That little discussion you had about what Jeff Beck did was cool and all but that's what you do. Squeezing soundscapes out of the guitar with your hands is so cool. Can't wait to see you around my neck of the woods.

There’s something unique about songwriters/composer who is also adept at their instrument. Always looking for harmonies and mini melodies to strengthen the song and find hints of magic.
It’s these subtleties that I truly appreciate being broken down in this lesson.

Ariel thinks like a true musician and song composer. These embellishments are what create the magic in a song.

I love Ariel's comment at 18:00 about "It's only 5 notes, why do we have to practice every pentatonic scale in two octaves". I do this and with arpeggios, as well. All the years, it never occurred to me to break out of it. Beautiful playing, Ariel. Brett, so cool that you host these talented guitar players and strum chords to showcase their work (when you've got such amazing chops yourself). Thanks for sharing this with us.

Brett, the cool thing about your lessons when you have a guest who is from another planet is that you ask all the right questions. You're a great interviewer. This would otherwise be 99% over my head. Now it's only 98% over my head, but I feel with a few more views I can understand and maybe even implement some of it.

This video and Ariel’s with Paul David’s is pure gold dust. My takeaway is know the notes on guitar, really know them. Use them to find all the triad inversions. Use the ones threes and fives to voice lead to create melodies and don’t learn the note names in scales use their intervalic values ( nod to Tom Quayle) and that’s my practice routine for the next year😊

Difference between you and Ariel is only 30,000 hours of focused work with a looper. Don’t ignore his good finger vibrato. It’s what tells me whether someone has talent or not. Seems like finger vibrato is either you got it or you don’t. I’ve seen people that have played and taught for years that have that newb shaky finger vibrato - don’t be that guy.

I don't often comment on TH-cam videos, but exactly this is what I've been looking for and been expiring to be able to jam/improvise like this for so long! Please get Ariel to create a full blown course on this, covering everything from creating melodies, triads, voice leading and how all of this relates to the CAGED system.

    • @BrettPapa

He articulates my gripe with CAGED and 5 position pentatonic thinking: it's too much info to process for noobs. You get the same end result (although only really three shapes for triads), but easier entry points and a deeper knowledge in the end.
Got to add what an absolute dude Brett is. I feel like he could function as an asshole test. If you don't like Brett you are one.

Best video in a while, learned a lot. I learned the scales, penta, dia, then caged, and when you start to try and make music it’s very hard to put it all together. Then you realize in one shape all the chords are there but the intervals are changing and fast. Meh, that’s why it’s a life long journey. A man’s Rubix cube.

    • @BrettPapa
