Statue of Liberty face has such an easy fix with only existing parts, just replace the shield with a 1x2 flat plate with two 1x2 curved angled pieces below it. The front profile is the same shape as the shield, but the side profile is rounder and looks much more natural. You can harvest the parts from the rest of the model and fill in the gaps with extra pieces without any notable issues.
Jang is the modern version of bob ross to me. I loved bob Ross for his wholesome and optimistic way of speaking. And Jang is so much like that. Truly one of the best voices on TH-cam
Contrary to some of the comments I’ve seen here, I like the fact that Lego are making art sets of real paintings. I like the idea of having my own little collection of real paintings in my home. I much prefer them to the other random novel art sets like Milky Way galaxy.
The great wave and starry night are beautiful on my wall. Did not pick up this set, kinda freaks me out too much lol. I think the landscapes will always look better then portraits with Lego imho
the pacing of this review is great! so relaxing and yet still concise. I know you have been experimenting a lot with your format as of late and as a long time viewer I think you nailed it here :)
Fixing the mouth sticker print, and the forehead corner on the upper left side, absolutely improves the face a significant amount, I personally 100% agree. Now, I’m very much looking forward to your alteration to improve those two (minor) issues. If those modifications are cheap and easy - this set will change and definitely get on my radar. Interestingly, I had a very similar issue with the Statue of Liberty Lego set. I didn’t like the head/face in particular; the face issue kind of ruined it for me. And I never saw a fix that was good enough in my opinion, so I never got it - though I had the chance to get it on sale a couple of times. This Mona Lisa set has the same sort of issue…
Have always thought I didn't mind that Lego sets look like they're Lego sets, and while I appreciate some attempt at looking more realistic I don't mind that they're not perfect in that regard. Honestly I think this achieves that. You're not going to mistake it for something not made of Lego, yet it's still really clear what it's made to represent. I kind of like it actually and am seriously considering it.
For me, it's the nose that throws it off. Without the nostril, it only has the tile to suggest the nose is there. It needs that darker shade of the nostril to fill in that blank area. And I definitely agree the mouth needs to curve at the edges.
Great review! I remember your original reaction and to date is one of my favorite moments on your channel! lol I do agree that there's a little bit of creepiness to it, but that part at the end got me!!! Now I'm scared!
Nice review! One thing you could try to fix the forehead corner is swapping out that hard 45° angle for a 2x2 macaroni tile. That might make it look more natural.
Thank you for this review. I was surprised that I really for the most part love this set. And it really shows what you can do. A great idea for a customisable set. 😊
With your earlier reaction I am amazed that you bought two of them. Personaly I love it. Fun build and it looks great when it's ready. I'm hoping the scream is next. They would work great next to each other.
Imagine they did a minifigure to go with it 😂 They should do that with all the art sets honestly. Get a boatman with the Great Wave Off Kanagawa, Lisa with the Mona Lisa, the girl with Girl With Balloon (banksy) etc
Great review, because you had me much more interested in watching than I might have been. I thought the face was hideous, but I was amazed at what an improvement removing the mouth made!
I hate to say it...but I think these type of portraits look best with 1X1 tiles. I agree, they're literally painful to build. I've seen SO many amazing portraits using the 1X1 MO at brick cons tho. Hats off to the guys with the patience and pain tolerance to put those masterpieces together 🤘😮
Thing about the 1x1-a-thons though is that anyone can do them. Take any picture, size it way down, reduce the color depth, and then just copy the pixels. It's like color-by-numbers or following a diamond "painting" or water-fuse bead template. The end result may look very nice, but the creation is just a matter of patience & thickness of fingertip skin 😅
I've been considering buying this piece but something seemed off about it, thank you for putting it into words. Still on the fence though, it's hard to match the Great Wave.
Couldn’t agree with it looking perfect with those two finger placements covered. I remember thinking upon reveal that the forehead juts out a bit too much.
I think this is an amazing likeness for a Lego depiction of the Mona Lisa when taking into account that it's going to have to be *somewhat* affordable *and* not a flat 2D plane of tiles. Unfortunately i think a flat 2D plane of tiles was the way to go for a Lego depiction of the Mona Lisa, if one attempted the effort in the first place.
The mouth is such a small thing that could've easily been fixed. You're already making a printed piece so why not get the print right? I do wish the nose showed a bit more of the curves but at that size, I think that's impossible without making new tile pieces or making the nose look too big
Thats pretty cool, though not so much price wise I'll skip, as I mostly collect star wars but sadly closing my wallot for a while not getting much hours at work lately at john deere until I'm back to having regular 10 hour shifts as much as I want the new ucs jabas sail barge I am not paying 500 bucks for it.
You know, I really hated this when I first saw it, but it's grown on me. I think I'd enjoy making and displaying this after all. Did they tweak the face before they officially put it out? Seems better. Edited to add: would love to see a video with your ideas for a face you're happy with.
I have to say, while I hated it with a passion when ... unveiled (heh), and I agree the forehead is an issue, I think the mouth is brilliant. Hear me out - it IS flat, strictly speaking. BUT, add the edge between the corner pieces on the right, and it turns into a cheeky half smile! Works for me 😊
