Ó mar salgado, quanto do teu sal
    São lágrimas de Portugal!
Por te cruzarmos, quantas mães choraram,
    Quantos filhos em vão rezaram!
    Quantas noivas ficaram por casar
Para que fosses nosso, ó mar!
Valeu a pena? Tudo vale a pena
Se a alma não é pequena.
Quem quere passar além do Bojador
Tem que passar além da dor.
Deus ao mar o perigo e o abismo deu,
Mas nele é que espelhou o céu.

I came over to New Jersey from Portugal in 1966. I applaud you and your family for researching your roots! Im sure you've seen the other messages to look into church records if you can locate a local parish, its probably the best archives! But remember, your roots are multi branching, your history is in Portugal, Brazil, and the US. All equally important! The more information you gather, the richer you become!

Really enjoyed your journey, beautiful video, thank you so much for sharing. I too am searching for my antepassados in Portugal. Some of them went to Brazil. Many went to Goa long before the rest went travelling the world. Have just come back from a road trip around NW Portugal. Found 3 Figueiredo churches and a few places called Figueiredo but still have no idea from where my family truly had roots. But Portugal is so beautiful. It was a fabulous trip.

Like many other comenters said, you seem to be Portuguese and Brazilian at the same time. As a portuguese person, for some reason this video left me emotional and proud of my origins. I'm currently imigirated in another country and this video reminded me of a lot of things I love about my country, and like you said, just like your great grandmother hoped to return one day, I sure hope to as well.

I found my great-grandfather's emigration record to Brazil through My Heritage, including the ship. I also found birth records from a few of my ancestors (lots of Annas de Jesus and Marias de Jesus too). Usually the districtal archives have their collections online and you can research a lot from home, that's where I found most of the info and for free. Good luck on your journey

    • @ClaireTrips
      @ClaireTrips  หลายเดือนก่อน +5

There are SO many Ana de Jesuses, we actually found one in the boat records who went from the same port in Portugal to the same port in Brazil and settled in the SAME NEIGHBORHOOD as my great grandmother. My mom prematurely got excited she had found the records but it ended up not being her.

@@ClaireTrips I feel you, there are so many and I have been through the same! You mentioned being curious about why your relative left Portugal - there is a historical collection by Maria Lamas written in 1948 called As Mulheres do Meu País (The Women of My Country) and she describes the brutal conditions in which they lived. If you're interested you can buy it online in the portuguese newspaper Público 🙂

for a future note: in small towns in Portugal the central roads were made to horses or cows carts, cars not exist in that time, so enter with a car in small towns could be very tricky if you are not aware of that.

Hi there! I'm Portuguese, I'm from Aveiro, but my family is originally from Viseu as yours was. I started searching and building my family tree some time ago. Found a lot of my ancestors on the online digitalized documents, but unfortunately had to stop my search at my great-grandfather because I discovered he emigrated to Brazil. In his passport it says he was going to Minas Gerais. The sad part is that I couldn't find the boat's name, but your video gave me hope, and I think I'm gonna keep searching. I am very curious to discover if I have family on the other side of the Atlantic. I also found that one of my dad's uncles went to Brazil after my great-grandfather. The eldest members of my family say that we never heard of them after they went away, but I hope that one day I will find what happened and be able to track them. When I searched for my family, I was very surprised with the number of people that emigrated to Brazil. I mean, I was aware of this migration period, but I would never guess it were so many people from this area in Viseu and Aveiro. I think almost everyone here has an ancestor that went to Brazil. Really nice video! I felt every victory in your search because I know the hard work and the difficulties it envolves.
Here's another interesting fact. Some of those who were able to make a fortune in Brazil and come back to Portugal, used to build enormous houses, with a peculiar and classical architecture and an exuberance that stood out of everything around. I live in a city called Águeda which is known for having a lot of these. Some are in ruins, but a good part of them are still amazing and renovated. They are known as "Casas de Brasileiro de Torna-Viagem" which means houses of the brazilean that came back.

The only thing I might say is, if you're ever back in Porto, give the Parque da Cidade a second try, it seems you went to the least interesting part of it. What you did was truely epic. A nice good adventure to have with your family. What a gift to the heart.
3:25 "bolinhos de bacalhau" = "codfish cakes"
7:36 "mixuruca" Brasilian word. I would say it originates from Tupi language (native language from Brazil); and "pavilhão": I have no idea why your mom thought it would be as big as a stadium (estádio). In 1998, Portugal organized the Expo98. Each country that participated built a building for an exposition on their country. Those buildings were called "pavillions" and the name stayed since then for buildings with permanent thematic expositions. The most common used for the name though, is for indoor sports and gymnastics "pavilhão desportivo".
19:00 "Palácio da Bolsa" not a church. Think of it like a Guild of merchants headquarters. It translates like "palace of stockmarkets".
26:10 omg, I hate those narrow roads in small mountain villages. I can totally undesrtand your problem there :D
30:32 "fonte das lágrimas" Oh, wow, I just live around the corner. So close to the fountain actually. You have to go inside the "quinta das lágrimas". too bad it was closing.
32:20 I actually work close by. nice!

14:14 - The "other side" is not the other side of Porto, it's a different city called Vila Nova de Gaia. 😉
34:07 - What's famous in Belém is not the Pastel de Nata, it's the Pastel de Belém. As you noticed from the texture of the dough and the taste, they're two different things. You can compare the Pastéis de Nata amongst each other but you can't compare a Pastel de Belém with anything because they're unique.

VICTOR HUGO - The death penalty has therefore been abolished in this noble Portugal, a small people with a great history!
Abolishing legal death, leaving all its rights and all its mystery to divine death, is an august progress among all. I congratulate your Parliament, your thinkers, your writers and your philosophers! I congratulate your Nation. Portugal sets an example for Europe. (…) Europe will imitate Portugal, Death to death! War to war! Hate to hate! Live life! Freedom is an immense city of which we are all fellow citizens.I shake your hand as my fellow countryman in humanity…
Victor Hugo, in a letter to newspaper DN, dated July 2, 1867
    Letter from writer Victor Hugo.
Your noble letter made my heart beat. I knew the big news; It is pleasant for me to receive a friendly echo from you. No, there are no small peoples. But yes, little men, alas! And sometimes they are those who lead the great people. People who have despots resemble muzzled lions. I love and glorify your beautiful and dear Portugal. It's free, therefore it's big. Portugal has just abolished the death penalty. Accompanying this progress is taking a major civilizing step. Since today, Portugal is ahead of Europe. You, Portuguese, never stopped being intrepid navigators. Once you were ahead in the Oceans; Today you are truly ahead. Proclaiming principles is even more beautiful than discovering worlds. I shout: Glory to Portugal, and to you: Happiness! I shake your hand cordially.
    Victor Hugo
    Hauteville-House. July 15, 1867

    • @joaomatos7311
      @joaomatos7311 หลายเดือนก่อน

Depending on inflection and context, puto can be innocently referring to a young boy, or a derogatory term. Best to avoid it in unfamiliar circles as to not be misunderstood. Changing the last letter to an "a" to make it feminine, on the other hand, is absolutely derogatory and cannot be misunderstood. You're calling a female a hooker!

Então é óbvio que houve muita mistura no caminho, o que é algo positivo na verdade.
