeot.. Lol.. Seriously the car and the ultra modern F-16 bubble canopy give the car a futuristic look that would be at home today.

    1) 715 was a good power level, and I hope it was referred to the endurance spec. So I'm now wondering why the Peugeot was the F1 factory engine certified to be always the one underpowered, since for 300km/2hrs long races get other horse power out should not have been very difficult.
    2) some said that Todt got permission to overspend and no other manufacturer wanted to risk its reputation against your boring, vulgar maker of average mass cars of all things. Gr. C was a 'dead man walking' because FIA wanted all these constructors in F1, so everyone was happy to have the mass car manufacturer guilty for its own success.
    3) was not even born at the time but the 905B is a personal fav among those monsters.

905 os the fastest. But in reliability 787b is the best. Also during 1991 le mans this both car actually racing each other. But 905 DNF after engine issue

I agree, I think the first 905 was a much better looking car. Much less aerodynamically effective though unfortunately