Cool! Way larger than the real Joconde in Paris! Signore DaVinci would be proud. Isn't it funny that it's an oil painting? Since Lego ABS plastic is petroleum. 🎨🤓
Well, it was either this or Alarmo. Hehe. Tbh that frame is excellent, makes me think of just buying it for the frame and building something else instead. Wish the great wave off Kanagawa had such a frame
Two things come to my mind when I see the face of this Mona Lisa in Lego... Vigo the Carpathian from Ghostbusters 2 and the "restoration" of the Ecce Homo (Behold the Man) painting that became a legendary meme! XD
You know what would have been nice? Give us multiple options for the face. It's already $100, I'd have paid an extra $10 or so to get an all blank face, the one they went with, and then alternate parts with classic Lego minifig features. The set is already unabashedly LEGO in its approach, so why not go all the way, and give us that little extra detail to really sell it?
I wasn’t impressed with the set when I first saw pictures, but almost in an impressionistic way, looking at it from further away it really comes together. The closer you get the easier it is to knit pick, but hanging on a wall I think it would look pretty nice. I’m a little worried that a single wall hook might not be sufficient to support its weight without an anchor of some kind.
Anything more than a few ounces hung from drywall should be secured with properly selected & installed hardware (toggle bolt, push-in anchor, whatever is rated appropriately to safely hold more weight than the object itself). Of course you could find a stud and screw into that, but most folks would rather mount stuff exactly where they want without worrying about frame spacing.
I find it always amazing how the Human eye and brain works in terms of faces. I can´t tell what is wrong with it, it just feels off for me. And it would bother me too. They should have gone with a Minifig Face as an Option imho.
02:24 I thought the old mosaic style is great, but they overpriced the sets waaaaay too much! They would almost have been better selling the black 16x16 technic block pieces and the parts for the frames and everything separately as a kind of canvas set. Then you buy whatever you want to put on them separate- like 1x1 plates or tiles for a regular mosaic (I’ve used transparent 1x1s stacked together to create black and white mosaics- several stacked giving you a sort of white colour, single stacks being a dark grey), or slope 30s to create a lenticular mosaic pattern, or doing like the recent Milky Way set and using a variety of pieces as mosaic pieces! 🤷 Or going further and doing stuff more like the Mona Lisa or even the Spider Man art set and selling parts packs to do that kinda thing.
Real Mona Lisa: 🙂 Lego Mona Lisa: 😐 If you can't do it right, don't do it at all. The frame is alright. Even uniform in colour, how did they manage that?
Why are people surprised that it looks creepy ? The original painting is unsettling. To me, this is peak Lego. So impressive looking ! I would love to build this, but I wouldn’t know what to do with it or where to hang it. 😂
I actually really like it. People are just too serious and grumpy these days. Think outside the box and have fun with it. Like add some googly eyes, teeth, red clown nose etc..
I'm glad you like it! Is it wrong though for absolutely anyone in the world to have a slightly different opinion than you about subjective factors of a mass-produced box of plastic? I mean I call this thing "95% great" -- does it make me a "too serious and grumpy" person to dislike 5% of a thing that is essentially a grown-up children's puzzle? Let people have thoughts that differ slightly from your own, eh?
Very similar to the Statue of Liberty, almost entirely peak but with a really iffy face. But with no obvious way to make it better
The obvious fix is to give her a normal classic lego face and drop the realism attempt
Honestly not a bad comparison to make
@@sssspider yeah yeah, still a bit odd it didn't come out like that out of the box.
Maybe a way to get the shield in that color though. Not bad
I actually liked both of these sets as is.
Jang looking more and more like Bob Ross daily 😂
Jang is the modern version of bob ross to me. I loved bob Ross for his wholesome and optimistic way of speaking. And Jang is so much like that. Truly one of the best voices on TH-cam
I didn't notice the hair line originally but now you mentioned it I can't unsee it.
Great Review as Always
Am i the only one confused by the mirrored Mona Lisa in the background?
“Ohh, that’s why they didn’t do it. It looks even worse” 😂😂😂
"I'll mess around in Photoshop. I'll mess around with the real thing."
I wouldn't do that if I were you, the people at the Louvre get real angry. ;P
They've captured Peter Steele perfectly.
Contrary to some of the comments I’ve seen here, I like the fact that Lego are making art sets of real paintings. I like the idea of having my own little collection of real paintings in my home. I much prefer them to the other random novel art sets like Milky Way galaxy.
The Frame is the only thing I would want and recommend. Lego should make a bunch of different frame designs and sizes.
Why not make her with a classic LEGO yellow smiley? :p
I love it
The great wave and starry night are beautiful on my wall. Did not pick up this set, kinda freaks me out too much lol. I think the landscapes will always look better then portraits with Lego imho
When I first saw this I didn't like it, but seeing it now up-close I actually think they did a good job with it.
The frame looks so good, from certain points it reminds me to a lot of stuff I saw in a museum, also, very surpriced it comes with a "eyeless" option
4:52 Gnajbricks would be proud
Ah yes, Picasso's Mona Lisa
There's mona Lisa lots of gold quite scary awesome review jang 👍
the pacing of this review is great! so relaxing and yet still concise. I know you have been experimenting a lot with your format as of late and as a long time viewer I think you nailed it here :)
Hahahaha it’s so funny. So bad. What were they thinking 😂😂😂
Wow. There are some things that just lend themselves to Legofication. Spaceships, for example.

