    Just a thought for those of us who don't like all of those joint lines where the pieces John together! Fill in the joint lines with paintable wood filler and then paint the piece. It looks pretty darn nice w/o all the cut lines!

    The table looks great. The previous finish wasn’t removed however, so your actually applying a stain over top an old finish. The point to staining wood is to see some wood grain. This side table looks to have a veneer top so removing the finish to raw wood takes a delicate touch if using a orbital. You’d be better off painting the top black and putting a finish coat on.

    Binge watching your videos, I’ve narrowed down to 2 projects to start with. #1 wood set of TV trays, their ugly as sin but are very sturdy surviving 5 kids, 4 exchange students and now grandchildren. Almost donated them last month but knew DH (dear husband) would have cried, seriously 😐 going to use this tutorial!
    #2 a cheap sewing cabinet.
    Thanks for all your great beautiful art and clear instructions!

    Christina Muscari This is an excellent DIY video in which anyone can easily follow and make their own masterpiece. I'm with you...it feels wonderful taking a discarded, old, no longer loved, anything, but especially furniture, and make it new again! Often times, it comes out better than when brand new. The satisfaction is simply the best feeling. I'm going to watch ALL your posts! Thank you!!!!

    I have the exact end table, married into it, lol! Instead of replacing, I chose to refinish. It was near completion before watching this, I did near the exact paint, sealer and drawer pull, top white currently, so encouraging! I was unsure, my hubby is old fashioned, he'll have to learn to love the piece. Great video, very happy to find!

    Helpful! Thank you. I started to put Java Gel on a top and it looked horrible so I stopped. Now I see that I just had to keep going with more layers. I love the High Performance. I used Annie Sloan Old Ochre to paint a Rattan dining set. The soft wax just absorbed into the bamboo and didn't look good at all. I called the Stockist and she said just to put the High Performance over the wax. Now it looks great!

    My inner perfectionist is out of control, I do have a big problem with this. I chuckled when you mentioned the hairs, I was painting yesterday and found a couple of hairs and yes, I did try to remove them and created a problem for myself. I am going to try to ignore them. Now with all that said, your table came out so beautiful. Your advice for adding some water spoke to me because I am having problems with the chalk paint being so thick. I am now for the first time trying chalk paint so all your hints are so helpful, Thank You so very much.

      Hello Christina, very well explained video tutorial! have a question for you, I can see that you are using oil based stain and then applying water based polyurethane, ¿is this combination gonna work? I understand that oil and water products are not compatible, have you seen bubbles or something weird? Greetings from Mexico!!

    • @ChristinaMuscari
      @ChristinaMuscari  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow, Mexico! Thanks for watching. You can use a water based top coat on a oil based stain as long as it is completely dry. I waited 72 hours before I applied it according to the manufacturer's specs. They also have great waterbased stains that do the same thing if you don't want to wait that long to coat it.

    I always watch these kinds of videos to see what for colors and paint there are outside the Netherlands.
    I restyle & restore furniture for almost 30 years.
    furniture paints are only available in limited colors and types in the Netherlands, and they are usually not of the best quality.
    that's why I buy my paint abroad as much as possible.

      Oh, please don't paint good furniture. The painted look will go out of style. In fact, many people have never been on board with this look. I have a 130 plus year-old cherry wood bed frame. I brought it to an antique reseller in town and she wanted to paint it and distress it to make it "saleable." I wouldn't let her have it. Why anyone would ruin the original finish of an antique in fantastic condition is beyond my comprehension.
      Painted furniture is for the one or two pieces in a house that are not up to par with the rest of the decor. Or it is for someone starting out without any good pieces.

    • @cariemccart9241

      Not everyone is into the “painted wood” look. I agree wood can be so beautiful that it would be a shame to paint, however... if you like the farm house/ shabby chic look, painted wood furniture is almost necessarily to achieve that look.

    I have a wing folding table - Since my Mom died I have ended up with this table - I mentioned it at first ! - together with 6 chairs - 1 set of 4 & 1 set of 2 - Initally I was just going to restore the four chairs and let the table & 2 chairs go ! - BUT ! - that table has been with us as long as I can remember ?(I'm 57) And I just cannot see it go after its served us so well -All those Sunday Dinners • Christmas Dinners • Birthdays parties ~ Mum would use her sewing machine on it • And the amount of times my Sister & I have come home from School to racks & racks of Moms home made bread or buns & cakes cooling down ready for icing or decorating ! - So I have a check suit length that Mom never got around to using - which I'm going to cover the chair seats with and paint my chairs & table accordingly - I really do love the colours you painted this side table - you have really inspired me to breath new life into our old friend ! Thanks ! -SB - British Isles

    I've learned about and tried a product called Krud Kutter that is a non-toxic biodegradable cleaner with no fumes. I definitely believe in using earth friendly products. Also oil based stained is super toxic. I watched a vid where they used a wood colored chaulk paint diluted with water to use as a stain and it was amazing. Again, toxic free is always a better option especially indoors.

    I have used that paint for a couple of things, but I think it gets scratches very easy. I used the vax on top and I did sand lightly between coats. Now I use "real" chalk paint, the one you paint houses with, and just tint it with powdered pigments. A suggestion, use a paint roller for large surfaces. Gives a much nicer finish.

    I thought it was great that you suggested practice pieces for the beginner because that's exactly what I did. I bought some cheap stuff at an auction before I dive into painting my bedroom set. One piece was a side table that is very close to the one you just did. I am going to be using chalk paint because I need to learn how to paint with it and I wanted to try different techniques. I have a small coffee table also and I want to try to add some flowers or something to the top. I guess there are many ways to do that. Decals, papers, stencils, so I will be looking at videos for each type and try picking one. Your video was very informative so I subscribed and plan on watching many more. Thanks for the help.

    Christina, Awesome job. I am in my Den right now and I am looking at this piece of furniture that I am going to redo over. Hubby likes basic wood furniture, but that is going to change asap (it is a old piece anyways). I also like how you explain yourself, I watched one video of someone else in your age group and I had to literally change it, I don't think that person had to use the F word a lot to get her point across, Call me old fashion.
    Keep up the good work. Thanks for sharing

    Yes ✔️ definitely use general finishes top coat as a POS to using Waxes. I hate wax on my furniture! (Especially if you change your mind) Because you can't just repaint, you have to Remove the WAX

    Thank you for such good information! I have never done any painting on a furniture before, except sponge painting my daughter’s bedroom years ago and I should say I was proud of myself after it was done! I recently bought a very old vanity set and wanted to paint it with annie sloan chalk paint. I just have to make a decision on what shade of white I will use😀 thank you again!!!

You not only show what you are doing but listing the products is refreshing and appreciated. I have been wanting to do something like this with my bedroom furniture but I was not sure how. Thank you for sharing. BTW, If you are bored you can come on over and help. This way I'm sure it will turn out perfectly! LOL😂

    why gell stain instead of painting it black and top coat clear? what does the stain do that the painting doesn't if you're still not seeing the grain?

    • @ChristinaMuscari
      @ChristinaMuscari  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the pics you can't see the grain, but in person you can. It's slightly opaque. You could certainly paint it black if you prefer.

    Christina, great instructional video! I've watched several techniques on other videos and am now thoroughly confused. I have a baker's rack that I want to change up to match my kitchen table. It is a darker wood, not sure what kind of wood but is it best to sand then paint or simply paint over dark wood?
