On the global economic map, ports are often symbols of power and influence. In recent years, China has expanded its port network around the world through its ambitious Belt and Road Initiative, and the port of Chancay in northern Peru is one of the key nodes.
As far as I know, the port was built with an investment of US$1.3 billion by COSCO Group, which owns 60% of the operating rights. It is expected that the Port of Chancay will be completed and put into use in 2024. It will not only be one of the most important ports in South America, but also a strategic hub connecting Asia and South America. However, just as the project was on track, an unexpected policy change could change the entire game.
In March this year, the Peruvian government made a major decision and attempted to cancel COSCO Group’s exclusive right to operate the port. Although the legal proceedings will not affect the construction of Chancai Port, this wrong decision will cause a big blow to China's strategic layout.
Once China loses its port operating rights, it will also lose its strategic commercial and port hub between Asia and South America, and all investments will be in vain.
So why did Peru suddenly cancel China’s operating rights to the port? How will this port affect commercial and strategic relations between Asia and South America in the future?

That’s the nauseating problems of an extremely poor country. Sovereignty is almost always the least of their concerns.

It seems Democracy is less interested in the national development of the country and people and more in the 'democratization' (?) of the political party and sycophancy. It shows that political ideology is more important than national development but sadly the world is divided into political identity.

So now you should know the mentality of most of these Latin American Countries. It is ok to let Peru run the port. But trust me it will be another Sri Lankan. When they come begging for help, the disadvantage will emerge and they will loose more in the end. Though I am not from China, but I am of Chinese origin and very proud of our rich culture and history of China. Only far sighted people will see this and learn from the Chinese. Btw the way I have traveled many time to Brazil and Chile about twenty years ago. I know their culture.

US black hands seem a likely player in this change. If China uses this Peruvian port Chancay, it bypasses some of the trade that goes via the Panama Canal, and reduces shipping costs for Peru to its biggest customer. This port will service trade from Brazil and Bolivia also as a rail link from Brazil via Bolivia to Peru is being planned. Certainly the loss of this port is important, but Peru has much to lose as COSCO figures out how to avoid using the Peruvian port. China is Peru's largest export destination with 32% of its exports to China. The question needed to be answered is how much did Peru invest in this port for 40% control.

Peru wants China to help to build its trade, manufacturing and economy to peace, harmony and prosperity or Peru can choose destruction to its economy. Eventually Peru makes a U turn begging China to reinstate its agreement similarly what Argentina FM Did.

The Peruvian government had better think clearly before taking action. Roads and ports are the most basic infrastructure needs to escape wilderness and poverty. If you take American black money and abandon the port, you are betraying the future of the entire country.

Peru canceled China's operating rights to the port due to concerns over national security and sovereignty. The decision was made after a review by the Peruvian government found that the terms of the agreement with China were not in the country's best interests.
The cancellation of China's operating rights to the port could potentially strain commercial and strategic relations between Asia and South America. It could lead to increased tensions between the two regions as China seeks to expand its influence and presence in South America.
However, it is also possible that new agreements and partnerships could be formed between Peru and other countries, including those in Asia, to develop and improve the port. This could lead to new opportunities for trade and cooperation between the two regions in the future.
Overall, the cancellation of China's operating rights to the port could have both positive and negative implications for commercial and strategic relations between Asia and South America. It will be important for both regions to work together to find mutually beneficial solutions and partnerships moving forward.
