I love stephens work. I was on a 2 week cruise. Downloaded clue 1 on release day. Came back to everything kicking off. Stephen doesn’t deserve the nastiness. My self can not see the symbol. I put mine into hibernation till the storm has blown over.
I really feel sorry for Stephen, he was in no way making something that had a malicious hate symbol on it. He is getting so much nastiness from people over it and he doesn't deserve that, he is such a kind hearted soul. I was in a few groups that were making this new shawl, needless to say, I left them, too much hatred being spewd towards him
I feel badly as well for Stephen. You can hear and see how emotional this week has been - a week which was supposed to be joyous and exciting. I hope the drama settles down soon so he can breathe again.
No, no hatred at all, but you can still see and hear in his voice how deeply this situation has affected him. He obviously did not create the design with reference to that symbol, so the situation was shocking and unexpected and an emotional rollercoaster for Stephen.
What really broke my heart was, that one of the German testknitters had the same association and obviously didn´t tell the designer. She mentioned it as a reply to one knitter (who said she has an association with something she doesn´t want to see in her shawl), and I asked the testknitter, why she didn´t tell it the designer and her reply was so silly and arrogant. Later she deleted her post, my question and her reply. And she did something that I really felt bad about! The official statement is now, that nobody has seen the association before the first clue was released! I DMed Stephen on Ravelry but got no answer. This could have been prevented. Especially the pain some people felt, could have been prevented.
Actually, Stephen posted on Ravelry that he still wanted to see people’s progress and he was not asking for mass frogging!!!. I think some people are feeling nobody should knit the original clue and other people feel criticized if they are choosing to keep the clue-I still want to know what people think about pinwheel quilts-as this clue completed looks like a pinwheel-at least to me.
Hi I am in the giant bubble of what to do. I am even doing a modified version where it’s just the main pinwheel is showing but it’s just color blocks in the other areas. Which was a direction he said was acceptable… but now it is not. Even post in the Ravelry group with modifications are being deleted. I get it, his group… and I understand the purpose to pivot the mkal. However I am already half way done with the first clue and honestly scared to post it on social media because of the comments and quarreling from the community.
I feel the same way. I'm really torn. I'd like another week before Clue 2 is released because the time-pressure is real and I really wanted to try and keep up with the clues this time. I don't know what to do either. 😕
I'm keeping my modified version. I was 3/4 through. I frogged a quarter and did the second half going from the darkest to the lightest colour (other than for the outer stripes). This means I still have the pinwheel in the middle but the tiny triangles are not creating confusion. I've posted on social media but I didn't add the MKAL hashtags. Also I guess I don't have many followers... What annoys me is that it wasn't even a swastika, it was country clockwise! But I do understand that Stephen West wants to move on from the controversy.
It sounds like there are crickets in your video! Is a window open? Im going with the new Clue 1 because it can still be beautiful snd Stephen is trying so hard . Its heartbreaking what this drama has done. Lets rally around him ❤
Yes, crickets 🦗 due to an open window. I didn’t notice it until editing… I agree, we should rally around him and I’m glad so many of us are still supporting him and going in a new direction with him and this MKAL.
I am not doing the MKAL, but that has nothing to do with the controversy and everything to do with how many projects I have going on. I have utmost respect for how Stephen has handled this. He’s a good human. Stephen know you are respected and loved. ❤️
I agree, Stephen is a class act ❤. As a long-time quilter, there is a very traditional quilt block, the Rail Fence, that if you're not careful, clearly looks like the symbol in question. Maybe for that reason, when clue 1 was released I was immediately dismayed. And once you see it, you can't un-see it. So, I've slightly modifed mine. What's been most upsetting to me...i was in a couple of Facebook groups devoted to the MKAL...and there were so many comments ridiculing people who were pivoting, that I left those groups. I was just thinking now...I bet Stephen will have to go back and re-record the next 3 clue videos to reflect the change made. I hope my mod will work...if not, I'll do the one you showed because it's pretty cool 😎 😊
I watched the tutorial and didn’t see it. I thought it was so pretty. He was working geometric shapes. You won’t be able to find anything on the original now. I felt so bad for Stephen, knowing how he never meant to make it that way. I wanted to hug him.
I never updated to the Version 3 of Clue 1, and printed out the original. I’m knitting it, because I’m thinking that it likely is an integral part of the complete design. The square is boring and juvenile.
