    For anyone watching this, I would definitely recommend separating the brine shrimp and eggs, and not feeding it with the salt water that came from the hatch. Not only is it salt water which could harm any plants that you have, but it includes all of the waste from the brine shrimp hatching and molting. It matters.
    I separate my brine shrimp with a sieve and put them into a small container with seasoned water from one of my fish tanks, and freeze whatever I have left over in mini ice cube trays so they're always available and I don't have to hatch every day. The reality is that frozen BBS and live BBS, from a nutritional perspective, are identical.

    I used to feed without screening and with salt water. Found Cory fry losses were higher which I assumed was salt intolerance. Have definitely had higher mortality rates when there’s a lot of unhatched cysts in the water. Now I use a Ziess seive and rinse well and have way better survival rates. Potentially some fish such as guppy’s and rainbows may do better with the added saltwater.
    Just my experience
    With them.
    Also I hatch in hot water cupboard which gives very high hatch rate at 36hours.

    Another Improvement you can do: If your water is very soft, then add baking soda or other KH/pH stabilizers. The metabolism of the brine shrimp can cause a pH drop, which they dont like.
    Also: Look which specie of brine shrimp you got. There are different species with different requirements of salt concentration.

    They're not exactly the same thing as Sea-Monkeys. They are very similar. Sea-Monkeys have been cross bred to be bigger, stronger, and more hearty. They're basically hybrids between brine shrimp and something else. Maybe they were just line-bred for specific traits. But, either way, there is a difference.

Can you please provide us with an idiot's guide to brine shrimp without assumptions that we already know what you are talking about?

    • @michaela-be4le
      @michaela-be4le 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Brine shrimp are tiny crustaceans that are found in higher salinity waters. The saltiness (aka specific gravity)is usually 0.025 .
      The dried eggs can be kept refrigerated for more than a year.
      To hatch the eggs you will need a specific gravity tester ( a good fish store should carry these), clean chlorine free water, salt like sea salt or rock salt, aeration of course and a vessel to hatch the eggs in.
      This vessel ideally should taper towards the base. This is primarily to encourage better water movement and hence oxygen levels in the hatcher.
      I first started with inverted 2 litre plastic soda bottles with the cap still on of course. I now use triangular 3 gallon glass hatchers.
      Aeration should be sufficient to disturb the entire surface of what ever you decide to use as a hatcher.
      Set it up in the morning...add the salt water (0.025 specific gravity S.G.) and eggs. One rounded teaspoon ( not heaping ) of eggs per gallon. Turn on the aeration and observe if the eggs are moving around sufficiently.
      After several minutes, eggs will build up on the glass just above the water surface. Simply use a plastic spoon to scrape them back into the water. You'll have to do this once or twice during the hatching period.
      The best yield comes after 48 hours. So that means if you want to feed your fish brine shrimp daily, you'll need to set up a second hatcher 24 hours after the first one. The next morning in other words.
      Hope this helps you.

    • @michaela-be4le
      @michaela-be4le 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      When ready to harvest the hatcher, turn off aeration and let rest for 5 minutes or so. The brine shrimp will settle depending on the light situation, at the bottom, at the top or both. I only depend on natural morning light so my baby brine usually settle at the top. I use a clear hard plastic tube stuck into some air line to syphon the hatched shrimp.

  • @AnthonyLezama-vv7ip
    @AnthonyLezama-vv7ip 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    My hatcher gives a yield of 95% or higher hatch rate.
    In actual harvested volume, that means every teaspoon of eggs should yield 2 - 2.25 teaspoons of baby shrimp as bbs at 48 hrs are a bit more than twice the size of the egg.
    A specific gravity of 0.025 is advisable using a density of no greater than 1 rounded ( not heaping ) teaspoon of eggs per gallon ( British gallon not U.S gallon ) of solution.
