I doubt he knew, sadly (or… I don't know if that qualifies for a "sadly"). They probably tried reaching out to SE with the poll results back then and got a no.
And now, since the KH collections have dropped on PC (and Xbox, I suppose? Never had an Xbox console) and were going to get onto the Switch (albeit as cloud versions), and they also included previously Nintendo-exclusive games, and since it was the final DLC pack of the possibly final (or at least "Ultimate") Smash game, they decided to go along with it. It also took Disney's approval, so getting not only SE onboard, but Disney as well, must've been harder than getting two Microsoft-owned characters.
I don't think Nintendo ever needs to beg companies to have their characters in Smash. Everyone loves it and it's the one of the best ways to get exposure for your IP and sell your games. It would not surprise me at all if SE were the ones to reach out first.
@@AltairEgo1 They did for Cloud and Sephiroth. They famously had trouble getting stuff related to Final Fantasy in the game because Square is so protective of their IPs.

Honestly, the fact that the Mad Man himself pulled out Sora to bring him into "smash", is an exploit that cannot be reproduced... Sora is kind of a legal right's hell personified. And he did it. Sakurai literally went, and destroyed the walls of reality to make him join the Family. What a magnificent way to end the cycle, and a great testimony of his passion, and madness combined... You can rest now great man : you rised from legends to gods, you and all your team.
Edit : also, I love that it was up to Mario ( Nintendo ) to seize a flame ( player's passion, aha) to find the key ( Disney's authorisation ), to open the path to Sora ( . . . The Hype ). Now that's awesome.
The "Mad Man" didn't, Nintendo did. According to Sakurai Nintendo chooses characters and negotiates with third parties.

I think when he said he was shocked with his surprise act, it was a representation of the time that Nintendo told him that Sora was available for use. I have a feeling ... he puts alot of effort on this reveals that you can feel its creator touch on everything...
It's not as difficult as you might imagine. There were separate interviews with Sakurai, Nomura, and someone from Disney and they all said they'd be willing to, but weren't sure the others would. All it took was getting them in the same room.

It was a beautiful ending. Even the music was like a happy goodbye, but his presence along with that song is a hope that he will keep the fire lit along with all those before him (how I see it given that he was summoned from the last flame)😁

@@Fisher1941 Cloud gaming, well... The good is that you can run stuff that's way higher spec than the system is technically capable of. So, like, KH3 won't be graphically downgraded visually at all. The bad is that you technically don't own anything - you're basically buying a license, not any actual ownership of the game, and they're running a game on a server somewhere and streaming it to you when you play it. Ten, fifteen years in the future, whenever they shut down the eventual server it's on, you own nothing and don't have the game to go back to at all.

I got so many fighters from many games I enjoy in 1 epic game I never been prouder to be a smash player.
Sora, Cloud, Link and Hero are basically a boy band comprised of Japanese rpg heroes.
I've never in my life touch a single KH game nor have the intention of playing any of them in the future, but man, i enjoy so much seeing people being happy of Sora making it into the game at the very last chance, Sora being the last character is a great send off.
It's an incredible franchise mate!
And makes perfectly sense to end with KH. The world of light, the undying light it was the keyblade!

I think this, above all else, puts an end to the "are video games art?" debate. They absolutely are, and this is Sakurai's magnum opus.
This was truly amazing. I'm not the biggest KH fan, but I think Sora is a perfect candidate for smash. I have had so many good memories with this game, and this has been quite a journey.

I didn't see it as a Tabuu thing, it saw it as Smash light faded, the characters lost their spirit. In the end, all toys go back to the toy box. But that last little flame remained, remained and was enough to awaken Mario.

I'm not a KH fan and the way that music hit just sealed the deal. The key that that song is in tugs at your heart, especially given the gravity of this character for the fans and this being the Smash finale. Watching this particular reaction video made me cry. This excited so many people across the globe.
When I saw that key chain, I screamed so loud and jumped around until my legs gave out. I am not ashamed to admit that I nearly cried.

I feel like there's a deeper message behind the shot of Mario shaking hands with Sora... It isn't just Mario welcoming Sora into SSB with the entire roster in the background. That shot, I feel, is Sakurai saying "I did it Iwata-san. You told me to do what I could, and to do it to my fullest potential. Well, look at what I could do... The final mission you gave me, the promise I made you, has been fulfilled."

