    LGR will continue, I'm doing okay! If you're looking to send support though, others in Western NC need way more help than me so please consider donations to local organizations helping out: www.bpr.org/bpr-news/2024-09-28/list-ways-to-donate-and-help-flood-victims-in-western-north-carolina-after-hurricane-helene

      This edition of LGR Cribs is an unfortunate episode. I hope the restoration is quick, painless, and thouroughly covered by insurance. Most adjusters dont seem to understand that the loss was equivalent to a museum of antiques.

I am glad to hear the community is coming together to help each other. You may feel a little funny about this channel and community with all the death and destruction surrounding you right now, but let me assure you your videos mean a lot to me and a lot of others around. +1 to this. I'm also from RS and personally helped to restore a computer that was fully underwater for more than 20 days (and it was a really dirty water, with dead animals and etc.). Sad for the original boxes/manuals/etc., but surely there is hope for the electronics themselves.

    • @Easelgames
      @Easelgames หลายเดือนก่อน

      Most people don't realize that water isn't inheriently the issue with electronics, it's only damaging usually if power goes through it. If their is no power when stuff is FULLY dried then a lot can survive!

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz หลายเดือนก่อน +75

      It's also important to open up and let dry optical media such that they're well separated. Otherwise the bootlet or packaging can fuse to the paint and then pull it off clean. Water can also diffuse into the mirror behind the lacquer on the data side and accelerate its degradation and delamination.
      Battery operated equipment is an issue. Hard disks are an issue. Optical and floppy drives can be rebuilt. Otherwise, electronics survives water ingress if it didn't have to sit moist very long.

      This is not specific to collections, but I've found that plastic boxes (like the ones seen at 10:30) do wonders for storing stuff. They protect from dust, water, bugs, overall physical damage from having weight on top and such, and if they're opaque, against UV light as well. And they're easy to stack, move around and organize. Of course, they also hide everything, so you won't be displaying what's inside, but if it's stuff you're not displaying, they're great. For particularly delicate stuff like important documents, Ziploc-style bags inside the plastic box.

    Back in the late '80s / early '90s, my step-mom owned a Radio Shack franchise. It was very near a river, which had a "100-year flood" event. The stuff that wasn't literally washed away was -- quite surprisingly -- repairable by simply taking it all apart and washing each of the circuit boards and whatever plastic case it was in. I'd bet we managed to save 90% of the mud-covered devices we had? The one thing we could never seem to save was the VCRs -- those rotating head assemblies were completely ruined by the mud and silt. But stuff like the computers and electronic games? No problems at all. Obviously they could never be sold as new, but still -- it was quite interesting to see how much of the stuff we were able to save.
    I'd bet your arcade games will be similar -- just take them apart, clean them well, and dry them thoroughly before applying power to them again. Hopefully they'll all be good!

      Surprisingly enough electronics are saveable often times even if they get absoloutely soaked.
      I think issues usually occur when they are plugged in and get wet, then the water can really do damage you cannot fix simply by cleaning especially on newer more complicated stuff where if anything on a pcb breaks you just gotta toss the whole thing.

    • @Zack_Wester
      @Zack_Wester หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@marcel-q1m the biggest threat to electronic is stuff getting bent, the batteri/resisotr leaking.
      and power.
      you can in theory take a PC computer remove the CMOS dip it in a lake take it out clean everything out and dry it correctly and it will work.

    I'm glad to hear most of your collection is safe, but the destruction to your house is significant and hopefully this helps a little. I've been a fan for many years and it sucks how life is so unfair sometimes. If you don't end up needing the money, please pass it on to someone who does, but I'm suspecting you'll need it. Good luck with the repairs and your community will be here for you, even if it takes a while to resume your videos. All the best mate, from down under.

    I'm guessing some other people have already said so, but I'm sure there's a chance that anything *electronic* that got overly rained on might still be salvageable if you can get 'em totally dry inside and out! All the same, man, it hurts me to see not only the damage to your house, but even just what the exposure to the elements did to just part of your collection. I audibly gasped more than once. SO glad that you're safe, and I would guess others will gladly join me in saying that we genuinely appreciate you sharing these updates with us. ❤️ Love from Canada!

    After my grandmother passed, my mother would buy me computer games to play on her old laptop. Your channel is the only one I know of that talks about many of those retro games that got me through some hard times. You not only discuss those games, but have a lot of the same affection for them that I do. Too many TH-camrs like to crap on old stuff.
    When times were hard I’d turn on your playlist of old retro games and smile at the memories of my mom and I spending time together watching old shows on TV while I played games on her laptop.
    Good luck to you and thanks for the update.

    As strange as it is to say, I admire your positivity throughout all of this. You had everything uprooted and look at it with hope and seem to be moving on with grace, it sets a good example and is something I haven’t seen in a very long time! Looking at this with a glass half full mindset and making videos restoring some of the damaged hardware, unboxing some water damaged NOS with a positive attitude I think might have a bigger impact than just preserving hardware or just as an interesting video to watch while eating your lunch

    To quote Will Wright from his talks about the 1991 Oakland Firestorm and how that tragedy would eventually inspire The Sims:
    "I was surprised how I didn’t miss stuff. The fact we got out and none of our family was hurt seemed so much more important."
    I'm happy to hear you're safe, Clint. LGR is so much more than the individual oddities.

    Seriously Clint, I've been following you for years and I wish you knew how much your videos have meant. So many sleepless nights with panic attacks made bearable through watching LGR Thrifts, some Sims reviews, Oddware or retrospectives.
    I fully understand and agree with helping those who are suffering the worst right now, but I hope you too can both get, receive and feel comfortable accepting help more long term if you ever feel you need it. Because you deserve that too.
    I'm glad that you and a lot of your collection made it out as well as you did through that rough ride, and my heart and thoughts are with all those affected. Have donated what little I can rn, but again, if there's anything we can do to help out later down the road, in general or to replace things lost in your collection, please let us know.
    But focus on the main things right now, health and well-being of you and the people close to you - both in the family sense and geographical sense.
    Much love from across the planet. ❤️ /Chris

    What I see here is humbling and obviously not something to be happy about, but here's what I also see: you have the right mindset for all of this. You are okay, your family is okay, and you will get past all of this. And what I see is a ton of content possibilities - repair-a-thon videos, maybe collabs with others on repairs, and for the stuff that can't be salvaged, you'll be making room for new retro stuff that can be! I'm excited to see what comes but most of all I'm just glad you're okay both physically and mentally. That's the hardest part of all of this. While not anywhere on this scale, I went through a flooded house scenario myself and the recovery is long and tedious. But life moves on as long as you keep in the right mindset!

    4:08 This is my nightmare, I own 2 machines as well and they took a while to get, if something like this happened to my machines, I would be screwed, one machine has artwork that you can't get anymore, I hope your machines still work, especially that missile command from Joe's Classic Video Games (Which I watch all the time), missile command obviously is an 80s game so to see this happen is pretty sad for many arcade fans I'm sure, hopefully you get your stuff a new home and I wish the best in your recovery.
