hi ariel, i posted this question earlier hoping an expert like yourself could help me out... could anyone explain where the chords come from please? i understand it's in e major, so shouldn't the 5th (B) be major? how comes it works that it's changed to minor?
+ Joe Brown It's not completely an Emaj (ionian) scale. It's centered most exactly around a Amaj/F#m, making it E in the 5th (mixolydian) mode of an Amaj scale. We don't call it Amaj in this case because that is not our tonic, or root, note. It's because of how the brain processes melodies that are near each other in time that we notice the subtle difference at all.
The Captain Pete is the Key to the success of this Channel. Because he represents us, the watchers. And when he struggles , we know we would too. That makes a huge identification with Pete , Andertons , and this Channel.
I'm so impressed that you have the balls to let these lessons be recorded'..... I can't imagine the pressure you're prob feeling to "get it right" - these are just fantastic.
Exactly that! The Captain is quite a humble dude it seems.... I'm almost in the same situation as him ....trying to "see" what others see.... You can feel it's there to be found.....just getting maybe one or two missing pieces and then it will all fall into place.
Every person that plays any instrument other than percussion needs to see this and apply to their instrument. Playing melodies and make your instrument sing is the difference.
Christian, I have only just seen this, and I was thinking exactly the same thing. Keep them coming Lee....and keep playing. Having these lessons will help you immensely.
I really hope these lessons and Pete's backing track offering DON'T stop. I've been playing for a long time, but damn! I've picked up so many great nuggets of info & ideas. Thanks!!
The fact that the Captain makes mistakes is such a powerful message to all those guys who want to learn and think that because they don't get it the first time, they will never be able to get it. Great lesson and very inspiring! Thank you!!
That was really cool to hear the immediate difference in musicality during the singing exercise, I'm gonna have to try that out soon... Great video guys!
I love this series. I’ve been an instructor for a while and watching students grow is so much fun. Keep it up Lee. Don’t be locked into the “too old” trope for anything. I’ve watched your progress, as have we all and it’s noticeable. It’s not easy, keep it up brother. As an added note, my wife picked up the bass a couple years back. She wasn’t confident, but she was persistent. She’s now an astonishingly good bassist and gets better all the time. She wasn’t too old to learn and grow neither are you. Enjoy the learning, don’t be put off by other people’s current ability or knowledge, be glad that you’re fortunate enough to be surrounded by it. Soak it up man.
Lee’s come on massively in these lessons. Even just in his understanding of stuff. I think I’m at a similar level of a ability (in terms of “theory”) to Lee and these lessons have helped me more than anything I’ve ever tried. Thanks guys and keep at it Lee.

Ariel is such a classy player and a good teacher. It's also nice that his view on things reaffirms some of the ideas I've had floating around my head about guitar playing.
What great analogies Ariel gives. I really like his method of teaching. Thank you, Lee, for putting yourself in that awkward spotlight so we all can benefit along with you, and asking all the questions we are all too embarrassed to ask. Awesome video!!
These videos are SO helpful. I loved Ariel as a guitar teacher. Such great insight! Thanks for doing this. And to the captain: respect for getting out there and put yourself in the spotlight. Your "struggle" is actually very helpful for others to watch.
Good Heavens! That intro was superb. I could watch Ariel play all day long and the part explaining arpeggios was a big help. I feel the Captain's pain of being an older player lamenting not taking theory seriously when we were younger.
I think this video highlights the main ideas that run through any guitarists' head. meaning we know we're improving because all of a sudden we can hear and play the exact idea we thought about the second before we hit the note(s). anyone watching this should feel glad they didn't give up because progress shows in subtle ways. never all at once
Absolutely love these and Pete’s lessons. I’ve been stuck in a rut for so long and these have helped. Also, huge kudos to the Captain for doing these lessons. So hard to display flaws publicly. Keep it up guys.
I am SO impressed that Lee allows himself to be filmed doing this. Fair play to him. Also - he sounded WAAAAAY better when he 'sang' what he was trying to play. Much more musical.
Lee’s playing has already improved over this series! The fact that he’s conscious about what he’s playing now more is making him better. Also, that intro by Ariel killed me lmao
An absolute eye opener for somebody that is new and wants to progress..Thanks guys for such an inspirational lesson..Keep up the good work Lee your playing is getting awesome !!
Lee, your playing is fucking light years from where it was when I first starting watching. These lessons are amazing and you’ve got balls for letting these be recorded directly. Thanks for sharing man, enjoy the journey!
Whoa, singing (or whistling) along is blowing my mind! Im not always playing the notes in my head, sometimes my fingers are running the show. Thanks guys!
This is great & he's a great teacher. His point around 15 min is so important -- *hearing* what you're up to on the fretboard. It's so easy to lapse into a tactile focus where you're just feeling your way through scale patterns.
Break out of the boxes, arpeggiate the chords, think in terms of intervals... I've heard all that explained before. But how do you bring that all in an organic way that you can relate to 'feeling' and intuition? I believe this lesson answered that question. Ariel is undoubtedly an inhumanly talented musician but he's one heck of a great teacher too. So so so good. I appreciate that Lee put himself out there in all his vulnerability. That helped immensely too. But he did often hinder Ariel from explaining a concept wholesomely. Just as Ariel was about to drive a point home, the Captain would steer the ship in a whole new direction! Still, this is possibly one of the best lessons I've ever watched. There were so many KABOOM moments. I believe it opened many doors for me. It's gonna take a lot of work but I finally have a sense of purpose and direction. I am so eager now to make a million million mistakes because I know they'll make me a better musician and player. Ariel and Lee, thank you so so so much for this. If ever you hear about a middle-aged guitarist out of Bhutan finally make a mark, know that you guys made a significant contribution in his musical journey.
Ariel Posen is a great musician. I highly rate his ability and the soulful expression in his playing. The bonus is that he is able to communicate concepts clearly.
I love how Lee develops these young men and gives them a spotlight to develop themselves and their careers, showcases their talent and turns them into successful human beings before sending them off into the world to learn to fly on their own. He's a great man and i'm sure a great father...
Very cool video. Much respect to the Captain for being able to do this in front of an audience! This is totally going to help me improve my playing as well.
While I was studying electronics in school, many moons ago, I had to learn a great deal of mathematics. For a brief, shining semester or two, calculus became a language for me, and I was able to write about motion through time at a very elementary level, including pictures. I will never forget that experience, nor the amount of time and effort to get to that point. Lee and Ariel, thanks so much for taking this lesson in that direction - "language" in whatever modality is our purest form of self expression, which is why I love music so much. I just wish I was more interested in guitar in my youth.
Lee I’m exactly where you are. Love these lessons because it hits home so much. Thank you for keeping these going. Who cares if you make mistakes because you are making progress! Great stuff!
Love this series and Ariel is a champ as always! I feel you Lee, but videos like these inspire and motivate me to keep working on making music. And I’d be a happy man to have some of the Captains’ licks in my fingers!
Great video lesson. Playing for years and years but been really lazy and am to old to put the time into learning scales over and over...Downloaded the backing track and sat playing my home made Strat and the video over and over.Been here all day enjoyed it that much. More like this please.
