The day MARADONA, PLATINI, LINEKER were teammates at Wembley - FOOTBALL LEAGUE vs REST OF THE WORLD

- Highlights of the day when Diego Maradona, Michel Platini, and Gary Lineker represented a World XI team at Wembley stadium that faced off against a combined Football League XI, in celebration of the 1987 centenary of the Football League.
This match which would be played just one year after his Hand of God against England, and a mere few months after winning the Scudetto with Napoli, was also Maradona's first encounter with Peter Shilton since that memorable World Cup quarter-final. - กีฬา
There will never be another Maradona. We used to get breathless every time he got the ball. Rest in Peace the Greatest of All Times. Thank you for all the joy and happiness you gave to us. You were the one and only.
100% agree. This guy impacted our lives and the sport itself in a way that Messi and CR7 combined can never achieve. I genuinely believe that only Ali transcended sports to greater degree than Diego.

platini outshined here
@@madra000 McGrath outshone everyone in this game-even the little Argie cheat! Pelé is the best player of all time. Bar NONE.

Maradona soccer legend
Is football, not soccer.
Maradona and Platini playing on the same side! Footie heaven
Maradona is such a fun player to watch his dribbling, playing style and low centre of gravity is pure class
Platini was MOM for me.
Unbelievable.
I was also thinking the same, Platini dominated the field.
Pele always dominated the field when he played with his great team mates, Maradona couldn't dominated the field in this match, here Platini clearly dominated the match.
It was Bryan Robson.
Don’t know what game you guys watched
WHen football was played by actual footballers
I was at this match & Platini & Robson were the best players on the park, honourable mentions to Magrath & Lineker
Maradona too good for everyone GOAT
I remember watching this with my dad whilst on holiday in a caravan in Polperro, Cornwall (SW England) Good times!
Paulo Futre the only player who could play like the argentinian God. Absolutely delightful to see them play together. Him, Maradona, Lineker, Platini… Just LEGENDS
Futre was a great great player but there was no one like maradona on the pitch
Futre didn't get the number 10 shirt!!!?? Yet he still went out and played 😮
Paul McGrath great defender ,Lineker looked so sharp ,great touches from Diego lovely passes from Platini ,robson ,Brady josima great names
Paulo Futre
Well, there was a lot of legends. Liam Brady, Chris Waddle, Paul McGrath, Bryan Robson, Lineker, Paulo Futre, Igor Belanov, Rinat Dasayev, Osvaldo Ardiles... This kind of all-star friendly matches were great.
And The MVP of the game: MICHEL PLATINI.
Platini GIANT!!!
great piece of skill and awareness of space from platini at 11,24
Nothing against Maradona. Not his fault that the referee and Linesman were both blind. And irrespective of THAT goal, his other in that game was the greatest world cup goal of all time. As a football fan, Maradona is just one of those players who you could watch forever and a day. A complete artist. Same with Platini. Both incredible players. Playing the game with a smile on their face and for the joy and love of the game. Wish today's generation of players played more for the fun of it than all the $$$$.
As an English fan, it annoys me to see Maradona getting booed.
Maradona and Platini on midfield tho 🥶🥶
Then you probably ought to be more annoyed with Maradona's actions that were giving them good cause to boo him! I was 8 years old when I watched this match. I completely understood the passion behind the sentiment even then. Although I was completely in-awe of him whilst watching this game. To this day I feel love/hate sentiments towards Diego Maradona. I just turned 44 a few days ago and the man fascinates me even now. But his taunts in the media and then his outrageous act of handball still grate with me in equal measure. Juxtaposition!
The exhibition match featured here was played in August 1987. A showpiece for the centenary of the Football League that Maradona was paid handsomely for. That's less than 14 months after El Diego, twisted genius that he was, pretty much "single-handedly" (pun intended) cost us a place in the semi-final of the Mexico World Cup '86 with his act of treachery. Yet we still applauded the incredible 2nd goal he managed to score whilst running from the halfway line and dancing around half the England football team in the process. But still we despise him for the punched 1st goal, Malvinist taunts and "Hand of God" bollocks he came out with during the aftermath. To put it in even broader context, this was also less than 6 years after the fascist military junta in Buenos Aires gave their naval forces the order to attack the Falklands Islands. Diego Maradona and the rest of the Argentinian team members and football authorities (both past and present) have continued for the past four decades to make deplorable Malvinist statements and attempted Malvinist publicity stunts which only adds fuel to the fire.
Kicking, hitting, play-acting, diving. All examples of cheating. Which the Argentinan players would never dream of doing. Those horrid English men eh.
@L10L
Nice one, fella.
You found your balls at last.
Less of the hand-wringing, appeasing, pseudo-Englishman about that second comment.
Although it's taken you a while.
Delayed reaction per chance...?