Lol Sora was a sweet innocent child for half of his career. He was born in 2002 just like I. Sora has grown up just like the rest of us, what a good series kingdom hearts is. It’s first entry is still impressive today👍

This is why Smash is still my favorite franchise, even though I barely get to play it anymore. I've never played Kingdom Hearts, I didn't want Sora as a character in the game, but just seeing the reveal and seeing how overjoyed his reveal made so many people caused me tear up anyway. He may not have been the final character I really wanted, but seeing how excited and happy he made everyone, how can I complain? I'll miss the hype cycle, miss looking forward to the next Smash character reveal, but I think what I'll really miss most is just getting to see these presentations with Sakurai. He's always so fun to watch and his passion is just so wonderful. I loved how happy and excited he seemed in this final presentation.

I actually did go all the way from middle school to high school during smash ultimate and what a journey it has been. It is sad to see Sakurai go but I'm glad he can finally rest for a bit. I remember first really getting into the game around the time Hero and Banjo were announced. So many memories of watching reactions, playing with friends, and speculation. Truly amazing times

Coincidentally, the update Sora releases in is 13.0.0, releases 13 days after his reveal, and the Kingdom Hearts series itself holds a strong connection to the number 13, primarily in the form of the recurring antagonist group of Organization XIII.
He's also the 13th DLC if you count Piranha Plant and Mythra.
We cry from the stories that touch us the most profoundly, and there were so many stories and experiences that all led to this. It’s almost too overwhelming.

I am super happy to have Sora in the game finally. He is the perfect Smash character. I think someday they need to make Smash an even 100 fighters, and add in the last few big missing characters like Waluigi and Crash, etc, and then that’s it forever.

We finally did it. I didn't cry watching it, but I definitely got in my feelings after seeing my boy flow thru the skies gracefully.
I still remember playing KH on the ps2 for the first time when it was released and when Melee was still fresh on the GC. It's so nice to see Sora in Smash now. From a 12 year old kid playing KH to now a 33 year old man. These games really become a part of your life.

Same, and I’ve never even played a KH game so I wasn’t even attached to Sora at all. Yet I still shed a tear or two, mainly for those I know who have wanted him for a long time.
Sora getting revealed is exactly like all the older players felt in Smash Brawl when Sonic and Snake were announced, especially sonic. For us who grew up IN the console wars between nintendo and sega Sonic being in smash was a fever dream and a half.

I think, seeing kind of a quick recap of Sora having a parallel adventure through the worlds in Smash, like some sort of flashback memories of him doing it all over again with these video game licenses, really makes that moment really hit home.

I'll be honest and say that I had zero interest in Sora being in Smash, but seeing so many extremely happy and positive reactions from tons of people has made me really glad he got in. I'm a little bummed that my picks won't be in, but gameplay wise Sora looks like a character that does really appeal to me and I'm interested to play him.

I pointed out in Arlo's video that the younger gamers were in their teens / prime years when KH1 came out. They had a wonderful experience delivered to them at the right time. Just as OoT had an impact for me.

We've seen MissClick cry a lot but it's awesome to see someone still passionate for games and an adult too. I'm 28 and I lost some passion for things like games n wrestling n sports but I keep hope alive. Even when some my friends stopped playing games.

That was a VERY smart decision to save your bottled up excitement for the final character! I noticed that you were crying, but you were crying tears of joy and that made me very happy! Sora is finally in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate after all this time in OVER A DECADE and I know that the Internet is STILL celebrating this HUGE inclusion of a Disney character being in Ultimate. I'm happy that now KH fans from across the world including yourself will be able to take control of Sora in Smash Bros. Ultimate. You guys deserve to rejoice, knowing that Sora is in the most greatest, most legendary game of all time.
PS: I was the exact same way with Sephiroth when he was revealed last year in December 2020, so I can totally relate to your happiness and joy. I screamed like Dad from Fairly Oddparents when Sephiroth was announced, even if I had no idea who he was.
Smash Ultimate was revealed during the end of my eighth grade year. I'm now in the first semester of my senior year. It's been an incredible journey to see both myself and this game come so far. It's easy to say that Smash Ultimate was the defining game of my high school years.
I was always hesitant on Sora coming in smash. I rooted for Geno more than anyone else, and those two characters have a massive rivalry between each other for a character slot in the game. Also, if Sora were to get in the game, then a lot of 4th party characters would be requested and that would make speculation a nightmare.
However, this trailer and this presentation changed my mind on a lot of my preconceived notions. I'm very happy Sora can close out this game's DLC. Sora looks really fun and awesome to play with. His trailer was honestly one of the best in the franchise. I'm still a little cautious, especially considering the fact that he looks kinda OP and he still can bring in 4th party characters with him, but I'm liking where we're at now.
Smash Ultimate is the best Switch game, and Sora was an excellent way to conclude it's three year development.

When I watched the presentation, I was just happy and amazed that Sakurai and Sora actually managed to do it. I’m glad I watched this because I cried as well, and it was needed.
