Drop dead blues - Tourist actually stops to listen and asks why I'm on the street

  • This never happens. People walk by and then....actually stop to listen. I was overwhelmed with emotion! I walked towards them to show that I saw them. We talked for five minutes afterwards. Now I can say that I'm finally fulfilled. 4/25/19

    1) Street playing is not all fun and games and dancing kids. Doing this for 7 years. I regularly face not only verbal abuse, but physical assault as I work a few blocks from downtown eastside Vancouver. I'm surrounded by addicts, drunks, and people who should be in mental homes.
    2) I'm a musician that writes his own music for 20 years. Check out my bandcamp page to see what I can really do with a guitar. 500 albums of original instrumentals.
    3) I get asked this 100 times a day so here's the answer: I play on the street and not in a band because all the clubs closed years ago. I used to lead many bands from 2006 to 2018. That's all gone. It's also a lot more hassle, and less money, to run a band than play by myself.
    4) I get asked this 100 times a day. "Why don't you try a better spot?" THIS is the best spot. How do I know? I've tried all of them. This spot is even better than Granville Island which is all tourists. Vancouver does not have many spots to play. Maybe 3 downtown. I have to go where traffic is heaviest or you make no money. Playing on beaches and parks or near homes, condos, apt buildings, is forbidden. This is the main transit hub of trains/seabus and also walkway for the convention centre as well as heavily touristed gastown.

Everyone present rises and falls together. We all feel it because we've all had it. If only we let our selves go and allow the blues-smith to take us there together. We all sense and feel the emotion together.... and then he/she brings us back home safely when its time.
Love how blues chords resolve. We anticipate the chord change, but we are still taken by the beauty and smooth swell like a lazy wave passing under a boat. Just so very well performed, very nice tempo. Not rushed. Juuuuust right....

My wife is a bit younger than me. She had never even heard of the Blues, so I shared some of my favorite songs with her. She was blown away. She said that she wished she had known about it when she was younger... but she still listens to the current stuff more than anything else. Go figure. (Side comment - in the right environment, and the right people, a good blues guitarist can "move" everyone in the crowd. It touches our souls.)

Only just found you on tube. You are a master guitar player. Such talent. You know most people don't know good music if it hit them in the face. I'm 70 and between 1966 and the late 90's I've been to hundreds of shows in bars here in Montreal. The jazz festival of course also. Today because of my illness I rely on my music library and now you tube. I can't believe that you aren't playing in a band and showing people your mastery.

One of your strongest pieces, Robin, and I don't say that lightly as you pretty much rock everything that you play. But your take on this one is so awesome: the tone, phrasing, feel. Somewhere, Mr. B.B. King has a huge smile on his face. Keep the tasty stuff coming!
