Olongapo Subic Bay Philippines Walk 🇵🇭

  • Just a walk outside of the walking gate/bridge of the old Subic Naval Base to show what Olongapo City Philippines looks like today. People who haven't been here in years will not recognize the other side of the bridge going out the gate to Olongapo City, much has changed.

I was assigned to VF 96 - Fighting Falcons. Aboard CVA 61 USS Ranger, CVN 65, USS Enterprise, 1964-1966.
All roads were not paved. Remember the river bridge and the kids diving for coins. All bars and jeepnees filed with girls ,Sailors and other military. "Fun times"

Stationed there from 1972 -75 as an Armed Forces Policeman. Thanks for the video but really sad that Magsaysay Drive is not thriving. I can remember when 2 aircraft carrier battle groups were in port there at the same time. They closed the gate (outgoing foot traffic) after 17,000 sailors/marines exited the base. Po was rocking whenever the fleet was in. It would be nice if little Marcos would allow the bases to return as before.

I noticed the streets are nice and clean. I was there several times in 1961, as the ships we were on were in and out of Subic . I was in the Marines, we were on 5 different ships during my enlistment, we went to several country's. The Cuban block aid was our last one. Some will remember some of the ships.~~~RENVILLE~MONTROSE ~~MAGOFIN ~~PICKAWAY~~CAVALIER~~On the Renville 3 different times. We were stationed on Okinawa, the 3rd. Marine Div. But Olongapo is the City I'll never forget, Bars galore, the pretty girls were actually hanging out the windows and calling to us. Thanks for another great video~USA

I was stationed in Subic Bay from 1983-86 and assigned to Company A Marine Barracks. Magsaysay Drive was all night clubs, bars, and Restaurants. What a change looking at your video. I will always remember the Bridge leaving the base and the smell of S@$! River, and the kids diving from their bunker boats when coins were tossed in the water. The building to the left after the bridge was a furniture store and a large night club called Rock Tracks.

I was stationed at VRC-50 from 85-87. Looks totally different with all the store fronts. All of those were bars and restaurants. Good thing there weren't cell phones back in the day. It is a lot cleaner than it use to be. Traffic went both ways on Magsaysay. Clubs on Magsaysay were Cal-Jam, D-bird, Rolling Stone, Mariposa, 168 and the Cork Room for a quiet beer. Another stationdito notable bar on Gordon Ave was T's tavern and Slim's was on Hansen st. Just to many to list and we drank to much MOJO, Bullfrog and San Magoos.

I also secured the Fence lines on Subic Bay Naval Base on Devil Dog Patrols in a Jeep with another Marine. We were Armed with a 45 Cal. Pistol, and a 12 Gauge Riot Shot Gun to keep the Base Secure back in 1977-78. I searched Vehicles, and People at the Main Gate going into Olongapo. I still have Many Photos of the Base, and out in town from back then. It use to be called the City of Neon Lights, and Night Clubs! I had three homes out in town i rented. One was for me, and my Girlfriend, the others were for my Marine Friends to come visit. I slept on base though. I was at NAS Cubi Pt in late Nov thru Dec 69 with a damaged A-6 Intruder. We didn't have any money at all due to a snafu with our pay records. Barely had enough change to wash clothes and only went to town a couple of times when the fleet was out, kinda quiet then. We had to gather up all the change among us ( I had a crew of 4 or 5) and wash all our clothes in one machine. Most lasting memory is the poverty I witnessed. Kids diving into water that was basically raw sewage just to retrieve a few coins.

I spent some time in Olongapo in 1972. I was stationed on a Destroyer that got damaged off of the North Vietnam coast by 2 mines, and towed back to Subic Bay and was decommissioned around December 1972. I was there in late July and in September I got an early out and came home. I believe it was not long after I left that there was a huge fire that wiped out most of the bars and hotels.

If talking about Philippines in general , I'd say yes 1200 doable but all depends on your life style. You can easily find decent place to rent and food depending on your taste is cheap. Health is always a factor as well. We have only spent 1200 in a month for two of us but we have no rent. We average 1500 a month but again for 2 people. I always recommend 1500 as a sweet spot budget but 1200 is doable.