I was looking for some info about the MKAL controversy (didn't know what it was about) and I found this episode. I liked it and I ended up watching it until the end so yay! A new fun podcast subscription 😊
My yarn felted a little when I dyed it, so I haven't started Geogradient. I cussed up a storm as I was winding my third skein the second time (I always wind twice - first time is always too tight) since it tangled up so bad. I haven't started winding the 4th yet. I like the Pink Queen square, and I think I'll go with that one once I stop glaring at this skein... Personally, I still just see a pinwheel, but I can't fault what others see.
Go to thrift stores in more affluent areas! My peak favorite thrift store ever was a Goodwill in my college town that was right at the edge of an affluent area. So it got the rich "adults" cast offs and the business grads cast offs. This was 7 years ago, but they had tons of Ann Taylor, Banana Republic, J. Crew, Express, White House Black Market, Brooks Brothers, etc. I even found Allsaints and Rag and Bone. I got so many 100% wool and 100% cashmere sweaters. The yarn tend to be like cobweb weight in them though. I got a cashmere cardigan that had a hole for like $2 and frogged it, but fell out of yarn crafts and never used it. I just got into knitting this summer and I'm finally using it as a contrast color in a colorwork yoke sweater. I have 4 strands of the cashmere held together and its still thinner than the EFK fingering I'm using as the main color, but it's close enough that it works.
Yes, that's wonderful. That is what I want to do, too, and Steven asks that everyone do that. He wants a fresh start for everyone and says that the new design represents his heart radiating out. He is devastated, and I think feels that it just drags everything on forever when knitters just modify the original design rather than doing the new version that he has put out. Besides, his clue 2 has now been modified to work with the new clue one, and there is a chance that it won't work with the original clue 1 or it's modifications. I feel so bad for him. I think it has taken all the enjoyment out of it for him. I just hope everyone can get past this, and enjoy the rest of the pattern and the completed shawl.
I was invited to join a splinter group on Ravelry called, 2023 stay calm and knitalong. It was created for those of us who felt cancelled and denigrated by the MKAL2023 brigade. Take a look, there are more than 20 members as of this morning 😊
I was counting up my FOs for the year (planning on posting next week my updates) - and I’m up to 15. Two in the last week. I was so surprised. Love the rescued sweater - that was a lucky find!
Stephen has a lot of jealous distractors in the knitting world. There are indy yarn dyers who have had long poscasts blasting his designs while pushing the designs of their friends who only use their yarn. This was bound to happen. I have been watching his enemies going after him for years. It is very sad to see as he happens to be a good egg. Very generous and kind. I met him before he was famous and he hasn't changed a bit. I have multiple handmade quilt with blocks like this and as a Midwest boy i am sure that he is inspired by the same quilts.
The amount of people being hateful and virtue signalling in the ravelry thread really destroyed the mkal for me. The people that see a swastika in the pattern and demand an explanation are honestlt in the minority. It looks like a pinwheel and a lot of old quilt patterns. I don't have enough yarn to restart clue 1 and frankly, i dont like the way the new clue 1 looks. I will keep my original pattern. I guarantee nobody will think its a swastika when i wear this shawl in the future. The behavior of the "triggered" individuals and their pure vitriolic spew should be ashamed for their ugliness. I also find it disturbing that people that were encouraged to alter the original clue 1 can no longer share their works in the mkal threads, basically ruining their entire experience. The whole point of a KAL is sharing your work and experiences. Knitting is supposed to be relaxing and this is just not relaxing ay all. Im just incredibly disgusted and disappointed. :/ i disagree, the response was not good in my opinion. I feel like Stephen is doing what he thinks is right. None of this changed that i think he's a good person, just disagree with them "forbidding' the original clue after encouraging people to keep going, albeit with modifications.
Love seeing your colors for the shawl. Love seeing all your bases. FYI your shop web address isn't hyperlinked. This isn't a huge deal as the address is correct so you can just copy and paste in a new window, but this could prevent people who are in a rush from heading over
I love the version of clue 1 that you are doing. Like you, I am on clue 4 of Twists and Turns, but I don’t like it and don’t think I’d wear it. I am considering frogging it and using the yarn for Geogradient. Am I mad? I’d really appreciate your opinion and those of your followers.
If you don't like it, you should frog it. Just remember to reskein it and soak it to get the little kinks out before knitting with it. I actually like the Twists and Turns pattern and bought it after the MKAL was over and am looking forward to making it up, but it definitely isn't everyone's cup of tea.
There’s no shame in frogging something you don’t completely love. Perhaps that yarn is meant to become something different. You still have the experience of knitting the shawl and the techniques added to your skill set now, so it’s not at all a waste.