I was there at Wembley for this match.
Maradona the naughty kid in the class but is cleverer than everyone and speaks up for the students.
Pele- Teacher’s Pet. Gets all the praise by teachers because he does what he is told.
Good thing Pele was teachers pet. Can you imagine what the football world would be like if Pele had Maradonas personality in the 1960s? Forget it! He wouldn’t have made it in their 1958 World Cup squad at 17 yrs old. Doubtful if there would be a Pele on the international stage if he had a cocky extrovert attitude like Maradona. The legendary Garrincha got away with his bad boy antics until it ruined him. But even he didn’t have Maradonas arrogant swagger that challenged authority. Brazil is a multi-racial society but they also have racial discrimination issues. It exists today in Brazil in all its subtle forms and back in the day it was even worse for all black people regardless of who they were and what talent they had.
What ridiculous analogy
You must suck Maradona s egg

I was spoiled as a kid with football...i wish i appreciated it more at the time
Watching this you realise just how much the game’s moved on. Maradona and an already retired Platini way ahead of their time
Great game and some fantastic skills and passing. Maradona and Platini played amazing and Paul McGrath had a great game defensively too. Thanks for uploading, well worth watching. :)

Lineker bottled like 15 chances here now waffling about finishing on Twitter
Unmatched Skills of MARADONA displayed even in this match. The Rest OF the World would have won this match by 3 goals at least. What a brilliant passing by Diego. As for England fans - " Get Over It ". Did you guys not cheat in the 1966 World Cup Final against West Germany???
No. The 1966 goal did not involve any cheating by Hurst. But the English cheated twice, both against Argentina, in the World Cup of 1998 and in that of 2002, when Owen dived and got penalties.
Is there a set time limit in which people should get over something? Set by whom and what length of time? In one situation a player shoots at the goal and thinks the ball had crossed the line, the referee decided it was a goal - no attempt by the player of foul play, just an honest attempt to score a goal. In the other, the player deliberately attmepts to score by means in which he clearly knows is illegal and thus cheating. Just clarification to the nonsense above.

In England, football fans have never warmed to Maradona after the Hand of God scandal. Nobody blames the referee or linesman who didn't see the foul. He is (for me and many) the best footballer to ever grace the game.
Is there a set time limit in which people should get over something? Set by whom and what length of time? You speak as if you know, but you are not so accurate.

ESTO ES FÚTBOL, Y ASI SON ESTAS COSAS ... 🤷🤷👍👍🇦🇷🇬🇧
Excellent
Lineker missed so many
I actually think that despite being world cup top scorer a year previously that Lineker got a bit nervous playing with Diego and Platini.
@@e-mot10nshd43 That's possible, but I think it's more likely that being an exhibition match he simply wasn't in a very competitive frame of mind, and wasn't fully concentrated in the way he would be in a proper match. EDIT: Having just watched the first half of the video, the chances he missed weren't easy- certainly the first one was very difficult, racing wide and having to hit it at a sharp angle while running hard slightly away from goal, and a defender covering the goal line. He nevertheless hit the bar. Some chances he had were certainly better, but as I said this was not a serious match so his frame of mind wouldn't be the same in front of goal (his movement, work rate etc. certainly looked good), and also all the opposing keeper and defenders knew him better than any others could. An entertaining match though, and it's great to see great players who wouldn't normally play together. Great too to see Robson tackling Maradona- to loud cheers!- and later scoring. Waddle showing how good he was with those stepovers sending the defender the wrong way, Webb almost lobbing the keeper from close range. Brilliant passing from Maradona and Platini, though it's interesting that Maradona and Lineker didn't work so well together. A young Paulo Futre on show, and Paul McGrath performing impressively at the back.
@@danyoutube7491 McGrath was best player on field. It's quite amazing to be reminded just how naturally gifted a player he was.
Lineker did talk about going back to Barcelona the following day (presumably for preseason) and practicing Maradona's magical trick on the Barca training ground (the 13 perfectly vertical kicks inside of three paces that nobody could do more than 3 of).
The England vs Rest Of The World match was played on 8th August 1987.
I just read that La Liga started on 29th August 1987. Three weeks later. So perhaps Lineker lacked match sharpness as regards his overall finishing?
Bryan Robson topclass Best English midfielder ever fantastic footballer.
Yep the GOAT
Glenn Hoddle? Bobby Charlton?
very good football.......
Lineker the Lord of lussing chances
Лучшие игроки восьмидесятых годов!!!
Those boos to Diego are from 1986 World Cup
Yes they were indeed but it did not bother him one bit. Diego was far too talented to be affected by crowds booing him. Anyways he had the last laugh as he walked away with £100,000 for playing this match - that was the fee he charged the English League! £100,000 in 1987 for one match!!! That's Diego being 20-25 years ahead of his time as it's only recent phenomenon for players to earn that much per match.
@@e-mot10nshd43 I never liked Maradona. Or Pele. I'm not sure exactly why, but I think it's the pompous adulation around them and the general pressured expectation that we are supposed to think of them as great without question. Clearly they were both very good players, but I actually take the view that they were overrated. Maradona in particular was shameless for his gamesmanship (though in his defence, it should be added that diving and what not was a common feature of international football around this time, and if anything, it was the West Germans - as they were then known - who were the worst for it, closely followed by the Italians).
Turning to your video, I greatly enjoyed re-watching the moment in this game when Bryan Robson unceremoniously floors the irritating Argentinian dwarf. The stunned reaction of Maradona, as he is put firmly in his place for once, is priceless.
Maradona's reputation was rehabilitated, with lots of fawning tributes on news of his death, so it is forgotten just how unpopular he was in this country due to the Hand of God - it was a spectacularly unsportsmanlike way to win a game, so I doubt he was very surprised at the hostile reception. He knew the score and could hardly blame the fans in England for feeling that way. For me, the Hand of God is the one major thing that tarnishes him in the historic rankings of players. On a point of principle, I can't regard him as quite one of the greatest players given that he won a crucial match by unfair means, and I am slightly suspicious of anybody who can overlook such a thing, regardless of national allegiance. Had an England player done a similar thing, I would take the same view.
Players love being boo’ed. it’s a sign of respect
@@tomrogers7110 Ah, lo olvidaba, creo que hay una copa que la ganaron con un gol que no fue... no? 1966... te suena?
@@tomrogers7110 If Pele and Maradona are overrated, who is it that should be rated higher than them in your opinion? Especially at that time.