This Mona Lisa set has the same sort of issue…
It looks like she got her wisdom tooth removed and her left cheek is swollen.
The set would have been absolutely atrocious without that beautiful frame.
0:16 But when??!
Have always thought I didn't mind that Lego sets look like they're Lego sets, and while I appreciate some attempt at looking more realistic I don't mind that they're not perfect in that regard. The Gold Frame Is Amazing , Especially With the Color Gold LEGO Used
The curving slopes make it look like her forehead got stung by a wasp. LOVE that frame though!
I might pick it up for a parts pack when it’s on sale.
Honestly, I really would have preferred it just having the classic Lego smile lol I think that would have been pretty cute tbh
Costco already had this on sale for $75
For me, it's the nose that throws it off. Without the nostril, it only has the tile to suggest the nose is there. It needs that darker shade of the nostril to fill in that blank area. And I definitely agree the mouth needs to curve at the edges.
That ending bit really made me laugh

Reminds me of Vigo from Ghostbusters 2

That is a lot of gold Lego.
I think that is the only reason to get this set.
Great review, because you had me much more interested in watching than I might have been.
I thought the face was hideous, but I was amazed at what an improvement removing the mouth made!
Can you switch out the square mouth piece for two horizontal rectangles so there is a thin line continuing?
I think it looks fantastic, not creepy at all. In fact, I kind of want the set now, when I was indifferent previously.
Haha the Glados jumpscare at the end got me
10:02 the piece count is a reference to the year the painting was made!
It has a nice color pop I appreciate with the way the bricks blend! That's nice