I love your crickets - such great ambient noise! Thanks for explaining the mkal controversy. Another vlogger mentioned it without explaining it - that's when I searched for and found your podcast. I checked out your website. You do use mordants, right? You don't really mention that. I *love* your "bright rainbow" offering, but it's 6 skeins of 20g each - do you have 40-50g of each?
Hi! Yes, I absolutely use mordants when necessary (which is nearly always.) I use alum sulfate to pre mordant the yarn. In the rainbow yarn the only one I did not use a mordant for is the lichen (purple) because it’s unnecessary. So for the mushroom minis I was only able to offer the 20g mini skein sets. The amount of mushrooms required in order to get those beautiful colors only allowed me to dye one full 100g skein at a time. I wanted to be able to spread out the love so I divvied the full skeins into mini skein sets so that more people would be able to enjoy the mushroom colors. If you think you would like more than 20g then you could always order two - I do believe I still have two sets of the bright rainbow in stock.
I will soon be uploading a few full skein rainbow sets in my luxe base - though these are not exclusively mushroom dyed. These will range between 6-8 100g full size skeins and would be enough yardage for many of StephenWest’s large shawls. I Hope to have them listed within the week.
After watching Stephen's most recent video, I can't imagine knitting the original. I didn't "see" anything other than a Celtic design, so I was angry and ready to quit. The new version was more like an afghan! After seeing how broken and sad he is....said he was embarassed and wished he'd never released the first one. I was heartbroken to see and feel such raw emotion. I'm now pivoting to the new version and looking at it as he described it. Love radiating from the center. I want to honor him and respect his feelings. We need more people like him in our fiber community ❤
I, too, was surprised by how basic his new design feels. However, knowing that Stephen is anything BUT basic, I’m sure once it’s part of the larger shawl it will be amazing. Seeing people’s basic squares knit up already is seeming more interesting. I’m proceeding with pink queen yarns’ version of the square- I believe this one is still acceptable for SW and it’s slightly more interesting. Also, she was an initial tester so I have confidence that it will work well with the finished shawl as she knows the full design. I agree- Stephen’s emotional video was so raw and I think most of us feel deeply for him and how this situation unfolded. Hopefully we can all hug SW with our finished shawls!
Husband sock note - I believe you’ll have some muscle memory, as well as maybe new skills learned it will make it much easier. Jump right in there and give it a go procrastinating on it makes the fear worse. (At least that’s been my experience.)
Actually, not sold out - I decided to reorganize the yarn into kits to more easily be able to shop colors that will definitely go nicely together. I should have the new Luxe listings up soon!
Thank you so much for exploring my shop! I’m really excited about the whole thing 😆 I got half the photos taken today to rework the Luxe listings and will finish tomorrow- I hope to get those back up ASAP!
Unfortunately the thousands of views are not indicative of ppl who are doing it; they're just looking for scandal or trying to take a person den. We've seen this with so many knitters or yarn folk who are well known - it's like some ppl just go looking for a reason to bully or to jusge. As IF Stephen West would DO such a controversial thing. Ppl appropriate symbols and conversations and text from their own experiences and that means there's bias, often such personal bias that noone else feels the same way but that thing, whatever it is, will hsve to be removed, despite it EVER being intended that way. Anyway... this too shall pass... and ppl will move on. Good luck with yr sock knitting for the giant lololol
I didn’t know about GeoGradient controversy, I just found out about it from you. And I am not doing the MKAL, so I was eager to see the spoilers. And the first thing I thought when I saw it - swastika, Stephen is going to hear about it. And I didn’t check on the MKAL since. Yes, the angles are different, but all people also have different backgrounds. I bet most Germans and most Jews saw it. I grew up in Russia where everybody’s grandfathers and their brothers went to World War ll, 20 million people from Soviet Union died on World War ll. It touched every family in one way or another. I grew up on World War ll movies (there was not much else available on TV) - yes, I am seeing it, too. My husband baby boomer grew up in the USA - you don’t see much of it here unless you have interest in World War ll and watch History channel. He is not seeing swastika in Clue 1, and talking about different angles and how ridiculous it is. Best answer came from my 16 year old. She said, there is definitely a swastika vibe! Of course Stephen didn’t mean it, I am just surprised that there was not a single person in his testing group who saw it.

Seriously. Knitters are a bunch of drama queens. This is why I left Ravelry. Grow up already ladies.
I agree. It is over the top.