Maradona didn't get a good welcome, I mean if any England player in that game had of scored a goal using his hand they wouldn't be running to the ref saying It was handball
It wasn't just the handball. It was the swaggering arrogance of the man, his taunts and the statements he made to the media about his handball, him tying it in with the Falklands, etc. Very similar to what to the way the Argentina team taunted the England players after Diego Simeone's treachery during France 1998.

It's always nice to hear from a semi-literate dickhead.
I see that you have allowed your irrational hatred of English people to cloud your wonky judgement, Jonatan. I can also summarise that basic mathematics is not your strong suit either.
In the 1966 World Cup Final England beat West Germany 4-2. So if as you say the ball did not cross the line for one of the goals then scoreline would have finished at 3-2 and still have resulted in an English victory, would it not?
Now, please feel free to give me six million reasons as to why you feel Steve Hodge has stolen Maradona's match-word Number 10 shirt from his family estate and the Argentinan people. I will in-turn continue to laugh my arse off at the absurdity of your piss-weak argument 😂

@5:04 after this i watched a highlight of futre.. And yes he was as good as Maradona in dribbling in 80s
You couldn't mark Maradona properly, as he was too clever a player, to man mark him. So the only way most defenders could cope with him, was to foul him! Best player there's ever been👍💯⚽🇦🇷⚽🇦🇷⚽🇦🇷⚽
It is shite the fact that the English fans are booing maradona. Arguably the worlds best footballer at the time of this game was played. Instead of appreciating the skills and magic of the man, they are showing the true class of the English fans. That was also evident at Wimbledon, 2019 men’s final Djokovic vs Federer. Instead of appreciating the spectacle of arguably the best players + Rafa to ever grace a tennis court…they decided to try and get Federer over the line…they purposely yelled things out as Djokovic was half way into his serve. There was a hysteria, much like the hysteria by British, Australian and American mainstream media…constantly painting Djokovic as a villain….the only thing could really cas5 h8m as a villain was that he was Serb and was going to overtake all records and will have to be acknowledged as Tennis’ GOAT. THE BRITS AND YANKS ESPECIALLY BLEED FROM THEIR EYE BALLS AT THE POSSIBILITY THAT A ‘Serb’ could become greatest of all time in their gentleman’s sport. The best ever and a Serb, they burn with rage…but typical of the British blood they will chat and smile while hating your guts, best way to describe this is cowards and pussies
Not all English do btw best player seen live … with Maradonna it was the falklands war and the things he said after cheating that really got the English upset,so maybe do research before u write

@@darrenlee9237 pry a little deeper into history and you will see what I am talking about. Who demonised the Serbs throughout the 90’s.