@@JANGsLEGOreviewsI'd say there are some nice building techniques in the Mona Lisa. That's a definite plus imho. 😅👍
I agree with you. Why did they give her a Minecraft villager mouth 🙈😭🤣
Finally, The Jang and La Giaconda, together at last!
As always great review mate 😊
Great to hear your thoughts, Jang!
I think it looks better with the eye prints.
6:22
Happy Halloween
I think the face is great! Not sure how they could have done it better.
I've been considering buying this piece but something seemed off about it, thank you for putting it into words. Still on the fence though, it's hard to match the Great Wave.

To me that 1/4 circle piece next to the mouth makes it kinda look like a smile to me so to me it’s not too bad .
Nothing, what a 2inch brush and some added happy little trees cannot fix...😉
I think it's better to display the artwork on an easel stand rather than holding it. Great review, thank you!
You know, I really hated this when I first saw it, but it's grown on me. I think I'd enjoy making and displaying this after all. Did they tweak the face before they officially put it out? Seems better. Edited to add: would love to see a video with your ideas for a face you're happy with.
How ould it look with classic lego minifig smile?

Actually costco is selling this for about 75 dollars only. Great deal
Cool! Way larger than the real Joconde in Paris! Signore DaVinci would be proud. Isn't it funny that it's an oil painting? Since Lego ABS plastic is petroleum. 🎨🤓
Thank you for reviewing, and high quality closeups. I was interested but at least I don't have to buy it now. 🙂
JANG, thanks for your work. Great review!)
Well, it was either this or Alarmo. Hehe.
Tbh that frame is excellent, makes me think of just buying it for the frame and building something else instead. Wish the great wave off Kanagawa had such a frame
I actually kinda wish they had done just the classic Lego smiley face instead of recreating the actual face lol, would have made it more distinct
Can you do a tuxedo cat review please I really want to see you build it and review it
Two things come to my mind when I see the face of this Mona Lisa in Lego... Vigo the Carpathian from Ghostbusters 2 and the "restoration" of the Ecce Homo (Behold the Man) painting that became a legendary meme! XD

Thank you for this great revieuw but... now i am very curious about the story of the 2th, and mirrored, set. 😂😂
Another excellent review. I love everything about it apart from the face
I wasn’t impressed with the set when I first saw pictures, but almost in an impressionistic way, looking at it from further away it really comes together. The face reminds me quite a bit of the Great Sphinx.
I might get this for the parts, especially the gold
Nougat. Thank goodness. You said it.
I find it always amazing how the Human eye and brain works in terms of faces.
I can´t tell what is wrong with it, it just feels off for me. And it would bother me too.

This Mona Lisa painting has become the meme of Jang's Twitch channel. 😅
They went and gave her the C-3PO expression.
I got so very far, and then the last few seconds nearly broke me out of my stoic watching of the video….
I love it, the more I look at it. I might actually get this.
I just got it for 45.- on sale. Then it's acceptable for me (for the pieces)🙂
$75 at Costco!
Why are people surprised that it looks creepy ? The original painting is unsettling. To me, this is peak Lego. So impressive looking ! I would love to build this, but I wouldn’t know what to do with it or where to hang it. 😂

The set is so close to being amazing.
As an art historian I agree with your assessment! Please post your solution(s) I would love to see them while I consider buying it.
It looks good from far away on my phone screen 😅
I actually like the eyes
From afar it looks very good. Main problem is the mouth, horrible, why not do it like the eyes? It feels like Joy brickheadz with no smile... 😢
Appreciate you looking at it with a critical eye. I think it looks great. Just don’t have a good reason to buy it
